EDUC103- The Teaching Profession

ANALYSIS: Let’s Ponder on These

1. What is meant by vocation? Mission?

 Vocation comes from the Latin word “vocare” which means to call. Vocation refers to a call to do
something like teach. Whatever is our calling, the call is always to serve. The word mission comes
from the Latin word “mission” which means “to send”. The Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary
defines mission as “task assigned”.
2. Are these two (vocation and mission) related?
 Vocation is literally your "calling", what you are good for or destined for. It usually is a
property/talent/predisposition of your person. A mission, in contrast, is a particular task given to you.
Even if you are on "a mission from God", there may be retirement from it eventually. If you take as
an example biblical prophets, usually their vocation was being a prophet. But their missions were
more concrete, like warning the town of Ninive. Most prophets were given a number of missions.
These are how vocation and mission are related. You were called for a purpose, to accomplish a
mission while on earth which is to teach.
3. Teaching as a job or a mission. What’s the difference?
 Some teachers regard teaching as just a job. Others see it as their mission. Teaching as a mission
exists under the gloss of procedure everywhere. If you loose that sense of mission then your career
will be a short one as there is no real reason to stay. Many jobs, ordinary jobs are a better choice for
anyone with a degree and some motivation. If you are doing it only because you are paid for it, it’s a
job, but if you are doing it not only for the pay but also for service, it’s a mission. There are better
things to do with your life if you don’t feel that teaching is important to the world, that thought
changes everything. If teaching is not of central importance to you and the world you wish to live in,
please do not go in to teaching.

APPLICATION: Let’s Apply What We Learned

ANSWERS:
1. As a professional teacher, helping children become more human is you must first be a good teacher
to them. I mean be a human first. You have to show them how to be a human, be a model for them.
treat them with respect and impart as much knowledge to them as you could, as a teacher. Be the best
human teacher you can be, by treating your children as the best humans that they are - by following
child development and brain research to give them the best foundation for human life I can.
2. Our life's true calling is always been to loved, according to teacher Sabrina, the speaker in the video.
She said that the call is not to teach, the call isn't our progression, because the call is always been to
loved, 'we are more determined to address our context'. Life's true calling is the three things that
teacher Sabrina said in the video. The first one is the Purpose, second is Context, and lastly the
Beliefs. Purpose, why are we here? What is our purpose here? Context, what are the context that we
want to address? And Beliefs, what we believed in? If we love our profession we can easily deal with
it. As a future teacher we can apply the things that teacher Sab said in the video, like she shares the
things that she received from her parents like the love and support. As a teacher we must know our
purpose. We are not just going to teach, but as a teacher we have to love the students and know the
stories behind them. And help students who are not that good in class, because that's the role of being
a teacher. Treat students well because it can reflect to the students, if we treat them well they are
going to treat others well too. If the students are learning from their teachers, the teachers as well are
also learning from their students. Because each student has an inspiring story that touch our hearts.
'If you are a teacher never stop believing a person'.
