Or Alarms To Warn The User: Method 1

1. The first method for assessing safe water involves leaving the Safety Contour displayed and visually assessing the chart to determine the amount of safe water available. Care must be taken to ensure all potential dangers are shown. 2. It is recommended to manually update the safety check against the given date/time and predicted tide height. This should be reviewed and signed off in the voyage plan. 3. Hazards of this method include the automated route check only warning at the Safety Contour with no further indication if planned in shallower waters, and the guard zone only alarming at the Safety Contour with no additional alarms in shallower waters. There is also a risk of missing a danger during visual inspection with no

The first method is to leave the Safety Contour as displayed and make a visual assessment of t
he
chart as to the amount of actual safe water available. То do this safely, care will be needed t

ensure that suitable display settings are enabled so that all  possible dangers are shown. Some

systems may not Show dangers in the area shallower than the Safety Contour in certain displ
ay
modes. as explained in Nl’23l. The entered safety depth will indicate aII  soundings which are
equal to or less than the safety depth in black text, this will assist in visualising the actual s
afe
water. All soundings greater than the safety depth will appear as grey text.
lt is recommended that a manual update is applied to indicate the safety check against a give
n date/
time and predicted height of tide. This should be carefully noted at the review stage and signed
off

in the voyage Plan.
The hazards associated with this method are:
l.  The user will need to  be aware that the automated route cheek will display a Warning for
crossing the Safety Contour but possibly no further indication ifthc route is planned into wate
rs
shallower than the entered Safety Contour
Similarly during monitoring of the voyage, the guard zone will activate an audible alarm when
it encounters the Safety Contour and possibly not activate any further alarms once the vessel
moves into water that is shallower than the Safety Contour entered
3.  A danger could be missed during the visual inspection ofthe ENC with no electronic warnings

or alarms to warn the user
4.  As the Safety Contour alarm will be activated but disregarded, a culture of “the Safety Con
tour
doesn’t really matter"  may develop and lead to the Safety Contour indication during pla
nning,
or alarm during monitoring, being dismissed as not important at any time

Procedure for crossing the Safety Contour
Method 1:
a. Calculate safety depth and enter into ECDIS

features and contours to be displayed. Ensure all obstructions and potential hazards
are displayed (Safest is to use Display = “ALL”)
c. Review area within the Safety Contour to identify areas greater than safety depth to
determine that planned leg remains in safe water
d. Add Mariner’s Note to show area that may be crossed at appropriate height of tide
with time and date for planned crossing
