Introduction
Artists abound since there are many genres of art and the number of artists keeps
on increasing as new forms of art emerge.
This lesson deals on how a person will categorize certain art pieces through senso-
ry perception. Moreover, this also discusses about how a person can give its appre-
ciation to an artwork to produce art pieces, give objective criticisms, and find the
story behind the works created.

Art is everywhere; it offers more than brushes and chisels. When one can express his/ her feelings
through whatever medium he/she likes, that is considered an art.
That’s why it is useful to know the different classification of arts because art is not just limited to that.
1. VISUAL ARTS
Visual arts are those forms perceived by the eyes. These include painting, sculpture, and architec-
ture. They are also called SPATIAL ARTS because artworks produced under this genre occupy space.
They are further divided into graphic arts and plastic arts.

2. AUDIO– VISUAL ARTS Musical got 7 Million
Audio-visual arts are art forms perceived by views over in 48
both ears (audio) and eyes (video). They are called hours.
performing arts in as much as the artists render a
performance in front of an audience.
Examples of these are music
(vocal, instrumental, and
mixed), dance (ethnological,
and social, and theatrical)
and drama (tragedy, come-
dy, tragicomedy, farce, melo-
drama, etc). Music, unlike
dance and drama, can be
purely audial as when the
audience listens to a song
played on the radio and does
not see the artist ( the singer)
performing live on stage.

3. LITERARY ARTS
Literary arts are presented in the written mode intended to be read. These include prose (short sto-
ries, novels, essays, and plays) and poetry (narrative poems, lyric poems, and dramatic poems). Prose
forms differ from verse or poetic forms where the former are in paragraph (composed of sentences) form,
while the latter are in stanza (composed of lines) form.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep. The woods look lovely against the setting
But I have promises to keep, darkness and as I gaze into the mysterious
And miles to go before I sleep, depths of the forest, I feel like lingering
And miles to go before I sleep.” here longer. However, I have pending ap-
pointments to keep, and much distance to
cover before; settle in for the night, or else
I will be late for all of them.
They have the same thought but differs on how they are presented. This is
the power of Language. Above is an example of a prose and poetry.
If you think you are not into visual arts or audio– visual arts and you find
your self into writing stories, poems and you engage better in books, you
belong to literary arts. Language is powerful; it is a powerful way to com-
municate our thoughts.
Humanities or the study of the arts was limited to aesthetic or art appreciation and/or art history during
the second half of the 20th century. With the onset of the new millennium and the recent developments
in various disciplines, the study of humanities has extended to art production and art criticism. In short,
humanities deals with the four divisions of art study, namely, art appreciation, art history, art production,
and art criticism.
This is often a subjective way of giving comments to an artwork because you’re just basing
your appreciation on the things that you know and like.
2. Art History
Art history is the division of art study where the student acquires knowledge of the artists, their
backgrounds, their masterpieces, and their significant contributions in various fields of art.
This is now the time that you are becoming curious with the different forms of art around
you. You’re not just merely appreciating but also digging deeper as you start to become
more conversational on how an artist came up with a piece of art.

knowledge and skills in producing his own works of arts.
With the use of his creativity, he now begin to explore how to make a certain art piec-
es with the help of different technological advancement. This is the time that they are
searching and browsing some video tutorials and/or written instructions. They can make
a certain art even if it is instructed virtually or just by words.
4. Art Criticism
Art criticism is the division of art study where the student
learns to use his judgement in evaluating different artworks based on
the set criteria.
Art criticism is a way by which you are giving your judgement based
on a certain standard set before you. It is way more objective be-
cause you have a basis on how you are going to evaluate certain work.
That’s why it is very important that when you are working on a certain pro-
ject, you must also understand the criteria so that you can target the nec-
essary things that need to be included.
