Review: Product Law of Exponent (a x ) (ay ) = ax+y

Use the Law of Exponent to simplify the following.
1. (a2)(a3)= a2+3 = a5
2. (2b4)(5b) = 10b4+1 = 10b5
3. (2x)(4x2)(3x5) = 24x1+2+5 =24x8

A. Square of a Binomial
(a + b)2 = (a)(a) + 2(a)(b) + (b)(b) = a2 + 2ab + b2
(a – b)2 = (a)(a) – 2(a)(b) + (b)(b) = a2 – 2ab + b2
Examples:
(a + 2)2 = (a)(a) + 2(a)(2) + (2)(2) = a2 + 4a + 4
(x – y)2 = (x)(x) – 2(x)(y) + (y)(y) = x2 – 2xy + y2

B. Square of a Trinomial
(a + b + c)2 = (a)(a) + (b)(b) + (c)(c) + 2(a)(b) + 2(a)(c) + 2(b)(c) = a2 + b2 + c2 + 2ab + 2ac + 2bc
Example:
(2a + b + 1)2 =(2a)(2a) + (b)(b) + (1)(1) + 2(2a)(b) + 2(2a)(1) + 2(b)(1) = 4a2 + b2 + 1 + 4ab + 4a + 2b

C. Sum and Difference of Two Binomials

(a + b)(a – b) = (a)(a) – (b)(b) = a2 – b2
Examples:
(a + 3)(a – 3) = (a)(a) – (3)(3) = a2 – 9
(2x3 – y)(2x3 + y) = (2x3)( 2x3) – (y)(y) = 4x6 – y2

D. Cube of a Binomial
(a + b)3 = (a)(a)(a) + 3(a)(a)(b) + 3(a)(b)(b) + (b)(b)(b) = a3 + 3a2b + 3ab2 + b3
(a – b)3 = (a)(a)(a) – 3(a)(a)(b) + 3(a)(b)(b) – (b)(b)(b) = a3 – 3a2b + 3ab2 – b3
Examples:
(2a + 1)3 = (2a)(2a)(2a) + 3(2a)(2a)(1) + 3(2a)(1)(1) + (1)(1)(1) = 8a3 + 12a2 + 6a + 1
(x – 2)3 = (x)(x)(x) – 3(x)(x)(2) + 3(x)(2)(2) – (2)(2)(2) = x3 – 6x2 + 12x – 8
