PROJECT AND PORTFOLIO I ­­

FAV119-O—FILM AND VIDEO

The Project and Portfolio I: Film and Video course


combines hands-on learning experiences with
summative and formative portfolio assessments.
In this course, students will write an outline that
will later be crafted into a short and also create
a trailer for their short. During the process
of creation, the technical basics of cinematic
direction, art direction, sound, and editing will be
woven into the students’ activities. Students will
build an understanding of how cinematic, audio,
and editing principles work together to tell a story.

IN THIS COURSE, STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF SUBJECT
AREAS COVERED IN PRIOR CLASSES WILL BE EVALUATED AND
CONFIRMED

Students will review the material provided in earlier classes and expand their current
skill sets. This will foster an advanced understanding of the materials in preparation
for future portfolio project goals.

To research, compare, and analyze local production industry opportunities for

Students will use a mobile camera, Apple iPad camera, or DSLR camera for some
course assignments. They also have access to a camera on their LaunchBox laptop.

PORTFOLIO STRUCTURE
This course is the first checkpoint of three along students’ central track for the DCBS
program. Assignments in this course will build toward a completed video project,
which students will create by the end of the month. This project will allow students
to practice with the tools they will use in Project and Portfolio II and Project and
Portfolio III.

The assign­ments students have completed in previous courses in preparation for this
portfolio cycle are listed in the table.

Students will refine skills acquired in Visual Storytelling I, including those used in
constructing their Treatment and Storyboard components. In addition, they will be
introduced to the basics of scriptwriting, digital filmmaking, and editing—tools that
will thread into their upcoming Project and Portfolio II course work.

WEEK TWO WEEK FOUR

Rob Scribner is a 2014 graduate of Full Sail’s Digital
Instructional Video Project: AV Script 20% Cinematography program and is currently the owner
and director of photography at Sky Tower Films. Rob
started his career as a director of photography for
Bodybuilding.com, where he worked with people such as
Arnold Schwarzenegger before going on to form his own
WEEK 3 company.
Rob utilized the skills and equipment he acquired at Full
Discussion: AV Script—Peer Critique 10% Sail to produce the short documentary Warbird Pilot:
Behind the Visor, which won the American Society of
Industry Research Workbook 15% Cinematographers’ Gordon Willis Heritage Award for
Best Documentary in 2015. Based on the success of his
documentary, Rob has been selected by Sony to direct and
shoot a series of short films showcasing their new camera,
