Final Capstone Reflection

The student learned about history, market research, and time management skills through their capstone project of creating and selling historical Lego models. Their project helped educate others about history in an engaging way. The student is most proud of staying consistently on task to complete their long-term goal and wishes they had started creating new models and working harder at the beginning.

Final Capstone reflection

Daniel Lesjak
The capstone is a unique and demanding challenge. In completing it, what did you learn
about your subject? Your skill set? Yourself?
Throughout the capstone journey I was able to greatly increase my knowledge in a
number of fields. One of these fields was history. By conducting research on the models I was
making, my understanding for historical events was solidified. Another skill I acquired was the
ability to do market research. This skill was mostly acquired through trial and error. I also
learned that I was able to focus more on weekend rather than weekdays. I think this was
because I was usually kind of tired when I get home on weekdays. On weekends I am able to
wake up and get right to work on my capstone. Knowing this allowed me to plan ahead, which
increased my productivity. I based my plans around working hard on the weekend so that I had
less work to do on weekdays.

How is your project relevant to you, the school or the community-at-large?

This project is relevant to me because it allowed me to increase my knowledge about
historical events in a way that was productive. This allowed me to grow my understanding while
also being able to save up money for my future.

How did you demonstrate the six core competencies throughout this project?
Some examples:
Communication- I had to present information to the buyers about the models I was selling. This
had to be done in a concise manner due to there being a word limit.
Creative thinking- I used my creativity when making the prototypes for the models.
Critical thinking- I had to analyze the market and figure out the best way to present my models.
I also used critical thinking when setting up the orders for the parts that I was going to sell.
What impact if any did your capstone project have?
My capstone has the impact of helping educate people on historical events. The models
do this by introducing people to historical events with a system that they are familiar with
(Lego). This provides an easy transition to learning more about historical events, which can help
benefit peoples outlook on current and past situations.

Thinking about the whole process and your finished project, what are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the fact that I was able to consistently stay on task when it came to
completing my capstone and it’s required work. I am proud of this because it shows that I am
able to achieve long term goals that I set out for myself. This gives me the proper mindset that I
need to further be productive.

What was a difficulty you encountered and how did you solve the problem?
One difficulty I encountered was timing my orders so that I didn’t have too much or too
little stock on hand. As already stated, I overcame this difficulty mostly through trial and error. I
was able to get a feel for how the market works, which allows me to order more or less stock
based off of how much I think I need. For example right before Christmas I plan to have more
stock because that is when people are buying gifts. This causes the demand to be far greater
than normally.

What is one thing about your finished project you wish you could change? Why?
One thing that I wish I could change is the rate at which I started creating new models.
At the start of my capstone I had plans in my head for multiple new products, but I only finished
making them towards the end of the capstone. So far a larger variety seems to be a lot more
beneficial. This leads me to the conclusion that it would have been helpful if I had started work
on the prototypes at the beginning, possibly as a side project while I continued with the work I
was already doing.

What advice would you give to a student who will be completing their capstone project next
year?
I would advise the student to not fall behind with their capstone related assignments.
This is due to how if they fall behind, it is very difficult to catch back up. By setting weekly goals
a student is able to stay on progress and track what they need to do. This also gives the student
a greater sense of accomplishment from how they are able to see their progress.
What source from your research helped you the most? (Or least)?—
The source that helped me the least is my source about small businesses and social
media. The source that helped me the most is the source about the impact that Covid 19 had
on small businesses. This source helped me because it also had information on small business
strategies.

What is one thing about your approach to your project that you wish you could change?
Why?
One thing about my approach to my project that I wish I could change is my work ethic
at the start of the capstone. I started off with a lot of procrastination which slowed down my
progress at the start. This had an impact on my capstone because I had to work harder at the
end. Once I was able to get the momentum going I was able to procrastinate a lot less.
