Ceg612 Week14 Foundation Fai 2022

The document discusses the design of foundations according to Eurocode 7 (EC7). It explains that EC7 specifies two design approaches and sets of partial factors for actions, material properties, and ground resistance. It provides examples of calculating bearing capacity and checking against limit states for shallow foundations and pile foundations. Design of pile foundations involves determining the characteristic compressive resistance from test data and applying partial resistance factors specified in EC7 or national annexes.

DESIGN APPROACH
▪ Design Approach 1 is to be used in Malaysia.

▪ For Design Approach 1 (for retaining walls and

shallow footings), two combinations are available.
▪ Except on occasions where it is obvious that one
combination will govern the design (the combination
of partial factor sets for Design Approach 1 is
different for pile foundations).

DESIGN APPROACH
▪ The sets for actions (denoted by A), material properties (denoted by M) and
ground resistance (denoted by R) for each design approach are given in Table 5.1.
Also given in the table are the partial factors for the EQU limit state.

EUROCODE 7
PILE
FOUNDATION

EC7 - Pile foundations

• Covered in Section 7 of Eurocode 7 Part 1.

• There are 11 limit states listed that should be considered, though only
those limit states most relevant to the particular situation would
normally be considered in the design. These include the loss of overall
stability, bearing resistance failure of the pile, uplift of the pile and
structural failure of the pile.
• We will look only at checking against ground resistance (Rc;d) failure
through the compressive loading (Fc;d) of the pile.

Design approach
• Considering Design Approach 1, the following partial
factor sets are used for the design of axially loaded
piles:

• M1 is used for calculating pile resistance; M2 is used

for calculating unfavourable actions on piles.
• The characteristic value is obtained by one of three
approaches: from i) static load tests, from ii) ground
tests results or from iii) dynamic tests results.

Design resistances

• Equation 6.6 in EN 1990:2002 indicates that the design

resistance depends on material properties and the structural
dimension. However, in geotechnical design, many resistances
depend on the magnitude of the actions and so EN 1997-1
redefines Equation 6.6 to include the contribution made by the
design action. The clause actually offers three methods of
establishing the design resistance, Rd:

Annex B of Eurocode 7 Part 1 offers guidance on which of

the 3 formulae above to use for each design approach
