Lesson Plan in Math (Math 206)

The lesson plan teaches students how to evaluate algebraic expressions. It begins with reviewing simplifying numerical expressions using an online quiz application. Students will then participate in an activity where they substitute letter values in words to derive numerical values. The lesson demonstrates evaluating examples like 6x^2 + 3 when x = 0, -2, and 1/2. It concludes with dividing students into groups to evaluate given expressions, with different values for n, and be scored on accuracy, timeliness, and cooperation.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 7

CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of algebraic expressions, the
properties of real numbers as applied in linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner is able to model situations using oral, written, graphical, and algebraic
expressions, linear equations, and inequalities in one variable.

LEARNING COMPETENCY
The learner evaluates algebraic expressions for given values of the variables. (M7AL-IIc-4)

I. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the Grade 7 students should be able to perform the following tasks
with 75% accuracy:
1) Identify the steps in evaluating algebraic expressions;
2) Apply the steps of evaluating algebraic expressions in real-life situations;
3) Show appreciation in working with group activity; and
4) Participate actively in the class discussion.

II. SUBJECT MATTER:

3) Review/Drill
Simplify the following multi-operation numerical expressions using the Quizizz app.
A Quizizz Application is an online assessment tool that allows teachers and students
create and use one another’s quizzes. After providing students with a unique access
code, a quiz can be presented live as a timed competition or used for homework with a
specific deadline.
The students must go to Quizizz join and enter the code.
Expressions Simplified answer
16 – 4 + 8 10
16 × 5 ÷ (12 − 7) 22
(45 + 7) ÷ (12 ÷ 3) + 9 35
[(75 − 26) ÷ 7] + [4 × (84 ÷ 12)] 16
(7 + 15) ÷ (19 − 8) − [23 (5 − 6)] 20
How to solve multi-operation mathematical expressions?
What does PEMDAS/GEMDAS stand for?
How to perform the PEMDAS/GEMDAS?
1. Remove Grouping symbols like ( ), [ ], and { } by simplifying first the enclosed
expressions, beginning from the innermost pair.
2. Simplify expressions with Exponents.
3. Perform all Multiplication and Division from left to right whichever comes first.
4. Perform all Addition and Subtraction from left to right whichever comes first.

B. Developmental Activity
1. Activity
Ask students where they usually hear the word substitution.

How does substitution in basketball/volleyball/soccer, etc. being executed?

(The teacher will present a PowerPoint presentation of the activity “Find My Value”.)
Let A=1 F=6 K=11 P=16 U=21 Z=26
B=2 G=7 L=12 Q=17 V=22
C=3 H=8 M=13 R=18 W=23
D=4 I=9 N=14 S=19 X=24
E=5 J=10 O=15 T=20 Y=25
Find the equivalent value of the given words by substituting the numerical value above to
each letter of the word and adding all the numerical digits.

For example:
H U M B L E
8 + 21 + 13 + 2 + 12 + 5 = 61

1. KNOWLEDGE
K N O W L E D G E
11 + 14 + 15 + 23 + 12 + 5 + 4 + 7 + 5 = 96

2. HARDWORK
H A R D W O R K
8 + 1 + 18 + 4 + 23 + 15 + 18 + 11 = 98

3. ATTITUDE
A T T I T U D E
1 + 20 + 20 + 9 + 20 + 21 + 4 + 5 = 100

Life Tips:
The best ingredients/secrets to win life are: be a hardworking person, gain
valuable/impactful knowledge, but the most essential of all is to have a positive attitude
and humility despite success.

2. Analysis
a) How did you find the activity?
b) What challenges did you encounter in the activity?
c) How do you derive with your answer?

When a number is substituted or replaced for the variable in a given algebraic expression, the
expression takes a numerical value. And finding the value is what we call, “Evaluating the
Algebraic Expression”.

3. Abstraction
Let’s do this example.
Evaluate the expression 𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑, when:
a. 𝒙 = 𝟎
b. 𝒙 = −𝟐
𝟏
c. 𝒙 = 𝟐

For letter a, how do we evaluate? What should we do first?

Let the student show how to substitute the value of x in a in the expression.
6(0)2 + 3
What will be the next step?
Let the student demonstrate how to apply the rules of PEMDAS in the expression.
6(0)2 + 3
= 6(0) + 3
=0+3
=3
For letter b, 𝑥 = −2.
𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑
= 6(−2)2 + 3
= 6(4) + 3
= 24 + 3
= 27
𝟏
For letter c, 𝑥 = 𝟐
𝟔𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑
1 2
= 6 (2) + 3
1
= 6 (4) + 3
6
=4+3
6 12
=4+ 4
18 9 1
= 𝑜𝑟 𝑜𝑟 4 2 𝑜𝑟 4.5
4 2

In evaluating algebraic expressions, what are the steps that we need to follow?
1. Substitute the given value to the variable.
2. Perform the indicated operations by following the rules of PEMDAS/GEMDAS.
a. Remove Grouping symbols like ( ), [ ], and { } by simplifying first the enclosed
expressions, beginning from the innermost pair.
b. Simplify expressions with Exponents.
c. Perform all Multiplication and Division from left to right whichever comes first.
d. Perform all Addition and Subtraction from left to right whichever comes first.

4. Application
Now that you already know how to evaluate algebraic expressions, we will be having a
group activity. The teacher will divide the class into two groups. Each group will choose
their leaders. The leader will be the one who can ask the teacher about the activity and
also responsible for dividing the tasks between the members of the group.
Each group will be given an activity envelope where they can find the materials for the
activity and the expressions that your group will be going to evaluate. Write the answer
on a cartolina/manila paper.
The group activity will be scored according to this standard/rubric:

II. Solve the problem.

A cashier of a certain company is paid Php 550.00 per day for an 8-hour shift. Each extra hour
is paid Php 80.00. To compute for the cashier’s salary for the week with 6 extra hours, the
manager uses the expression,
𝟓𝟓𝟎𝒙 + 𝟖𝟎𝒚
where 𝑥 = the number of days worked in a week (5 days)
𝑦 = the number of extra hours (6 hours)
How much is the cashier’s salary for the week?
V. ASSIGNMENT
Solve the problem.
In Economics, Revenue is the total monetary of the value of goods or services sold
while Cost is the collective expenses incurred to generate revenue over a period of
time, expressed in terms of monetary value and Profit is the difference between
revenue and cost, when costs exceed revenue, there is a negative profit or loss.

The following mathematical statements describe cost and revenue in pesos from the
production of sales of 𝑥 units of toy cars.
Cost C of manufacturing: 𝐶 = 20𝑥 + 15
Cost M of marketing: 𝑀 = 𝑥 2 − 3𝑥 + 8
Revenue R from sales: 𝑅 = 2𝑥 2 + 6𝑥

1. What is the cost of manufacturing 50 units of toy cars?

2. What is the cost of marketing 50 units of toy cars?
3. What is the total cost of manufacturing and marketing 50 units of toy cars?
4. What is the revenue from selling 50 units of toy cars?
5. What is the profit from selling 50 units of toy cars? (Profit = Revenue – Costs)
