Section 01
Introduction
This TRAINING MANUAL of the Earthing & Lightning Protection system installed at
the project (AD Port Project 4201-230) DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION OF BOROUGE
PERMANENT WAREHOUSES in KIZAD is for the safe and reliable operation and
maintenance.

The training covers;

 The safe Inspection & Maintenance procedures of the Earthing & Lightning Protection
system

The Earthing & Lightning Protection system are installed by

The scope of this section about the Earthing and Lighting Protection System in Borouge
Permanent warehouses. Earthing and Lighting Protection System are designed and installed in
accordance with the requirements of BS EN 62305 and comply with British Standards and
Codes of Practice and the particular requirements of the local supply authority i.e. ADDC,
ADWEA etc. All earthing & lightning protection components are tested and certified
compliant with BS EN 50164-1 and BS EN 50164-2.
EARTHNG SYSTEM
The Earthing system is TN-S-TT type as per the RSB Electricity Wiring
Regulations. All metallic work, which may provide a path to earth such as
components of hot and cold water systems, pipe work systems, metallic waste
pipes, stainless steel units, metallic structure & grids, cable tray, trunking &
containment etc. are effectively bonded to the electrical earthing system as per
requirements of BS 7671 and BS 951.
LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM
Lightning protection system of the warehouses and buildings consist of air terminal
networks, down conductors, earthing networks, bonding to all metallic structural
works, all related accessories, and terminations and connection to earth pit. In the
warehouses, the structural I columns of the warehouses are used as down conductor

Safety Instruction
The component of Earthing & Lightning Protection system must be installed and
serviced by authorized / experienced personal qualified in electrical installation and
maintenance.
RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK OR ELECTRICUTION
The installation & maintenance by a licensed/certified competent technician in
accordance with the ADDC rules and regulation. Improper installation will create an
electrical hazard which could result in death (or) serious injury, for installers (or)
others, due to electrical shock and may also cause damage to property.

PART THEREOF UNLESS QUALIFIED AND AUTHORISED.

DO NOT OPEN OR TOUCH ANY LIVE ELECTRICAL SWITCHBOARD OR ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENT UNLESS QUALIFIED AND AUTHORISED

WARNING
DO NOT TURN OFF ELECTRIC MOTORS ONLY AT THE POWER ISOLATING SWITCH.
ALWAYS USE THE CONTROL ISOLATOR AND THEN ISOLATE AT THE MOTOR
ISOLATOR.

WARNING
DO NOT MODIFY OR ALTER ANY PART OF THE CONTROL CIRCUIT WITHOUT
AUTHORISATION.

Section 04
Training Module
Ensure that all staff, technicians and workers performing any repairs,
replacements or maintenance are adequately trained in the technical and safety
aspects of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing or fire protection equipment and
systems prior to allowing the works to commence.
Further Information and additional instructions for a complete understanding of
the operation and maintenance characteristics of the building services are given in
the Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
All staff, technicians and workers must undergo a site induction to identify the site
working conditions, site environment, site safety requirements and site
orientation for emergency evacuations.
Section 05
System
Description
The Earthing & Lightning Protection system in the Borouge Permanent warehouses and
its subsidiary buildings complies with the ADDC and BS standards.

The Earthing & Lightning Protection system consists of the following:

 Roof LPS Mesh


 Air Terminal
 Down conductor
 Earth Rod
 Earth pit etc.…

Operation
Procedures
The Earthing & Lightning Protection system is a standstill/Passive system, hence operation is
not applicable.

A regular inspection and record keeping of the status of the system is necessary to ensure that
Earthing & Lightning Protection system does not deteriorate but continues to fulfill the
requirements to which it was originally designed and installed.
Section 07
Maintenance
Procedures
A well-planned maintenance program is essential to the efficient operation of the
wiring and lighting system. Maintenance to the should be executed by the
experienced technician and as per the manufacturers’ recommendations.

A maintenance program should contain a list of routine items to serve as a checklist so


that definite maintenance procedures are followed regularly in order to make it
possible to compare recent results with previous ones.
A maintenance program should contain provisions for the following:
– Verification of all LPS conductors and system components;
– Verification of the electrical continuity of the LPS installation;
– Measurement of the resistance to earth of the earth termination system;
– Verification of SPDs;
– Re-fastening of components and conductors;
– Verification to ensure the effectiveness of the LPS has not been reduced
after additions to, or changes in, the structure and its installations.
The mechanical and electrical characteristics of the LPS should be fully
maintained throughout the entire lifetime of the LPS in order to conform to
the requirements.

Tools, Equipment & Safety:

 All tools and equipment should be kept clean and in good condition. They
should be regularly inspected and any signs, which show excessive, wear or
defect, should be replaced immediately.
 The following are a few notes on the use of tools and equipment:
 Only use each tool for purpose of which it was designed
 Never leave tools lying about. Collect them when finished and return them to
correction location
 Use Calibrated instruments
