Guidance and counseling are important for students' development and well-being. Through counseling, students learn how to manage emotions and problems. Counseling also provides career guidance to help students choose courses and future careers. Some benefits of guidance and counseling include helping students deal with psychological issues, cope with school situations, shape behavior, and make informed career choices. It also allows them to discuss personal issues and get advice on topics like drugs and abuse. Overall, guidance is a lifelong process that helps individuals solve problems by providing support and opportunities for self-knowledge and adjustment. While education brings broader development, guidance specifically focuses on understanding and supporting each individual learner.

Student's Life
Guidance and counselling are important for children, and
schools have a huge role in bringing out the best in
children. Good conduct is coveted, but sometimes young
minds need guidance to polish their personality. Through
counselling, children are given advice on how to manage
and deal with emotional conflict and personal problems.
Proper counselling will help incorporate valuable lessons
in their daily life. Some sessions should involve career
guidance, where the students are advised on the selection
of courses and different career paths. It's important to
prepare them for life after school and what to expect in the
different fields they might opt for.
Following are some of the benefits that students
get from effective guidance & counselling:

1. Students are given proper guidance on how to deal with

psychological problems which can badly impact their
studies. Through these sessions, the students will be able
to develop certain problem-solving skills which to an
extent help them deal with particular issues surrounding
their lives.

2. The students are advised on how to cope with different

situations they tend to face in their school life. For
peers. This advice will give them perspective on how should
they behave in certain scenarios.

3. It helps to shape a student's behavior and also instill

enough discipline in them. Proper guidance helps them
achieve their goals, well guided & counselled students know
what to do and how to do things in the best possible way.

4. Students learn how to live in peace and harmony with

others in the school community. Thereby, they also learn to
appreciate other people in their class.
5. It helps to bridge the gap between students and the
school administration, since they are able to guide their
problems through a proper counselling channel in the office.
6. Students get comprehensive advice on career, courses
and jobs that enable them to make a proper and informed
choice and understand what they can do after they are done
with school.

7. It allows students to talk to teachers about various

experiences that make them uncomfortable. They can
openly share problems that they cannot share with their
parents.
8. Talks related to alcohol, drugs, personal feelings or any
kind of abuse, can be openly discussed. Guidance and
counselling also make students better human beings since
they are counselled on how to act and behave in a particular
situation.
9. It enables students undergoing certain difficulties in their
lives, to ask questions and clarify them through guiding and
counselling. Therefore, counselling helps them ask without
any fear since the person in charge is willing to help.

GUIDANCE is a process which is a life-long one. Generally,

it works whenever a child, an adolescent, or an adult is
helped in any way by another person so that a problem can
be solved, a behavior can be improved or a better decision
can be arrived at. This leads one to make, better adjustments
in the home, school, neighborhood or in the society where he
belongs.
According to Jones, Guidance does not solve the problems
for an individual, rather, it helps the individual solve his
problems. This is made possible by making available to the
individual all possible means, opportunities, avenues of value
to him. As a result there is a change of behavior for the
better, because the process takes place within the individual.
There is an increased awareness in him which results to self
knowledge, self-appraisal, and self-understanding.

How is “Education” distinguished from “Guidance” ?

Education deals with the entire scope of human
development. They are in the aspects of mental, physical,
social, emotional, spiritual and vocational concerns. The
primary aim of society is to develop the individual so that he
can make a healthy adjustment in the society where he lives. When
society merely determines what must be learned in terms of
knowledge, skill and attitudes, education is involved. Society in general
and the school in particular may need to influence or direct the growth
of the individual to meet societal needs. Demands for computer skills
are part of modern technology. This is good education. The process by
which education is formed in the early years of the child is considered
developmental guidance.

“All Guidance is Education but not all aspect of Education

are Guidance. “ It is only when the cooperation of the
individual is secured and assistance is given to him in
meeting his goals that guidance is present. A separation of
the two is impossible. When the individual attempted
consciously to reach a goal without help, guidance is not
present.
Ryan and Zeran further elaborate the distinction between the two.
According to them education is a process which functions for the
purpose of bringing about changes in behaviors of learners in desirable
directions. These changes are reflected in acquisition of new
knowledge or modification of existing knowledge, development of new
skills development attitudes, feelings and values to enhance the
healthy growth and development of the individual. This enables the
learners to contribute to the well-being of the society of which he is
part.
Guidance on the other hand serves as supporting function by
understanding the learner. It directs and controls activities to help
each individual develop to his fullest potential or the person he is
capable of becoming.
The goals of education which are implemented in a guidance
program and which consist of a set of basic services in a school sitting
are intended to insure that each learner will receive an education to fit
him for career objectives which are in accordance with his abilities,
interests, in line with occupational opportunities in the foreseeable
future. The guidance program also serves to assist each individual
become a fully functioning person, that who is capable of maintaining a
healthy social relationship with others, and performing as a responsible
citizen of the community, who becomes capable of being a part of the
larger society.
