The first paragraph should be short and it must state the purpose of the
letter- to make an enquiry, complain, request something, etc.

The Reason for Writing

Use the first or second sentence to make the reason for writing the letter clear
to the person who will read it. Stating your name in this segment of the letter is
unnecessary. A good way to begin the letter is I am writing + to + verb

must cover all three bullet points in the question, or lose marks.

The paragraph or paragraphs in the middle of the letter should contain the
relevant information behind the writing of the letter. Most letters in English are
not very long, so keep the information to the essentials and concentrate on
organizing it in a clear and logical manner rather than expanding too much.

General Rule: no opinion for writing task 1, no analysis, no interpretation, limited to descriptions
WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU WRITE, NOTHING MORE

INTRODUCTION:
 paraphrase (express same idea using your own words) task description (located either at the top

 1-2 sentences
 present tense
 no statistical figures yet, present them in the specific details

Paraphrased introduction: The line graph presents the monthly income of 3 car companies based in
Britain namely Acme Sports Cars, Branson Motors and Curtis Car Mart in the fiscal year 2000.

OVERVIEW:
No overview? Immediate 4 for Task Achievement.
 Is the most important part of writing task 1 as this shows that the examinee clearly understands
the information on the table/graph
 overall trend (increase/decrease) of the graphs for static
for statics, key features that have to be stated are data sets with the highest and lowest
value and when possible the general trend that can be deduced from the graph (general trend
can be deduced by simply looking at the initial and final value and ascertaining whether it is
increasing, decreasing, fluctuating or constant [no significant changes])
 overall observation for processes
for processes, key features include stating the first and last step in a flowchart or cycle
and the number of steps. Also, preferably, to improve the overall observation, a generalization
regarding the steps can be included
 1-2 sentences
 with time element, past tense
 without time element, present tense
 no statistical figures
Example:
 static: Overall, the unemployment rate in USA went down while that of Japan increased from
March 1993 to March 1999. There was an opposing trend for these two countries included in
the study.
 process: After 13 weeks and a series of physical changes, the frog reaches its stage of maturity.
Once it reaches adult stage, the cycle begins anew.

SPECIFIC DETAILS:
 1 graph- 1 paragraph
 with time element, past tense
 without time element, present tense
- Present-present-present (Chocolate bar, page 1)
- Present-past-past (World Population, page 3)
 It is recommended that you don’t start a sentence with a number or a percent:
example:
wrong: 4% of the price of a chocolate bar goes to the farmers.
better: The farmers receive 4% of the price of a chocolate bar.
 Better to use % for digits, use percent for words (4%, four percent; 10 and up - numerical- 10;
9 and below- either word or number- nine, 9)
 if it is your first time to use %/#, make sure to label (54% of world population; 120,000 visitors)
 write big numbers and years in digits and not in words (write 28,000 instead of twenty eight
thousand; write 1995 instead of nineteen ninety five)

WRITING TASK 2 MODEL ESSAYS

The best way to solve the world’s environmental problem is to increase the cost of fuel.
To what extent do you AGREE OR DISAGREE with this statement? (9.0 IN WRITING)

As globalization continues and the world heads into the future, the Earth’s natural processes are
altered, leading to major environmental challenges. With the assumption that fuel consumption
greatly affects ecological balance, certain conservation groups propose to make petrol more
expensive to solve the world’s environmental problems. While this is a valid suggestion, it is my
belief that this approach cannot address all of the environmental concerns of the world.

It is probably true to say that many motorists would be discouraged to use cars excessively when
the price of oil is increased. This move may potentially reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and
harmful pollutants into the air, which would result in the reduction of global warming and air
pollution. However, doing so clearly does not help with issues that do not emanate from the use of
fuel, such as water pollution, improper waste management and severe deforestation.

Another point to consider is the social structure and culture of people in certain countries. In
developing nations, for instance, the great majority of the individuals who own cars belong to the
rich and privileged. Although an increase in the cost of petrol would initially hurt, it would not keep
them from using cars for long as they can easily afford the price of fuel no matter how expensive.

I also believe that this measure is at best temporary because it focuses more on governmental
policy than individual responsibility. Since most of the world’s environmental problems result from
the inconsiderate actions of man, none of these issues would be permanently resolved unless
people would learn how to live in a way that is greener and friendlier to the environment.

To my mind, increasing the cost of fuel is but a short-term relief to the world’s environmental
problems. Raising the individual concern for the environment would be a better and more lasting
solution. – BRIAN MARTIN SIOSON, LECTURER OF MAJOR BRANCHES

Eating at restaurants is convenient for many people. But some prefer eating at home because it
is much cheaper. DISCUSS BOTH VIEWS and give your opinion.

Eating is not just a physiological need, but a way for a person to relax and enjoy life through the
many flavors sampled from various dishes. The decision then as to where such satisfaction could be
achieved is divided among those who opt to dine in restaurants, or some who would choose to
enjoy their meals in the comforts of their own home.

