The COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity to rethink how tourism interacts with societies, other economic
sectors, natural resources, and ecosystems, measure and manage it better, ensure a fair distribution of
its benefits, and advance the transition toward a carbon-neutral and resilient tourism economy.

TOURISM AND COVID-19 – UNPRECEDENTED


ECONOMIC IMPACTS

 Tourism is one of the world’s major


economic sectors. It is the third-largest
export category (after fuel and chemicals)
and in 2019 accounted for 7% of global trade.
 For some countries, it can represent over 20% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and,
overall, it is the third largest export sector of the global economy.
 Tourism is one of the sectors most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, impacting economies,
livelihoods, public services, and opportunities on all continents. As a result, all parts of its vast
value chain have been affected.

MASSIVE IMPACT ON LIVELIHOODS

 Tourism supports one in 10 jobs and provides livelihoods for many millions more in developing
and developed economies.
 As many as 100 million direct tourism jobs are at risk, in addition to sectors associated with
tourism such as labor-intensive accommodation and food services industries that employ 144
million workers worldwide. Small businesses (which shoulder 80% of global tourism) are
particularly vulnerable.
 In addition, the community quarantines and travel bans implemented are currently one of the
hurdles that tourism-related businesses are facing.

PRESERVING THE PLANET - MITIGATING IMPACTS ON NATURE AND CULTURE

 The sudden fall in tourism cuts off funding for biodiversity conservation. Some 7% of world
tourism relates to wildlife, a segment growing by 3% annually.
 The plummet of tourism activities also puts jobs at risk and has already led to a rise in poaching,
looting, and bushmeat consumption, partly due to the decreased presence of tourists and staff.
 For instance, many intangible cultural heritage practices such as traditional festivals and
gatherings have been halted or postponed, and with the closure of markets for handicrafts,
products, and other goods, indigenous women’s revenues have been particularly impacted.
 90% of countries have closed World Heritage Sites, with immense socio-economic consequences
for communities reliant on tourism. Further, 90% of museums closed, and 13% may never
reopen.

What is your reaction upon analyzing the article?

We are all totally down when Covid-19 came. December 31, 2019 was the time it came. The virus spreads
everywhere on earth. We all know that tourism is extremely popular and important in our economy and to other
countries economy. It is one of the world’s major economic sectors. And it is one of the sectors affected by Covid-
19 pandemic, impacting our economies and other source of incomes of all the workers. All of us want to travel but
we can’t do travel because of Covid-19 pandemic.
Transportation is one of the affected because of Covid-19 some agencies stop to operate and the
government implemented the travel ban. Tourism supports one in 10 jobs and provides livelihoods for many
millions more in both developing and developed economies. In some Small Island Developing States (SIDS),
tourism has accounted for as much as 80% of exports, while it also represents important shares of national
economies in both developed and developing countries.
As many as 100 million direct tourism jobs are at risk, in addition to sectors associated with tourism such as
labor-intensive accommodation and food services industries that provide employment for 144 million workers
worldwide. Small businesses (which shoulder 80% of global tourism) are particularly vulnerable. No nation will be
unaffected. Destinations most reliant on tourism for jobs and economic growth are likely to be hit hardest: SIDS,
Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and African countries. In Africa, the sector represented 10% of all exports in
2019.
Proposal:

Covid 19 has had a greater impact on tourism and travel behaviors that any disease out breaks in living
memory. Tourism has become one of the main public faces of COVID-19 in the international media. The disease
global reach and the application of classic disease control have had a dramatic effect on international and
domestic tourism. the nature of the tourism system means that tourism has both contributed to the spread of the
disease and has had repercussions throughout the value and supply chains of tourism. Globally, the disease has
had dramatic effects on international and domestic tourism, together with several sectoral effects including
transport, travel agencies and booking agencies, hospitality, restaurants, conventions and events, as well as
attraction, as have classic disease controls in the form of quarantine, reduced mobility and isolation.
To not lessen the tourisms now a days during the pandemic WTTC set a new recommendation for a safety of
re-opening of some business that cover of tourisms industry. Like WTTC safe travel protocol, they assure that
some business will operate safe in the amidst of the pandemic. That’s very important to protect the tourist and to
keep the safety of everyone and to restart the tourisms business.
Action Plan:

1. In terms of resuming international travel, coordinate among governments. It is to re-


establish effective operation. Consider also the international standard reporting on risk
assessments in re-opening borders.

2. In relation to COVID-19, health and hygiene protocols and standardized measures must be
strictly implemented to reduce the risk of possible infection. An international testing
protocol and contact tracing must also implement. For positive tests only, modify the
quarantine measures by replacing blanket quarantines to a more targeted approach.

3. In ensuring adaptation to the changed requirements of the sector, review the existing
regulations and legal frameworks to facilitate recovery and post-COVID-19 growth. Support
the most affected of COVID-19 within the Travel and Tourism sector.

4. Have a consistent, simple and coordinated communication to citizens and travelers. Also,
continue to support travel promotion campaigns and invest in crisis preparedness and
resilience to better equip the sector to respond to future risks
