BA 211 Exercise 4

BG Company received contracts to supply gravel for 3 road projects. They have 3 gravel plants that can supply the projects. The document asks to minimize total transportation costs by scheduling shipments optimally from each plant to each project. Three power plants supply electricity to 3 cities. The document asks to find the most economical distribution plan initially, and then to determine the plan if demand increases 20% and additional electricity must be purchased. Four automobiles need repair work by 4 mechanics. The document asks to assign each mechanic one job to minimize total time to complete all jobs.

BA 211

Exercise 4
1. BG Company received a contract to supply gravel for 3 new road projects located in the towns of
Greenville, Fountain and Ayden. Construction engineers have estimated the amounts of gravel
which will be needed at the 3 road construction projects:

Greenville Fountain Ayden

Weekly requirements 72 102 41
(truckloads)

The company has 3 gravel plants located in the towns of Kinston, Wilson and Bethel. The gravel
required for the construction projects can be supplied by these 3 plants. BG’s chief dispatcher has
calculated the amounts of gravel which can be supplied by each plant:

Kinston Wilson Bethel

Amount available per week 56 82 77
(truckloads)

The delivery costs from each plant to each project site as computed by the company are given
below:
Cost per truckload ($)
From\To Greenville Fountain Ayden
Kinston 4 8 8
Wilson 16 24 16
Bethel 8 16 24

Given the amounts required at each project and the amounts available at each plant, how should
the company schedule the shipments from each plant to each project so that the total transportation
cost is minimized.

2. Three electric power plants with capacities of 20, 40, and 30 million kwh supply electricity to three
cities. The demands at the three cities are estimated at 40, 25, and 25 million kwh. The price (in
thousands of dollars) per million kwh at the three cities is given in the table below:

Plant\City 1 2 3
1 6 7 4
2 2 2 4
3 5 5 3

a) Find the most economical plan for the distribution of electricity to the three cities.
b) During the month of July, there is a 20% increase in demand at each of the three cities which
can be met by purchasing electricity from another network at a premium rate of $1000 per
million kwh. Determine the most economical plan for the distribution and purchase of
additional energy for the month of July.
3.
4. Four automobiles have entered a repair shop for various types of work, ranging from transmission
overhaul to a brake job. The estimated times (in minutes) for each mechanic to complete each of
the four jobs are given as follows: Billy can finish job 1 in 400 minutes, job 2 in 90 minutes, job 3
in 60 minutes, and job 4 in 120 minutes; Taylor can finish job 1 in 650 minutes, job 2 in 120
minutes, job 3 in 90 minutes, and job 4 in 180 minutes; Mark can finish job 1 in 480 minutes, job
2 in 120 minutes, job 3 in 80 minutes, and job 4 in 180 minutes; John can finish job 1 in 500
minutes, job 2 in 110 minutes, job 3 in 90 minutes, and job 4 in 150 minutes. Each mechanic should
be assigned to just one of these jobs. What is the minimum total time required to finish the four
jobs? Who should be assigned to each job?

5. ABC accounting firm is considering three of its employees as project leaders to be assigned to its
three new clients. Based on their different backgrounds and experiences, the various leader-client
assignments differ in terms of projected completion times. The possible assignments and the
estimated completion times in days are as follows:
Client
Project Leader 1 2 3
Arthur 10 16 32
Boris 14 22 40
Celine 22 24 34

If the objective is to minimize the total completion time for all the three clients, to which client
should each project leader be assigned?

a) Find the optimal leader-client assignments using the Hungarian method. What is the minimum
total project completion time?
b) Suppose another employee, David, is available to be a project leader and can complete the
projects for clients 1, 2 and 3 in 14, 18 and 36 days, respectively. If each of the four employees
can be assigned to at most one client, who among them should be assigned and to which client?
Was there any savings associated with considering David as a possible project leader?

6. The chairman of the business department will be scheduling faculty to teach the four core courses
for the next term. The four courses are at the UG, MBA, MS, and Ph.D. levels. Four professors will
be assigned to the courses, with each professor receiving one of the courses. Student evaluations of
professors are available from previous terms. Based on a rating scale of 4 (excellent), 3 (very good),
2 (average), 1 (fair), and 0 (poor), the average student evaluations for each professor are shown
below.

Professor UG MBA MS Ph.D.

A 2.8 2.2 3.3 3.0
B 3.2 3.0 3.6 3.6
C 3.3 3.2 3.5 3.5
D 3.2 2.8 2.5 -

Professor D does not have a Ph.D. and cannot be assigned to teach the Ph.D. level course. If
the department chair makes teaching assignments based on maximizing the student evaluation
ratings over all four courses, what staffing assignments should be made?
