MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL

COLLEGE ASSESSMENT
STUDENT DETAILS

Student ID: 45664455 Group Number:

Name: Sujith Family Name: Bellam

ASSESSMENT DETAILS

Unit Name: Mathematical Modelling 1A Unit Code: WMAT1010

Assessment Task: Problem Set 1 Term and Year: 6, 2021
Total number of pages: 8 Weighting: 5%
Due Date: Friday Week 2, 11.55 pm Total Marks: 25

INSTRUCTIONS
• Write your Student ID number, Name and Surname and Group Number in the spaces pro-
vided at the top of this page.
• Attempt all questions in this paper, and put your answers in the spaces or boxes provided.
• No marks will be awarded for unlabelled or illegible work.
NATURE OF THE TASK
This is an individual task. Students are not permitted to discuss their solutions.
HURDLE ASSESSMENT
This is not a hurdle assessment.
SUGGESTED RESOURCES
To complete this assessment, students are expected to consult with a wide range of resources.
These may include materials provided on ilearn or in the textbook.
HOW TO PRESENT YOUR ASSESSMENT
Solutions should be written neatly in order. All workings required to answer questions must be
included. Marks will primarily be awarded for correct steps of working.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTION
This assessment must be submitted as a single PDF file in the link provided on iLearn.
If you cannot access or view your submission on iLearn, you have not correctly submitted your
work and will need to do so prior to the due date. (If you require assistance submitting through
iLearn, you may lodge a OneHelp Ticket or refer to the IT help page.)
LATE SUBMISSIONS
Late submissions are possible but they will be penalised unless the student has been granted an
approved extension (refer to the Special Consideration Policy). Late penalties will be calculated
based on the marks allocated to the specific assessment task. The penalty for late submission is as
follows:
• 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted if it is late by up to 30 minutes
• 10% of the total possible marks will be deducted if it is more than 30 minutes late and up to
24 hours late.
• A further 10% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each 24-hour period up to 3
days (including weekends).
1
• 100% of the marks will be deducted after 3 days and zero marks will be awarded Please note
that online submissions are electronically tracked, and the electronic record of submission
will be used to determine late penalties. This means that submitting your work even a few
seconds after the allocated deadline will result in a late submission which will attract the
penalty noted above. There is no flexibility with the applying of penalties as they must be
applied fairly and consistently to all students. It is your responsibility to allow sufficient time
for submission of your work and any uploading of documents so try to avoid submitting your
work just prior to the deadline.

RETENTION OF RECORDS
Student are required to keep a copy of all items submitted or completed for the purpose of assess-
ment or evaluation until the end of the grade appeal period.
INFORMATION ABOUT HOW AND WHEN FEEDBACK WILL BE PROVIDED
Feedback will be provided to students in class or will be provided to students individually upon
request. The solution to this assessment will be posted on ilearn.
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Using the work or ideas of another person, whether intentionally or not, and presenting them as
your own without clear acknowledgement of the source is called Plagiarism.
Macquarie University promotes awareness of information ethics through its Academic Integrity
Policy. This means that:
• all academic work claimed as original must be the work of the person making the claim
• all academic collaborations of any kind must be acknowledged
• academic work must not be falsified in any way
• when the ideas of others are used, these ideas must be acknowledged appropriately.

All breaches of the Academic Integrity Policy are serious and penalties apply. Students should be
aware that they may fail an assessment task, a unit or even be excluded from the University for
breaching the Academic Integrity Policy
EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS
Students are responsible for their learning and are expected to:
• actively engage with assessment tasks, including carefully reading the guidance provided,
understanding criteria, spending sufficient time on the task and submitting work on time;
• Read, reflect and act on feedback provided;
• Actively engage in activities designed to develop assessment literacy, including taking the
initiative where appropriate (e.g. seeking clarification or advice, negotiating learning con-
tracts, developing grading criteria and rubrics);
• Provide constructive feedback on assessment processes and tasks through student feedback
mechanisms (e.g. student surveys, suggestions for future offerings, student representation
on committees);
• Ensure that their work is their own; and
• Be familiar with University policy and faculty procedures and act in accordance with those
policy and procedures.
MARKING CRITERIA
See next page.

WMAT1010 Problem Set 1 Term 6, 2021

In order to get marks for the questions in this problem set, you must show all your
working and how you arrived at your answers with mathematical steps.

1. (5 marks) A new house is built on a large empty land. There is a straight road that runs from
30 metres directly east of the house to 40 metres directly north of the house. We want to build
a straight driveway from the house to some point on the road. To minimise cost, we would
like to construct the driveway of shortest possible length. Draw a diagram that represents the
road and the house and calculate what this length should be, using the concept of a vector
projection.
Check your calculations in MATLAB and include this MATLAB code in your submission.

3
2. (6 marks) The structure of a Methane molecule CH4 is the shape of a tetrahedron with the
four hydrogen atoms at the vertices of the tetrahedron and the carbon atom at the centroid
(the point equidistant from the vertices).

(a) Sketch the Methane molecule in R3 if the vertices of the tetrahedron are A(2, 0, 0),
B(0, 2, 0), C(0, 0, 2) and D(2, 2, 2).
(b) Check that in this model of the Methane molecule, the centroid is the point (1, 1, 1).
(c) The bond angle is the angle between the lines that join the carbon atom to two of the
hydrogen atoms. Compute the bond angle to the nearest degree.

Check your calculations in MATLAB and include this MATLAB code in your submission.

4
3. (3 marks) When a charge q moves with velocity v in an electric field E and a magnetic field
B it experiences a force called the Lorentz force F, calculated by the formula

F = qE + qv×B.

Calculate the Lorentz force acting on the charge q = 5 moving with velocity v = 3i + 2j + k in
an electric field E = 2i + 4j + k and a magnetic field B = i + 3j + 5k.
Check your calculations in MATLAB and include this MATLAB code in your submission.

5
4. (3 marks) An ant is standing at the western edge of a moving walkway. The walkway is
moving at 8 cm per second in the direction due South. The ant starts to walk at 6 cm per
second across the walkway in the direction perpendicular to its edge towards East. If the
walkway is 42 cm wide, find the displacement of the ant from its starting point just as it steps
off the walkway.

6
5. (5 marks) A florist sells three types of flowers in three bouquet sizes. A small bouquet has
one rose, three tulips, and three irises. A medium bouquet has two roses, four tulips, and six
irises. A large bouquet has four roses, eight tulips, and six irises. If the florist uses a total of
24 roses, 50 tulips, and 48 irises in their bouquets, how many of each bouquet is made?

7
6. (3 marks) Calculate the determinant of the following matrix by hand and also in MATLAB
(include your code in your submission).
 
