Structural design is a very essential science in many civil engineering works due to the
safety of the design and the economical of the constructed work. These structural designs
with reinforcing concrete aims at determine the size of each structural component and the
necessary reinforcement that should be applied to the structural members.
For these designs we use limit state design approach according to Ethiopian building
code standard (EBCS 1, 1995)

DESIGN OF ROOF

1. DESIGN OF ROOF
The roof to be designed consists of two parts: ribbed slab and roof truss, as shown in the
roof layout below. The analysis and design of roof truss is made for wind action making
use of EBCS-1, 1995. Throughout the design steps we utilized the nominal dimensions
from the drawings, but as regard to the type of truss we made our own choice since there
is no given information. The analysis of ribbed slab roof was made with the use of SAP
2000 V.7.4

1.1.1 Loading
A. Wind Load
We used EBCS-1, 1995 for the determination of wind load. Since the height of our
building is less than 200m and dynamic coefficient Cd < 1.2, the simple procedures the
code is applied.
Wind pressures, both external and internal, are determined as per section 3.5 of the code;
8
Cpe is the external pressure coefficient
- Reference wind pressure
qref = 0.5*p*Vref2
Where p is air density at altitude of 1500m (approximate) above sea level
which is 1kg/m3
Vref is the reference wind velocity and is given as
Vref = CDIRCTEMCALTVref,0
Taking the three coefficients as unity
Vref = 22 m/s
Finally we get the reference wind pressure to be:
qref = 0.5*1kg/m3*22m/s
qref = 242 Pa
The site is assumed to fall under category IV which is urban area in which at least
15% of the surface is covered with buildings and their average height exceeds 15m.
Then from EBCS-1, 1995 table 3.2 we get:
Since the actual height of the building, Z = 39.03m, is between Zmin and 200m, we
use the following formula for the calculation of the roughness coefficient.
9
Cr(z) = KT ln(Z/Zo)
Substituting the values
Cr(z) = 0.879 and
Ce(z) = 2.249
This coefficient depends on the size of the loaded area, A, and as per the code it is
given as;

and compression gets to be greater than the values calculated. Since the capacity is very
large compared to the values revision should be taken to be economical.

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF SLAB
25
2. DESIGN OF SLAB
Slabs are horizontal structural elements which transfer service loads to the frame
elements. Generally there are different types of slabs for this project all the floor system
is design as a ribbed slab. Ribbed slabs are preferred when we have long spans and they
have advantages of the following
In one way ribbed slab the supporting ribs (joists) are closely spaced. According to EBCS
2, 1995 page 25 ribbed or waffle slabs may be treated as solid slab for the purpose of
analysis, provided that the flange of the structural topping and transverse ribs has
sufficient torsoinal stiffness.

Topping should be > 40 mm nor less than L/10
Take Topping=60mm
Where L=clear distance between ribs.
Using c/c span of ribs =400mm
And this center to center to center spacing should be minimized for the following reasons
To minimize the effect or impact of concentrated loads.
To decrease the size of the filling HCB.
To increase the bond between the HCB.

DEAD LOAD FOR THE DESIGN
Terrazzo tile -0.02*23*0.4 =0.184KN/m
2cm cement screed -0.02*20*0.4 =0.16KN/m
Self weight -(0.06*0.4+0.08*0.2)*24 =0.96KN/m
Load from light weight HCB - 1KN/m
Partition wall -(*l*h)*0.4
Marble -0.02*27*0.4KN/m3=0.266KN/m
Using the above values we determine the total dead load of each panel can be found.
Analysis
For the analysis, we model the ribs as continuous beams and the direction of ribs is
chosen in the shorter direction but some ribs run in the longer direction in contrast to the
above theory for construction simplicity.
By creating different combination for the continuous ribs and using their design load
(Pd=1.3dl+1.6ll) we analyze using sap then we can get support moment, span moment
and reaction force for every panel of the floor system

Each frame of the structure has its own stiffness. Thus, the storey shear is shared by each
frame according to their stiffness. The story frame shear force distribution is found in the
link “STORY FRAME FORCE DISTRIBUTION”. Storey stiffness is given by the
summation of the D-values of each column in both axes.

6. DESIGN OF COLUMN
Determination of story buckling load, Ncr (EBCS-2, 1995 Art. 4.4)
1. The buckling load of a story may be assumed to be equal to that of the substitute
beam-column frame defined in fig. 4.6 (on Art. 4.4.12) and may be determined from the
equation:
Ncr = EIe
Le2
Where
Le = the effective length of the substitute column
EIe is the effective length of the substitute column designed.
Ncr is its critical value for failure in sway mode (According to EBCS2,
1995(Art.4.4.4)
2. In lieu of a more accurate determination, the effective stiffness of a column EIe in
the above equation may be taken as:
4. The equivalent reinforcement area, As,tot, in the substitute column to be used for
calculating is obtained by designing the substitute column at each floor level to carry the
storey design axial load and amplified sway moment at the critical section.
5. The first-order design moment, Md1, at the critical section of the substitute column
may be determined as shown below:
158
Md1 = (1 + 3) *H*L
(1 + 2 + 6)
Where
1 and 2 are defined in Art. 4.4.7 and shall not exceed 10.
Taking in to account the size of the frame and the magnitude of lateral forces imposed
due to earthquake, the frame on axis-3 is assumed to be sufficiently stiff for it to be
accurate to neglect any additional internal forces or moments arising from horizontal
displacement of its nodes. In other words the frame is assumed as non sway frame.

