Poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and theater are the four basic literary genres, each with its
own style, structure, subject matter, and use of figurative language. The reader has
specific expectations about what will happen in that piece because of the genre.
Modernism seeks new ways of expressing itself while rejecting traditional or accepted
views. The Main Characteristics of Modern Literature: Individualism, Experimentation,
Symbolism, Absurdity, and Formalism are the main characteristics of modern literature.
Writers in the modernist movement broke free from traditional forms and techniques.
Poets abandoned rhyme patterns in favor of writing in free poetry. All predictions were
defied by novelists. Writers created a mosaic of styles by combining pictures from the
past with present languages and subjects.
Reflection:
Typical characteristics of the contemporary period include reality-based stories with
strong characters and a believable story. Settings usually keep to the current or modern
era, so futuristic and science fiction novels are rarely included in this category.
