Pi Network: Scam or Legal? 

 
Nowadays a lot of people are sharing a circulated message on the social-media to become a 
member of Pi Network Cryptocurrency using the referral userid. First of all we have to 
understand what this is all about before making a decision. 
 

What is Pi and their Claim? 

A common narrative about, PI; a cryptocurrency which claims to download their mobile app and 
start mobile mining. This looks simple 1 2 3 and you're a billionaire but it's not true. 
 
Pi Network is building a peer-to-peer marketplace where our members will be able to directly 
spend Pi to buy goods and services. 
 
Pi claims that: 
● Its aim to start experimenting with in-app transfers of Pi as soon as Q4 2019 
● Exchanging Pi for fiat currency on cryptocurrency exchanges. 

What is Mobile Mining? 

In short, Mobile mining is a process where you’re using your device and you are being rewarded 
for the mining process happening in your background of the application. Mobile mining is only 
possible in an OS like android for mobile devices which runs on the Android. But you don’t have 
to forget a point which is equally important that smartphones aren't powerful enough to be 
operated for cryptocurrency mining. The miners use a very complex and power consuming 
software solution which takes a lot of power as an input and operates on the required task.

So replicating it on a regular smartphone with a good spec won’t be workable. If for-sake it's 
workable but for a very short time as it won’t be able to make up with the computations for 
many other reasons. 
 
As per the cryptocurrency mining rules the validations for the transactions on the blockchain by 
solving the complex mathematical problems is a process which uses the entire computer 
processors energy in with reference to GPUs. 
 
Wrapping up this talk in simple words, cryptocurrency mobile mining isn’t complicated. All you 
need is a powerful smartphone and the app for the mining that runs in the background and you 
do your regular work and in response you earn a reward. 
 
But don’t forget that your performance and battery drainage will get you damaging the device. 

Is Mobile Mining Apps legally available on the 

official stores? 
IOS = “Apps, including any third-party advertisements displayed within them, may not run 
unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining… Apps may not mine for 
cryptocurrencies unless the processing is performed off device (e.g. cloud-based mining).” — 
Apple Store Developer Guidelines June 2018​. 
 
Android = “We don’t allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices. We permit apps that 
remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency.” —​ Android Developer Policy July 2018​. 

Is PI valuable? 
PI network is working on a MLM strategy and that strategy really works in reality as its more 
over associated with the psychological human behaviour. 
 
During working and reading a lot about the PI on the internet we didn’t found anyone getting 
valuable outcome or reward except the owners/founders of the application of PI Network. 
 
What we found is as stated below: 
1. The app isn’t providing any real doing or happening to the user who signs up. It's a hope 
that users on the network can generate referral coins value and convert to real money 
later in future if hopes become positive. 
2. As stated already its a MLM based system or app which promises for a reward but in 
reality it's just adding up new users.

 3. Many people are saying its not illegal or scam or hoax because we aren’t putting in real 
cash. We’re just downloading and performing referrals. Well yes we agree to this point 
but the big game and big cash is the data you’re putting in the application. You know 
what they are collecting? I am sure you won’t ever thought about it by just accepting and 
in a greed of getting cryptos you’re doing and referring to the app. 
 
 
The application Pi Network by SocialChain the developer for this app are doing the following: 
 
● Storage: 
○ read the contents of your USB storage 
○ modify or delete the contents of your USB storage 
● Photos/Media/Files: 
○ read the contents of your USB storage 
○ modify or delete the contents of your USB storage 
● Phone: 
○ read phone status and identity 
● Wi-Fi connection information: 
○ view Wi-Fi connections 
● Device ID & call information: 
○ read phone status and identity 
● Contacts: 
○ read your contacts 
● Other:  
○ receive data from Internet 
○ view network connections 
○ full network access 
○ prevent device from sleeping 
○ control vibration 
○ run at startup 
○ draw over other apps 
 
Now I am sure you're thinking I am joking or I am against all this etc etc. Seriously not. If you 
haven’t read or followed the GDPR Compliances then that is something you should raise your 
voice as being Pakistani. We need our digital rights as a Pakistani and in Pakistan, why is that 
outside companies take my digital identity? 
 
So yes these are true and no worries you can just uninstall and delete the app or may report if 
you feel now. While the details can be easily found in detail on the official application page of 
Google App Pi Network​.

 4. We also found that the app isn’t creating any real reward or value to the system or 
ecosystem of the crypto currency. 
5. We didn’t find any useful information which could lead us to the information that it's 
based on blockchain technology or not as most blockchain companies publish their 
code as open source. 
6. As claimed earlier the big benefit is to the founders and stakeholders who’re getting 
benefitted by the FREE information and accurate data they’re receiving from the user like 
you; if you signed up though. 
7. The company launched a video ads to monetize the users and also they have a KYC 
process for collecting passport information binding this to your mobile ids can be 
valuable for them. 
8. This app if seen from academic context, yes we can say the founders used the 
blockchain or cryptocurrency mining app terminologies to implement a MLM technique 
to acquire data of users across the globe as the GDPR compliance can’t be seen 
implemented on this app and that is the case the Google App haven’t removed the app 
from the PlayStore, yet on 28th January 2021 02:22 PM PKT, while we are writing this 
document. 
9. The biggest concern we found in findings is that the traffic packets used in the sending 
of network traffic on the application is via ​socialchain.app, a
​ nd ​rayjump.com​. This was a 
point that raised and confirmed our points that there is some other hidden activity been 
performed related to manipulation or processing of the data. 
 
For us what we think after all this: 
Performing a hidden agenda work from the user data to generate revenue by using blockchain 
scam without blockchain infrastructure.
