Jasmine Beckles - Lab#10 Food Test

This lab report summarizes an experiment to identify nutrients like starch, proteins, and lipids in foods using common chemical tests. Starch was tested using iodine, which turns blue-black in the presence of starch. Proteins were tested using copper sulfate, which turns violet in the presence of proteins. Lipids were tested by emulsifying oil in water with ethanol. The results showed that each nutrient reacted differently with the test solutions, identifying their presence. The student concluded they successfully identified specific nutrients in foods through these chemical tests.

Title:to determine specific nutrients in food with nutrition.

Aim:To determine specific nutrients in foods

:Apparatus/Materials:

Test tubes

Measuring cylinder

Tweezer

Distilled water

Iodine solution

5% copper sulfate solution

Oil

Ethanol

Procedure:

Starch test:

1) Using a clean test tube add 2cm distilled water to one and starch solution to
the other

2) Add 3 drops of iodine solution to each tube and shake

3) Wait and observe any changes and record findings

Protein test:

1) Using clean test tubes, add 2cm distilled water to one and protein to
the other

2) To each tube add 1cm of sodium hydroxide followed by 4 drops of

5% copper sulfate solution and shake gently to mix

3) Observe and record the initial and final colors of each test tube

Emulsion test:

1) Using clean test tubes, add 2cm distilled water to one and oil to the other

2) To each test tube add 1cm of ethanol and shake vigorously

3) Pour cold distilled water into each test tube

4) Observe and record the initial and final colors in each test tube

Results : table showing food test initial vs final colors

Test Initial color Final color Water

Starch Translucent Blue black Yellow/orange

Protein Blue Violet Light blue

Emulsion Clear White Clear

Discussion :

A biomolecule is a chemical compound found in living organisms and plays an

important role in triggering biochemical reactions in living organisms.

- Starch: is the primary source of energy.

- Protein: provides internal and external support to protect and maintain cell
shape.

- Lipids: the primary functions is storing energy as fat.

In this experiment it is expected that the colors change when reacting with different
solutions. Upon completion of the experiment my assumptions were correct.

Reflection:

I learned that certain foods have particular nutrients which provide benefits for the
organisms that consume it.

Limitations : 1)Transferring of solutions form measuring cylinder to test tube.

The volume of food samples differ in each test tube for the same test.

Precaution:test tubes were wash thoroughly

Sources of Error:stopwatch was not used

Test tubes were shook to vigorously

Conclusion : Inconclusion, I successfully achieved my aim which was determining

specific nutrients in food by various food test.
