Ecological Globalization
Ecological Globalization
As globalization continue to rise, the climate change and growing inequality has became
a global concern wherein these phenomena affects our lives especially our ecology in various
ways. Climate change will deepen social inequality— the biggest threat to all life on our planet.
According to UN Secretary - General António Guterres, all of humanity and the planet Earth are
inextricably linked. Many ecological issues have resulted from the globalization revolution,
including the scarcity in our resources, overcrowding, decreasing biodiversity, pollution and the
climate change resulting to social inequality. All of these issues are global in scope, the product
of collective human effort and the necessitate a concerted solution. However, there are still
disagreements over environmental challenges, and despite technological advancements, few
multilateral actions have been adopted. The environment has been gravely harmed by thus
period of globalization and an immediate action is required.
Unsustainable types of ecological globalization are now widely acknowledged as posing
a threat to all life in Earth. Not surprisingly, the impact of climate change on poverty was
frequently extended to include the impact of climate change on social inequality. In line with
this, Skoutias (2012) describes climate change has a regressive effect, affecting the
impoverished more than the wealthy. It notes that those people who already suffered from
social inequality are particularly affected by the climate change negatively. Relatively, it is
possible for inequality to worsen due to the unequal deterioration of physical, human and
social resources. Even climate change adaptation expenditure is frequently found to be
motivated by wealth rather than need resulting in further inequality. Climate change is putting
urban areas at risk with significant consequences for human health, economy and the
ecosystem ( Georgeson et al. 2016).
However, UN Secretary – General Guterres remarks at the Web Summit year 2017, he
calls for combining Energies to slow Impacts of Climate Change, Reverse Growing Inequality. So,
how is the world going to solve the looming problem of climate change and inequality? For
Guterres, he emphasized the importance of combining innovation and technology, innovation
and public policy to make sure that innovation works for the good of human kind. Over the past
years, we can’t deny the fact that our world has been improving because of new technological
advancements and innovations but there was still some collateral damage to this enormous
growth resulting to climate change and growing inequality. As the quotation says, “ We need to
be attentive to be able to respond to the eventual collateral damage that exists”. There is a way
to respond. Responding to climate change with action and increasing inequality with a fight for
a more equitable globalization.
Implementing a solution in facing these enormous difficulties that we are facing in the
different aspects of ecological globalization and social inequalities is a difficult responsibility to
do but with the help of new technological advancements and innovations as well as fourth
Industrial Revolution, we can confidently respond to the society’s problem. Despite the fact
that human being has caused significant damage to our environment and ecology, we must
begin to contribute to the ecosystem. Government cannot do it alone. All of us should take a
stand and respond to make a better world for us to live and that will benefit us all.