8. DESIGN OF ISOLATED FOOTING
8.1 LOADING
Soil Type
Since there was no profile of the soil, we assumed the ground soil type as dense sand and
gravel. Hence from EBCS-7, Table 6.3 we found the presumed design bearing resistance
to be 560KPa. And the soil pressure distribution was assumed to be planar.
Material Data
8.2 PROPORTIONING
0.5m
Let a = b
- Eccentricities
ex = Mx/Punf. = 13.84/3769.1 = 0.0037 0.5m
190
560 = 3769.1 * (1 0.0222/b 0.0126/b)/b2
By trial and error we get:
b = 2.6
Hence a = 2.6
To determine the self weight of the footing and surcharge load on the footing, let’s
assume: D = 1m
sub soil = 18KN/m3 and 1m depth of soil above the soil
191
σmax = 518KPa > 0 ………………………...Ok
The stresses at the four corners becomes
σ1 = 528KPa
σ2 = 525.6KPa
σ3 = 520.7KPa
σ4 = 518KPa
Acting shear
Vact = 4101.72 – (0.5 + d)2 * 523.1

= 3970.95 – 523.1d – 523.1d2
Shear resistance
Vres = 0.5fctd*(1+50)*Ud
= 0.5*1.14*103 *(1+50*0.002)*(2+4d)*d
= 628.7*(2d+4d2)
= 1257.4 + 2514.8d2

3970.95 – 523.1d – 523.1d2 1257.4 + 2514.8d2
3037.9d2 + 1780.5d – 3970.95 ≥ 0
d2 + 0.586d – 1.307 ≥ 0
By trial and error we get:
d = 0.89m
Thus D = d + c + Ø , using Ø20
192
D = 890 + 50 + 20
D = 960mm < 1000mm (assumed) ……………safe against punching shear failure
Acting shear
Vact. = (525.3 + 1.3d)*(1.05 – d)*2.8

Shear resistance
Vrest. = 0.3fctd *(1+50)*bwd

= 1053.4d
For safe condition
Vact. Vrest.
1544.38 – 1467d – 3.64d2 1053.4d
3.64d2 + 2520.4d – 1544.38 ≥ 0
d2 + 692.42d – 424.8 ≥ 0
By solving the above equation we get:
193
d = 0.61m < 1m (assumed) ……….Safe against diagonal shear failure
This imply that punching shear governs (D = 960mm). Thus our assumption
(D=1000mm) is safe and economical. The effective depth becomes
d=D–c–Ø
= 1000 – 50 – 20 Using Ø20
= 930mm
Therefore safe footing size is 2.8m x 2.8m x 1m and effective depth is 0.93m.
194
Therefore M1-1 = {(523.39*1.152/2) + [(526.8-523.39)*1.152/3]}*2.8
= 973.3 KN.m

9. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Conclusion
For the design of roof wind load analysis was made according to the provisions of
EBCS-1, 1995.Because of the necessity of free zone for light circulation the span of
the trusses are made of steel truss and the roof was better be done with transparent
roofing material.
For the calculation of center of mass we apply 50cm by 50cm column dimension and
for the beams we assign a dimension of 40cm*30cm for beams those carries the ribs
and 30*30cm for the beams that runs in the direction of the ribs but when we come to
the design those dimension are changed.
From the typical design first floor and the other design for flexural moment of all
ribbed slabs, we can say that the bars needed at span of each ribs is equal to two and
for the support it depend on the length of the slab and the force applied to it but most
often it need 2-5 reinforcing bar.
198
The landing beams around the staircase are staggered, that is they are not at the same
level with the beams at the floor level , but for calculating the stiffness values it has
been assumed that the landing beams are at the same level with the floor, beams,
otherwise beams of zero stiffness could have been introduced at each landing level.
Beams have been designed as per the specification of EBCS-2, 1995. In this
particular project there has been two types of beams the one which carries the ribs
and this beams are 0.3m in depth and 0.8m wide because much of the transferred load
act on them .And the other one lies in the direction or the ribs this beams are 0.3m in
depth and 0.4m wide because this beams transfer only the partition load and the load
comes from earth quake action.
The foundation footing was made square footing because both axes have similar
probability of experiencing the biaxial moment. Besides square footings are simpler
for supervision in construction.
Finally in the design of high rise buildings care should be taken before analysis.
Because there may be different unexpected loads and different structures like
submerged beams which are necessary to improve the architectural feature of the
building.
Recommendation
Since the complexity of the structure and the number of structural elements are so
many revision of the whole work is needed because for high rise building the p-
delta effect should be considered to come up to safe and economical structure.
