What may seem common knowledge in the West when it
comes to such issues as hygiene, electricity, and most
safety standards simply isn’t present at all. The govern-
ment itself is, at worst, seen by many citizens as a corrupt,
dysfunctional, and even destabilizing element within the
country and, at best, a force that can’t dramatically impact
change — whether a two-decade-long Taliban insurgency
or keeping the lights on at night.
THREATS
Upon this backdrop we have the threats, which can
seem at times to be overwhelming. Yes, there are the
suicide bombers. Yes, there’s the Taliban and now Daesh.
But within the city limits possibly the most imminent
threat that has the capacity to do the most damage are
the organized crime syndicates. These criminal enter-
prises are spread throughout the city, and at times there’s
very little that the Afghan Uniformed Police seem to be
able to do to counter them. Indeed, many Kabulis feel

SCCYS RESPONSE
RECOIL,
We appreciate you reaching out and providing feedback from your 2,000-round
torture test on our CPX-3 model handgun. The model sent to you is a production
model, nothing custom built for a torture test, but we felt comfortable because
we have run 1,000s of rounds of Hornady Critical Defense through this model.
That being said, it comes as a surprise to hear of the failures you experienced in
testing. This result is unacceptable, and we will put corrective actions in place.
Our engineers and gunsmiths are testing the CPX-3 now, not only to see what
caused the failures in your test model, but also to ensure the quality and integ-
rity of all of our handguns. Although we are disappointed with how it performed,
SCCY we are sure this isn’t indicative of our entire production line. We will report back
CPX-3 with further findings as soon as we have them, and return your CPX-3 to finish
the test, in what we are sure will be a better outcome.

we initially prioritized creating distance
and getting the child to safety.
While this worked very well if there
was enough time to see the attack pro-
gressing or when there was an oppor-
tunity to stall the attack in some way,
the results were devastating when the
attack was sudden and violent. If the
parent took the time to get their child
to safety after the violence had already
started and before they fought back,
both the parent and the child often
ended up shot.
So we switched tactics and examined
what would happen if we instead priori-

sort of situations. In our simulations,
the number of children and parents that
suffered simulated gunshot wounds
plummeted, even with parents holding
children in their arms.
This means you may have to fight

DEFENSE PLAN
When family defense is discussed,
it often defaults to traditional gender
roles: the woman’s job is to whisk the
children to safety; the man’s job is to
stand and defend the family.
While this very well may be the best
practice for your family, I challenge you
to consider alternatives.
My husband and I are fairly evenly
matched when it comes to our defensive
skills. But while I sometimes struggle
to carry just one of our children, my
husband can collect all three of them
in his arms and carry them with ease.
He’s also the family breadwinner. He’s
capable of getting the rest of our family
to safety and can provide for our children
long term if I don’t survive a violent
encounter. That makes flipping tradi-
tional gender roles a smart choice for our
family, and it might be for yours too.
