Vectors: 5 Displacement and Force in Two Dimensions
Vectors: 5 Displacement and Force in Two Dimensions
Worksheet-3
SECTION 1 Vectors
In your textbook read about vectors.
Answer the following questions. Use complete sentences and show your calculations.
____________________________________________________________________________________
2. Three small children are pulling a rag doll in different directions, each trying to get the doll
from the other two. The x-component of the force exerted by the first child is 5.0 N, and the
y-component is 3.0 N. The second child’s force is 4.0 N in the x-direction and 2.0 N in the
y-direction. The x- and y- directions of the third force are 1.0 N and 8.0 N. What are the
components of the net force acting on the rag doll? What is the direction and magnitude of the
net force? You may want to draw a free-body diagram to help you solve the problem.
The following steps for adding vectors are in scrambled order. In the space provided, write which step is first,
second, third, and fourth.

Chapter: 5 Displacement and Force in Two Dimensions
KEY
1. In vector addition you are transforming two vectors into one vector. In vector resolution you are
transforming one vector into two vectors.
2. Add each x- and y-component of the vectors to obtain the answer resultant force,
Fx 5.0 N 4.0 N 1.0 N 2.0 N
Fy 3.0 N 2.0 N 8.0 N 3.0 N
R (2.0 N)2 (3.0 N)2 3.6 N
R A
sin sin
A sin (3.0 N) sin 90ο
sin 0.83
R 3.6 N
56ο
2.0 N in the x-direction, 3.0 N in the
y-direction, resultant force is 3.6 N acting at an angle of 56°
