Final Examination Ωo
Q1. Consider two concentric cylinders as shown in the figure. The outer cylinder
rotates with angular velocity Ωo and the inner cylinder is fixed. Find the velocity
profile between the cylinders. Assume that the flow is steady, incompressible, ro
axis-symmetric and that the cylinders are infinitely long. Also assume no body
forces are present and pressure is uniform everywhere. Show detailed ri
calculations and justify at every step using proper reasoning. You may find the

following equations useful.

1 ∂ 1 ∂ ∂
rur + uθ + uz = 0
r ∂r r ∂θ ∂z

( r )
ρuruθ 1 ∂p uθ
ρ ( u ⃗ . ∇ ) uθ + =− 2
+ ρfθ + μ ∇ uθ − 2 [10]
r r ∂θ

Q2. Consider lifting flow over a cylinder. Using 2D potential flow analysis, obtain all possible stagnation points. Also

obtain the pressure coefficient distribution on the cylinder surface. List all assumptions made.
[10]

Q3. The velocity components of an unsteady 2D flow are given by

x 2y
u= v=
1+t 2+t
Obtain streamline and path line for this flow that passes through (x0, y0) at t = 0 . Plot them as t → ∞.
[10]
∂ui
Q4. Show that for an incompressible flow τij > = 0 . Is it still valid for a compressible flow? Here τij is the

diviatoric part of the stress tensor given by ∂xj

∂ui ∂uj 2 ∂uk
( ∂xj ∂xi 3 ∂xk )
τij = μ + − δij
