Failed Part Identification
CAUTION: Prior to starting any parts replacement, the failed part must be positively identified.
This is particularly important with components for external storage shelves. Shelf numbering may
change between system reboots on some DDOS versions. In later versions of DDOS shelf
numbering is persistent but shelf renumbering can be manually initiated, and the renumbering
occurs at the next reboot.
The failed part must be positively identified and the physical location verified so that the proper part is
replaced. Various methods for identification exist and will vary with the part.
In most cases identification of the failed part will require access to either CLI or GUI access to the Data
Domain system. This may require customer assistance to gain access to the DD system CLI or GUI.
CAUTION: Never leave a disk slot empty for more than a few minutes while the shelf is
operational. Overheating may occur. Have a replacement disk available on-site before removing a
failed disk.
The two power supply/cooling units for an ES20 External Shelf are accessed from the back panel.

Do not remove a failed power/cooling unit unless a replacement can be added immediately. The system
should not be run with a missing unit. A unit can be replaced while the shelf is running and active.
To remove a power unit:
1. [ ] Make sure that the handle is completely open, pulled out to a nearly horizontal position.
2. [ ] Leaving the handle open, slide the unit into place until the open handle causes noticeable
resistance.
3. [ ] Pull the handle down to the vertical until the latches click over the face of the handle.
4. [ ] Attach the power supply cord.
5. [ ] Click the on/off switch to on.
