Introductory Message
Welcome to TVL – GTAW- NCII

The LearningActivity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Roxas City and Deped Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed
to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The TVL – GTAW-NC II Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the leaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The TVL – GTAW-NC IIActivity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning
even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and
understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments.
This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

WELDING CARBON STEEL PLATES USING GTAW -1F (WCGF)

I. Learning Competency with Code

1st Week:1.1 Set-up welding machine in accordance with job requirements,

welding procedures and specifications, technical drawings and manufacturer’s
instructions
TLE_IAGTAW9- 12WCGF-Ia-b1

II. Background Information for Learners

Setting-up of Welding Machine and accessories is the most important thing the Welder
should know to attain quality results of weld. Safety, Welding Principles and
specifications must be followed. Failure to follow the guidelines and insufficient
knowledge about the course will lead to malfunction and unsatisfactorily weld result.

The Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process, (also called Tungsten Inert
Gas process. (TIG) is based on an electric circuit and requires proper grounding of the
work piece with return cable to the power source. The torch or electrode holder is
supplied with argon gas at a certain flow rate. The gas flows out through the torch nozzle
in order to shield the tungsten electrode and the molten weld pool. The shielding gas is
pure argon. There may or may not be filler metal added during the process. Tungsten is
used for the electrode because of its high melting temperature and good electrical
characteristics.

The main advantage of TIG welding is the wide range of materials that it can weld.
TIG welding is used to great extent for welding different kinds of alloys of aluminum and
stainless steel, especially when quality is of great importance.
When the arc is struck between the electrode and the work piece, the gas is
ionized, and a stable arc through which the welding current flows is established. The arc
is the heat source for the process. The gas flow protects the electrode and the heated
area on the work piece from the oxidizing effect of the surrounding air.

The Tungsten electrode does not melt. Welding maybe done by just using the arc
to melt the edges of the base material. If necessary, additional filler metal maybe
supplied in the form of separate filler rod, which is inserted into the molten pool, and
melts together with the base material.
Equipment set-up
 Gas cylinder with supply to torch
 Torch connected to negative terminal of DC power source
 Ground clamp and return cable from work piece to positive terminal

SHIELDING GAS

Shielding gas is necessary for the GTAW process. The gas must be chemically
inactive (inert), and has several functions in the GTAW process:

 To provide the atmosphere needed for ionization, ensuring a stable arc and
suitable heat transfer.
 To protect the hot tungsten electrode against the oxidizing effect of the air.
 To protect the molten pool against the contamination and oxidation from the
air.
 To protect the hot end of the filler metal rod from oxidation.
 To protect melt pool and electrode during cooling after the arc is broken.
Argon has proven to be the most suitable gas for the purpose. It is a colorless and
odorless inert gas, heavier than air non-toxic and non flammable. It is obtain from air
which contains approximately 1% argon.

For the GTAW process, a purity of 99.95% is commonly used.

It is necessary to adjust the gas flow in liters per minute, and a regulator with flow-
meter is needed.

R-300 regulator, calibrated for adjusting gas flow

Argon is supplied in 50/200 bar gas cylinders

T-20 GTAW TORCH

Torch is a lightweight, well adapted to general applications. To ensure full
electrical insulation, the head of the torch is produced with a resilient, high
temperature non-conductive silicon coating.

The torch is supplied with 4 m cable/hose package. Separate welding cable

and gas hose.
