Grouting and Injection

The document discusses grouting and different grouting methods. It defines grouting as injecting material into cracks or cavities in structures or soil to increase strength and reduce permeability. It describes several grouting techniques including permeation, compaction, fracture, jet, and vacuum grouting. Vacuum grouting uses negative pressure to draw grout into voids, ensuring complete filling. It is commonly used for bridge structures to solve issues with traditional grouting and improve safety and durability.

GROUTING AND INJECTION

DEFINITION:

 Grouting is the process of injecting material into cavities or cracks in

concrete, masonry structure, soil, rock-mass to increase the structure’s

load-bearing capacity refers to grouting and the material used for this

objective is called grout.

 The process of grouting consists of filling pores or cavities in soil or rock

with a liquid form material to decrease the permeability and improve the

shear strength by increasing the cohesion when it is set.

 Cement base grout mixes are commonly used for gravely layers or fissure

rock treatment.

 In recent years, the availability of hydraulic base grout for soil treatment.

Why grouting is required?

 Reducing the permeability of the ground.

 Providing a barrier or cut-off to water flow in the ground.

 Increasing the strength of the ground to permit its safe excavation.

 Increasing the strength, stiffness and bearing capacity of the ground.

 Increasing the overall density of the ground.

 Infilling natural cavities.

 Infilling mineral workings.

 Infilling voids adjacent to structures.

 Compensating for ground loss caused by adjacent works.

The Different Grout Injection Methods:

 Injection grouting techniques were developed to simply fill a void in the

soil. Discussed below different methods of injection grouting system.

• Permeation Grouting

• Compaction Grouting

• Fracture Grouting

• Jet Grouting

• Vacuum Grouting

VACUUM GROUTING

DEFINITION:

Vacuum grouting is a grouting process in which a vacuum pump is used

to vacuum the outside of the plaster mold, or the reinforced plaster mold is

placed in a vacuum chamber for negative pressure operation.

How does it work?

Application of the vacuum creates an airflow pattern, drawing air from

the sub-base and down the feeder holes. Replacing the air inflow with grout

results in the complete filling of the void.

[3]
APPLICATION OF VACUUM GROUTING:

 Vacuum grouting is a commonly used process in bridge concrete

structures

 The traditional grouting process will cause corrosion and component

cracking after long-term use, which poses great safety hazards.

 It largely solves the problems left by the traditional grouting process.

 The use of vacuum grouting technology improves the safety and

durability of post-tensioned prestressed concrete structures.

ADVANTAGES OF VACUUM GROUTING:

 In the vacuum state, the air and water in the pores and the bubbles mixed

in the cement slurry are eliminated, reducing pores and bleeding.

 During the grouting process, the channel has a good sealing performance,

so that the pressure of the slurry and the filling of the entire channel are

guaranteed.

 The optimization of the process and the slurry eliminates the occurrence

of cracks and ensures the fullness and strength of the grouting.

 The vacuum grouting process is a continuous and rapid process, which

shortens the grouting time.
