1. Define Problem Solving

Answer: The process of finding solutions to difficult or complex issues.

2. Who is George Polya? Provide a brief description on his life background.

Answer: Geoge Polya was a Hungarian mathematician. He was a professor of Mathematics
from 1914 to 1940 at ETH Zurich and from 1940 to 1953 at Stanford University.
3. What is the contribution of George Polya along Problem-solving?

Answer: He made fundamental contributions to combinations, number theory, numerical

analysis and probability theory. He is also noted for his work in heuristics and mathematics
education.

4. List and elaborate explain Polya’s problem-solving principles.

Answer: George Polya’s problem- solving principles is a four-step process in which he made
it easy for everyone to understand.

• Step 1: Understand the problem – in order to understand the problem, one must be attentive in
reading the problem carefully. So that it may be easy to analyze and assign all the needed
components and data that are involved in problem-solving.

• Step 2: Devise a plan. (Translate) – the next step is to devise a plan, meaning you will come
up with a way to solve for X like setting up the equation to solve for the problem.

• Step 3: Carry out the plan (Solve) – This step is the most crucial and important part for which,
you should be able to solve for X and carry out your devise plan.

• Step 4: Look back – The last step is to look back to check and interpret if you used all the
information needed to get the correct answer or result.

Answer the following problems. Use Polya’s method in Problem-solving.

1) When 6 times a number is increased by 4, the result is 40. Find the number.

(Let x be the number)

Equation: 6 (x) + 4 = 40

Solve for x: 6x + 4 = 40
6x = 40 – 4 To Check: Final answer:
6x = 36 6(6) +4 =40
6x = 36 36 + 4 = 40 the (x) number is
6x 6 40 = 40 6
x = 6

2) One number exceeds another number by 5. If the sum of the two numbers is 39, find
the smaller number. (Let x be the smaller number and y be the larger number.)

Equation: x + y =39
Solve for x: x + y = 39 Solve for y: To Check: Final answer:
x+ y = 39 x+ y = 39 17 is the
x+ (y+ 5) = 39 17 + 22 = 39 smaller number
2x = 39 -5 17 + y = 39 39 = 39
2x = 34 y = 39 - 17
2x = 34 y = 22
2x 2
x=17

3) If one number is three times as large as another number and the smaller number is
increased by 19, the result is 6 less than twice the larger number. What is the larger
number?

(Let x be the number.)

Equation: x+ 19 = 2 (3x) -6 To Check:

Solve for x: x+19 = 2 (3x) -6 x + 19 = 2 (3x) -6

x+ 19 = 6x – 6 5 + 19 = 2 (3 (5)) -6
24 = 2 (15) -6
-x+ x + 19 = -x +6x -6 24 = 30 - 6
19 = 5x – 6+6 24 =24
19 = 5x – 6

19 + 6 = 5x – 6+ 6 Final answer:
25 = 5x
25 = 5x Larger number is 15.
5 5x

5=x

4) The sum of three consecutive integer is 306. What is the largest integer?
(Let x be the number)
3

Equation: x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 306 2
Solve:
1

x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 306
3x + 3 = 306
3x + 3-3 = 306 -3 0 (x) 1 2 3
x x
3x = 303
3x = 303
3x 3
x = 101
1st integer (x) = 101
To Check: 2nd integer (x+1) = 102
x+2= 3rd integer (x+2) = 103
101 + 2 = 103

x + (x +1) + (x+2) = 306 Final answer:

101 + (101 +1) + (101 + 2) = 306
101 + (102) + (103) = 306
The third integer is the largest number.
101 + 205 = 306 3 rd integer is 103.
306 = 306

Instructions: solve the following. Provide a concise, comprehensive solution.

1. A census-taker knocks on the door, and asks the woman inside how many children she has and
how old they are. “I have three daughters, their ages are whole numbers, and the product of the
ages is 36.” says the mother. “That’s not enough information” responds the census-taker.

Mother: “I’d tell you the sum of their age, but you’ll still be stumped.”
Census-taker: “I wish you’d tell me more.”
Mother: “Okay, my oldest daughter Annie likes dogs.”

What are the ages of the three daughters?

Comprehensive solution:

▪ The census-taker asked about the ages of the three daughters, the mother gave 3 clues. First
clue is that all of the ages are whole numbers. Second clue, the product of the ages is 36.
and the Third clue, her “oldest daughter” named Annie loves dogs. so, to speak, that the 3
whole numbers with a product of 36, has one greater number than both the others since
“oldest” was mentioned, I simply thought of a solution in terms with he set of clues have
gathered and for me there are different possible answers: (9,2,2) (12, 3,1) (6,3,2) (4,3,2) all
of these are products of 36.

2. Consider the following diagram. Can you connect each small box on the top with it’s same
letter mate on the bottom with paths that don’t cross one another, nor leave the boundaries of
the large box?