Dining in restaurants is truly beneficial for those who cannot cook because of lack of time or the
inability to do so. Precious time is not wasted in buying ingredients, preparing the dish itself, or
worse, cleaning the plates right after. Eating out also saves individuals who know very little about
cooking from the burden of experimenting, only to fail, sending their money and effort down the
drain. As someone who has never been gifted with the talent of cooking, I would rather spend the

few hours of my day savoring a meal with my loved ones in our favorite restaurant rather than
running around like a headless chicken just trying to create a decent dish.

Nevertheless, eating at home is more pragmatic and beneficial to the lives of people. Because of the
rising cost of commodities nowadays, it is more practical to just prepare one's own meal at home.
Persons get to budget their money and wisely spend it on fresh and nutritious ingredients of the
meals they are going to cook. As a nurse who does not earn much, not only do I get to avoid paying
additional taxes and charges on my family's food, but I also get to help my mother meticulously
measure and control the amount of fat or salt in the dish she is whipping up to come up with an
affordable but healthy meal for our family.

Though there are those who prefer home-cooked meals for health and practical reasons, I am one of
those who favor dining in restaurants as it saves me from the anxiety of making dishes for my
family and I would never sacrifice comfort and variety whenever the opportunity to eat is given.

OPEN ENDED: Travelling is a popular activity today. Do you like travelling? What mode of
transport do you prefer to use? Do you think there will still be improvements in the future?

In the fast-paced life that most people are living in today, most workers desire to allot some of their
time doing the activities that they enjoy. One of the pastimes that someone can do for recreation is
to visit new places. With the inventions today, voyaging has never been this cosy. There are various
forms of transportation that can be used to provide safe and accessible journey with a touch of
comfort.

I am one of the people who take pleasure from travelling. For me, this is a chance to experience
exciting activities and to learn more about the world. It enables me to see things in a new
perspective as I meet people from a different culture. This releases me from the boredom of my
daily routine. Coming from a nation with a lot of tourist destinations that are worth visiting, moving
from one coast to another is never a mundane task.

Despite the thrill that tours offer, the rewarding feeling can be killed if a traveller will not be wary
of the mode of transport that will be used. Here in the Philippines, there is a wide array of vehicles,
public or private, that can be utilized depending on one’s preference. Personally, I would rather ride
a train as it allows me to arrive in my destination faster than most public transport. I also see this
manner of commuting safer, although not 100% because there may also be thieves on-board, as
compared to jeepneys and buses where robbery often takes place.

I believe that advancement in the field of transportation and comfortable travel is still possible to
happen, but not in the near future. This is primarily because most public officials elected today are
corrupt. Refinement will only be achieved if they stop using the public funds for their own benefit
and focus on implementing the legislations and build better roads for the commuters to use.

At the end of the day, I will still opt to travel, most likely by boarding a train, to release the stress I
encounter in life no matter how challenging it may be. However, I am not closing my doors for
positive changes and I still have high hopes that the government can someday concentrate on the
improvements needed in the transportation sector. - MATHIE LAVINA OF NINER PASIG

DO THE ADVANTAGES OUTWEIGH THE DISADVANTAGES: International tourism has contributed

both positive and negative effects to the local community. Do you think the advantages of
international tourism outweigh the disadvantages?

Exploring uncharted territories satisfies a man's need for self-actualization. This has catapulted an
avalanche of tourists itching to book their next holiday destination; from a group of backpackers to
a wandering soul as portrayed in the movie Eat, Pray, Love. Nomadic lifestyle has become the new
black at the turn of the 21st century. The local community, being at the heart of the matter,
experiences both pros and cons from this emerging global tourism. I am a proponent that this
constitutes large-scale developments starting from the grassroots.

As a traveler prepares his itinerary, researching about the customs of the locals would be the last
item in his checklist as he would mostly be anticipating on Instagram-worthy tourist spots and
must-try restaurants. This ignorance might turn into a disrespectful behavior which can slight the
inhabitants. Dubai has positioned itself as a vacation hotspot yet there is an ongoing friction
between the local Arabs and tourists, one of which is when the latter do not observe modest
clothing. The onset of socio-cultural disparity remains a conundrum.

Nevertheless, the potential to uplift the quality of life of the members of a community is
unequivocal. Social interaction is the great human spirit. Moreover, capitalizing and being
patronized on what they can offer provide a gratifying experience. These develop positive morale
and a sense of pride which become a catalyst for them to be ingenious in showcasing their local
products and services. As a result, this platform generates a sustainable livelihood. Boracay was
awarded by Condè Nast Traveler 2016 as the best island in the world not only because of its
pristine waters but also due to its thriving nightlife and other attractions. It is the quintessence of
how a humble island reaps the benefits of international tourism.

As more foreigners flock in a particular area, it also encourages homogeneous ideologies in the long
run. This is healthy for the collective psyche of the native people as they learn the value of diversity
and sharing common interests which define an ideal society. This produces a melting pot where
individuals regardless of their background can co-exist. This attribute is exemplified by Malaysia as
a key factor for its economic growth.

A community will continue to flourish if it leverages its resources in the global arena especially in
the tourism sector. The holistic merits empower it to be adaptable to the changing times. –
