VI. Read the following fable “The Fisherman and His Wife” and put the verbs in brackets into
the past simple or the past continuous.
A fisherman and his wife (live) lived in a little hut by the sea. One day, while the fisherman
(perform) was performing his usual work, he (catch) caught a fish who (say) said he (be) was
actually a magical prince as well as a talking fish.
The fisherman (agree) agreed to let him go.
The wife (not like) didn’t like that, and (tell) told him to go back and ask for a cottage. This
wish (come) came true, but the cottage (not be) wasn’t nice enough so the wife then (send) sent the
fisherman back to wish for a castle, then to wish that they (be) were the rulers of the country, and
then to be emperors.