A C

Comprehensive solution:

▪ To be able to connect and match the top boxed letters to the bottom boxed letter, it should
not intersect or collide the connected paths/lines, I have tried many times and resulted to

3. What is the next letter in the sequence? O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, ...?

Comprehensive solution:

▪ Analyzing the letter sequence for the next letter my answer is N and T. Why? the letter
sequence is arranged in abbreviation method. Simply:

O – One
T – Two
T – Three
F – Four
F -Five
S – Six
S – Seven
E – Eight
N – Nine
T – Ten

therefore, the answer is: O, T, T, F, F, S, S, E, N, T and so on.

4. Pat wants to take a 1.5-meter-long sword onto a train, but the conductor won’t allow it as carry-
on luggage. and the baggage person won’t take any item, whose greatest dimension exceeds 1
meter. What should Pat do?

Comprehensive solution:

Answers in problem-solving

A. There are different strategies in problem-solving. these are the following:

1. Draw diagram- this problem-solving process is use with drawing diagrams to identify and
analyze problem solving questions using an illustration to plan out, detect and solve for possible
answers and or solutions.

Example: Dan decided to walk home from his work 15 meters to his house. Draw a diagram.

Dan’s 15
workplace meters Home

2. Make a systematic list- this problem-solving process is used when answering combined
problems that need one or two solutions, thus it is easier for the solver to identify when writing
down a systematic list to answer the given problem.

Example: Anna has 4 different flavors of cereal boxes. there’s honey flavored cereal, strawberry
flavored, classic milk, and chocolate. She decided to get the strawberry cereal box which was on
the left side of the chocolate box and the right side of the honey flavored cereal that was then
beside the classic milk box. Where is the strawberry flavored cereal located?

Classic Honey Straw Choco

Milk Flavor berry late

3. Guess-and-check- this problem-solving process is used by the solver in guessing for the possible
solutions by using his logic skills and common sense.

Example:

11 | P a g e
How many clouds are there in the box?

4. Look for a pattern – this problem-solving process is used by the solver to spot the pattern of the
questions. It is immensely helpful to know the “rule” of the pattern and visualize possible
solutions.

Example:

In the box below answer the missing object what comes next? *(this is an example of a math
problem for kindergarten level)

?
5. Work Backwards- this problem-solving process used by the solver to understand the final solution
given as a problem. The best example of which is finding the directions see example below.

Example:

Fred is finding his way out of the maze he needs to move in the north direction, then turn to west
and straight down south to see he exit.
N

Start
Finish
W E

12 | P a g e
6. Simplify the Problem- this strategy is used by the solver to simply the problem or to understand
much better so that it will be easy to solve for the solution.

Example: Josh has 2 apples on his hand. His brother gave him 3 more apples and his sister asked 2
from him. How many apples does he have left?

?
7. Eliminate possibilities- when solving for a problem the solver must know his plan or formulate a
plan on how to solve for possible answers. Therefore, knowing how to eliminate possible wrong
answers and revising to get the correct one.

8. use a variable- this is by then that the problem should be solved using variables in order for the
solver to get the near possible answer.

B. Problem-solving strategy: draw a diagram Problems 1- 18.

The distance learning experience for me gave me a striving attitude to set my priorities straight and be

responsible enough to handle certain situations during the completion of the activities/tasks given. by

learning and understanding each of the lessons, and answering the tasks or activities, I was able to

cope up and make adjustments for the “new normal” set up. It was quite hard at first because “the new

normal” was a new thing for all of us not just the students but as well as our beloved teachers. I

realized that the classroom setting is much more convenient than the distance learning setup because

of some disadvantages of uncertain situations like poor signal and less access to the internet but, with

an optimistic mindset I was able to value the things that I have access to,(i.e: laptop, cellphone,

internet) students like me should value not just the gadgets, modular learning, access to the internet

but also, the teachers who took time to prepare and make effort and gave their very best to guide and

help each students in this trying times.

Hi there!

My name is Arvy Shaun C. Yorac, a standing 4th year here in Rapu-Rapu Community College
(RRCC) taking up Bachelor of Education in elementary education. I’m 24 years old a resident of
P-5 Población, Rapu-Rapu, Albay. Father of two adorable kids. A little about me? Well, I’m an
introvert person (says the mother of my kids) lol. maybe because I don’t usually go outside and I
always have trouble socializing with my peers. ALSO, I have a stage fright but I have passion for
music. I can almost play any instruments like guitar, piano, flute, drums, and ukulele. I
sometimes sing when I’m in my zone. sometimes I also make some handicrafts like a model ship
made out of recycled material like carton boxes.

I’m also into digital competitive games, like shooting games and strategy games. and lastly, I love
sketching.
my motto in life would be: “in the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity”. – I lived by this
quote because for me in every struggle, in every failure and in every silent battle I face in life
there will be new opportunities to come. new beginnings, and new chances to seek. you make
your own choices and get fine result in the end. and just like in problem-solving I start to
understand life, devise my own plan, carry it out and I never forget to look back from what I’ve
been through.
