Quarter 2 - MODULE 3-4: Creates A Digital Painting Similar With The Masters' (E.g., Van Gogh

Digital painting is the process of creating artwork digitally on a computer using painting software and tools like brushes, layers, and various brush techniques that mimic traditional painting styles. Artists' brushes provide different types of brushes like impasto, splattering, pointillization, and impressionist that allow the artist to paint in the styles of masters like Van Gogh, Pollock, Seurat, and Renoir. Key aspects of digital painting include working in layers, using different brush sizes and shapes, and blending colors to achieve effects similar to hand painting. The document provides instructions for how to create a basic digital painting using tools in MS Paint.

ARTS
QUARTER 2 – MODULE 3-4

 Creates a digital painting similar with the Masters’ (e.g., Van Gogh,
etc.) in terms of style, theme, etc.
PART I

A. INTRODUCTION

Digital painting is the process of painting on a tablet and creating artwork digitally on a computer.
Just like a traditional painting, it is done through computer painting software that uses brushes.
Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as water color,
oils, acrylic paints, etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, graphic tablet and stylus, and
software. Traditional painting is painting with a physical medium as opposed to a more modern style like
digital. Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art, particularly computer-generated art, in which
does not involve the computer rendering from a model. The artist uses painting techniques to create the
digital painting directly on the computer.

B. DISCUSSION

What are artists’ brushes?

Many of the brush techniques and styles of painting that, you have read or heard about is now
possible to do in the Artists’ Brushes menu. With the Artists Brushes, imitating the behavior and appearance
of traditional materials, such as oil or watercolor paint, is very close to real painting.
There are several kinds of brushes that your Brush Selector in the Artists’ Brushes provides. The types of
brush (Flat, Camel Hair, Bristle, Water color Bristle, etc.) and style (Van Gogh, Seurat, Monet,
Impressionist, and Pointillist Brushes, etc.), for example, are some of the more popular choices. The aim of
these brushes is to help you paint in the style of their namesakes. Here are some of the brushes that illustrate
the range of Artists’ Brushes:

 Impasto- This brush technique uses

paint so thick that it achieves a king of
three dimensional quality (best output).
Impasto has been used by many master
artists, such as Van Gogh and
Rembrandt.

 Splattering- This technique is about the

application of paint onto a surface by flicking,
dripping, or whisking the paint from a brush. It is
used to show the presence of small particles like
smoke, blizzard, or sea spray- or expressive and
abstract, adding energy and variety to a flat or
bare area. Spattering recalls the style of “action
painter” Jackson Pollock who among other
technique, used spattering to apply paint on his
canvases.

1
Pointilization- is the digital process of rendering a
figure or shape in dots or small brushstrokes of
color. This technique refers back to late 19th
century Pointillism, a modern art style identified
with the work of George Seurat. The Pointillist
Brush allows you to mix color optically. It
provides you those popular dots of color.

 Hard-Edge- painters gained prominence

because they placed importance on the
crisp, precise edges of the shapes in their
paintings. Their works contain smooth
surfaces, hard edges, pure colors (low
opacity), and simple geometric shapes.
Thin or wide lines can be created to help
define shapes and set off the colors. They
are also done with great precision. A
famous hard- edge painter is Frank Stella
on his Abgatana
III (1968) Figure 4: ABGATANA III 1968

 Impressionist- the Impressionist Brush

imitates the style of painting of late 19th-early
20th century Impressionism. The
Impressionist’s paint was dabbed on the
canvas to create interesting effects of light and
color. Go to the Impressionist Brush in the
Brush Selector to form a new Dab type. The
paint can either be applied in dabbing motion
or brushed. The exact positioning of
the dabbed
brushstrokes is sometimes hit and miss. With
Figure 5: LUNCHEON OF THE BOATING patience, you can make it work for you.

 Palette Knife- The key point in this brush

technique is that the Palette Knife does not
add color, it just smears the colors that are
already present, including any background
color. The Palette Knife variant is selected
in the Brush tool bar. Load a new brush full
of clean paint without mixing each time
you apply paint using the Palette Knife

technique. Figure 5: Palette knife digital painting

What are layers in digital painting?

One of the wonders of using computer software’s is the ability to

work in Layers. Each layer in your software document is a separate
image that you edit apart from any other layer.

How to Make Your Digital Painting

1. Open MS Paint on your Tablet PC. The first few tools at the top are your selection tools. With these tools,
you can select part of your image independently. The square tool will define for you an area- your virtual
canvas- where you can work.

2. Using your digital pen, draw out your outlines. Indicate your foreground, middle ground, and background
shapes. You can also select the character of your line switching from brush, to pen, to pencil, or airbrush in a
second. The pencil lines should touch the edge of your rectangle or virtual canvas. If the line does not touch
the edge, it will allow other colors to bleed into that shape.

3. Then, use the paint bucket tool to dump color into large areas. Use the color pattern and colored textures
in the toolbox for added effect. Add lighter colors for highlights and darker colors for shadowing. The
texture of the “fill-ins” and background can be chosen too. Use the Eraser tool if you must.

4. Create virtual brush strokes. Change the brush to blend in the effects under the paintbrush tool. If needed,
change the size and shape of the paintbrush as well. Observe how the colors are blended and what parts of
the work are being manipulated. The more you blend the colors, the more the work would look as if it were
painted by hand. You may also enlarge the size of the painting.

5. Work in layers. Once you have selected a portion of the image, copy and paste it over on the left side of
the screen. At the bottom, you will find the layers panel. When you copy and paste a selection, it will
automatically create a new layer above the background layer. As you add more layers, the ones that are
higher in the layer order will be on top of your image. You can change this order by simply dragging the
layers up and down.

6. Use the Artists’ Brushes. Switch to Artists’ Brushes should you like to create a digital painting similar
with anyone of the Masters (Impressionist, Seuratt, Van Gogh, etc.) in terms of style or theme. Learn from
these masters to build a sense of the world outside of your own.
7. Print the completed painting. Finally, when you are satisfied with your painting, a paper printout, suitable
for reproduction, can be obtained. Use only small amounts of glue to mat your work, so it would not soak
through the paper. Display your work in an art exhibit. Post it online as well. Appreciate any feedbacks that
you receive from your friends and family. They could provide you with ideas that will enable you to make
better decisions.

Switch to Artist’s Brushes should you like to create a digital painting similar with anyone of the
Masters (Impressionist, Seurat, Van Gogh, Warhol, etc.) in terms of style and theme. For example, research
on the painting techniques of Andy Warhol, you will find out that Warhol is famous for his repeated images,
a familiar scene in today’s world of mass reproduction- soup can after soup can, row after row. Uniform,
accurate, and few variations in the use of shapes and color also characterize Warhol’s style. Learn from
these masters to build a sense of the world outside of your own.
