INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

Machinefabriek L. Straatman was established in 1902 in The Netherlands. The company rapidly
grew in the market of steam boilers and ship repairs. Through the years, Straatman developed
sophisticated products for the dredging, fabrication, oil & gas and maritime industry.

In 2004 Machinefabriek L. Straatman took over all the activities of “Van de Graaf’s Werktuig- en
Constructiebouw BV”.

Straatman is well known for its high quality and reliable dredging equipment.

At the factory in The Netherlands, Straatman has in-house design, engineering, production and
testing facilities in order to have full control over the entire production process. This is the main reason

HISTORY

In 1965 we entered the dredging market by developing a steel


plate ball-joint for floating pipe lines in cooperation with dredging
company Bos & Kalis. This company also ordered the first drag
heads.

Through the years we developed our dredging components program


and we now supply products all over the world. With an experience
of more than 45 years of continuous product improvement we meet
the requirements of our customers worldwide and have gained a
reputation of capability and reliability.

One of our best known products is the Bow


Discharge Installation. It is a bow coupling
installation designed for hopper dredgers.
With this installation a quick connection can
be made between the ship and the floating
pipeline. Since 1984 we have delivered
more than 150 bow coupling installations
all over the world.

With our bow discharge installation a quick connection


can be made between the ship and the floating pipe
line.

This installation is designed for efficient beach and land


reclamation. Quick connection and low maintenance
ensure safe working under most all circumstances and
tough weather conditions.

In our period as Van De Graaf we invented the bow


coupling, which became the standard in the world.
We guarantee exchangeability between our systems.

The bow discharge installation consists of the following main parts:

Construction:
n guide ring and gantry construction for integration into the bow section.

Bow coupling:
n female part;
n loose male part with floater for the connection with the floating pipe line.

BOW COUPLING

Construction
The guide ring and gantry construction is fully made of steel plates and is designed to be used
in most circumstances such as bad weather conditions. As we know almost every ship is unique
regarding to the bow shape, our construction is customized to the design of the ship were the
installation has to be build on. The construction is standard provided with:
n discharge pipe (mounted through the gantry) and a cold pressed steel plate bend;
n diabolic sheave with guide on top of the gantry;
n railing around the guide ring
n stairs to guide ring;
n de-aeration valve(s);
n hydraulic tubing (stainless steel) / hoses for the coupling cylinders;
n central lubrication for the diabolic sheave;
n stainless steel hydraulic / grease tubes.

Bow Coupling
The bow coupling realizes the connection between ship and floating pipe line. The coupling
itself consists of a female- and male part. The female part is fixed to the bend of the discharge
pipe and the loose male part has to be mounted to the floating hose. The female part is provided
with hydraulic operated cylinders for opening/closing of the retaining ring and securing the lock
pins. The retaining ring clamps or releases the male part when it is positioned in the female part.
Heavy lock pins secure the retaining ring when the male part is connected. The floater of the male
part is a heavy duty construction and foam filled. The male part of the flexible coupling has an
unlimited rotation.

Options
In addition to our standard design the bow discharge installation can be executed with a wide
range of options:

n rainbow unit (fixed or insert type);


n flange connection between ship and guide ring gantry construction;
n flange connection between discharge pipe and bend;
n casted bend;
n reducing bend for using a smaller bow coupling size;
n reducing ring (adapter / insert) in guide ring for using a smaller bow coupling size;
n wear resistant liners in: discharge pipe, female- and male part;
n hydraulic cylinders with special rod material / coating;
n extra chain guides on female part of the coupling;
n hot dip galvanized railing and stair(s);
n bridle (2-leg chain sling with swivel) for hoisting the male part;
n service frame (stainless steel) for easy inspection of female part;
n in height adjustable diabolo sheave construction;
n specially designed deck foundation for split hopper dredgers.

BALL-JOINTS

Description
In our workshop we fabricate a wide range of ball-joints to connect
floating pipelines and other constructions.
With an experience of more than 45 years and continuous product
development we meet the requirements of our customers worldwide.
Since the introduction of our ball-joint we have gained a worldwide
reputation for strength and reliability.
Our standard ball-joints have a maximum swivel angle of 20°, free
rotating and full nominal passage in the maximum angle position.
The rubber seals are seawater and oil resistant.

Construction
Our complete range of steel plate ball-joints can be delivered in many sizes. The ball-joints are
made of cold deformed steel plates. Because of the cold deformation of the steel the surface
hardness of the material increase. This results in a reliable and solid product, which can be used
in many circumstances.

The ball-joint exists of three main parts: female part, male part and retaining ring. The dismountable
retaining ring locks the male in the female part.

Options
n alternative swivel angle;
n flanges on female and male parts;
n special connection on female and male part for direct welding on pipes;
n (wear resistant) liner in male part and/or female part.

PINCH BALL-JOINTS

PINCH BALL-JOINTS

Description
The great advantage of this ball-joint type is an
easy quick connection / disconnection of a floating
pipeline or hose, mostly used between a floating
pipeline and cutter suction dredger or pontoon. The
female part is positioned on the dredger or pontoon
and male part is connected to the floating pipeline or
hose. Normally the pinch ball-joint can be operated
manually, but the quick release execution can be
equipped with hydraulic cylinders on the female
part for remote control.

Construction
The pinch ball-joint exists of three main parts: female
part, male part and retaining ring. The retaining
ring couples the male part in the female part. The
retaining ring is executed in 2 parts and is hinging in the
female part.

COLD PRESSED BENDS

COLD PRESSED BENDS

Our bends are specially designed for land piping or on


board of dredgers. In our factory we have a hydraulic
press of 1.000 tons to deform steel sheets in the right
shape to produce cold pressed bends. The advantage
of this method is that the hardness of the material will in-
crease, because this deformation is a cold process. This
results in a higher wear resistance. The several pressed
parts are assembled and welded together to one piece.
On request the bends can be provided with flanges.

Material

PIPE PIECES

Dredging pipes operate in severe conditions and have to with-


stand with exceptional wear and tear. As a result, the different
components of the dredging pipeline such as discharge pipes
or trailing pipes need regular maintenance or even replacement.

We can deliver a wide range of pipe components such as:

n straight pipe pieces with bevelled or flanged ends;


n bend pieces;
n hull piping;
n inspection pieces;
n reducers;
n Y- and T-pieces;
n loose flanges.

JET WATER MONITORS

JET WATER MONITORS

Our range of heavy-duty jet water monitors is specially designed


for use on hopper dredgers. After discharging the hopper, the
hopper cargo can be fluidized and removed by this equipment.
Besides that our jet water monitors can be used for support
breaching on a cutter suction dredger.

Rotation / levelling is managed by a hydraulic motor and/or


hydraulic cylinder. Effective jet stream depends on nozzle
diameter and the installed pump capacity.

We manufacture jet water monitors with an inside pipe diameter


from ø 150 – ø 550 mm.
