Real World
Prefixes and suffixes are an important part of learning vocabulary.

Most standardized tests include words with prefixes and suffixes to test vocabulary.

Activities
Activity 1– Create Organizer

Go over the following definitions and examples while

students create an interactive organizer explaining the
vocabulary words used in this unit.

Activity 2– Review and Introduction of New Prefixes and Suffixes

Note to the Teacher

Over the next four days students will review prefixes and
suffixes they were taught in the lower grades and
introduced to new prefixes and suffixes. Word cards are
available to help with this. Run off the cards onto cardstock.
Students will simply fold each card in half and glue the
inside. The prefix or suffix will be on one side of the card
and its definition will be on the reverse side.

Use these cards in the following ways:

 as response cards to help the students recall the meanings

 Write a base word or root word and have students hold up a prefix or suffix that may
be added to the word. Discuss meanings.

Pockets are available for storing these cards in student organizers.

Four worksheets may be printed for practice.

After copying, cut off the extra around the four sides of the organizer. Have students write key words in the definitions. Next have the students write
examples of each inside the organizer. Fold the right side on the dotted line towards the center. Fold the left side on the dotted line towards the center. Cut
on the solid lines on the right and left sides of the organizer, leaving the middle uncut.
Students will continue to add to their
organizer notebooks. After running off
the prefix and suffix cards, have the
students cut the cards apart, and then
glue the definitions on the back. By
doing so the cards may be used to
build words. The base and root words
do not have definitions as their main
purpose is to promote word building.

Have the students try to use a prefix,

base or root word, and a suffix. See
how many real words can be made.

Prince Horace and Jemmy would often disagree about Jemmy’s behavior during the whipping.
The prince wanted Jemmy to howl, but Jemmy refused to utter a sound.

The Prince would not study the lessons the tutor assigned to him. He left all his textbooks
unread. His books would even grow dusty from their disuse. Jemmy, on the other hand,
would reread the lessons until he learned to read, write, and do sums.
