WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

We all know that reading comprehension is a viable skill to develop to

improve communication.

All other skills like writing and speaking greatly affect what you gain in reading.

One relevant skill you need to develop the skill for reading is connecting the dots
or making connections on what you read.

In this lesson, you will learn how to make connections between texts and particular
issues or experiences, concerns, and dispositions you are or the people around you are
experiencing in life.

Are you fond of reading books, graphic novels, e-books, manga’s, web novels or
webtoons? If yes, how do you feel as you were reading the stories? Did you feel sadness?
fear? hate? love? How do these emotions happen?

This happens by making connections!

Notice that your previous experiences, knowledge, emotions, and understanding

of things affect what and how you learn.

Learning to understand this can help you make connections to the reading text and
the concepts it wants to convey.

One simple way to make connections is to understand the words you are reading
in the text. Words and diction are important in reading. writers spend a lot of time putting
into writing the right and exact words so there will be no confusion with the things want to
say.

A Philippine tradition believes that one should be buried in his or her hometown
where most of his or her relatives are. Otherwise, one’s soul will not be at rest.
3
Keyword for reading:

PATRIOTISM - love of one’s country

Underscore a motive for reading:

Do many people still believe in this?

How does the soldier in the text feel about the possibility of being buried in
a foreign country?

Activity 1. MATCHY-MATCHY
Directions: Using your dictionary, unlock the meaning of the underlined words. Match
Column A with Column B. Choose the letter of your answer and write it in the space
provided.

A B

____1. a richer dust concealed A. To wander or travel freely without a specific

destination

____2. all evil shed away B. To hide something; to try to keep something
secret

____3. her ways to roam C. To part with, separate from; be divested of

____4. eternal mind D. To make something holy

____5. blest by sun of home E. Lasting forever; unending

F. To stay in one place

4
WHAT IS IT
Making connections is a critical reading comprehension strategy that
helps you make meaning and understand what you are reading. When you make
connections to a given text, it helps you make sense of what you are reading by using
your schema and metacognition. Schema and metacognition are a cognitive framework
or concept that helps organize and interpret information. Schemas can be useful because
they allow us to take shortcuts in interpreting the vast amount of information that is
available in our environment. By using this, you retain information better and engage more
with the words you are reading.

3 Types of Connections

Text-to-self Connections

● Text-to-self connections are personal connections that you make between

yourself and the selection you are reading. These connections activate your
experiences, emotions, or opinions. While reading, you might think that your
experiences, opinions, or emotions may be similar to the text or texts you
are reading.
● Text-to-self connections simply mean you relate information and insights
from the text to your personal experiences.

Text-to-text connections

● Text-to-text connections are connections where you relate one material to

another that you have read or come across before. Texts might be from a
similar author, theme, genre, and the like.
● This simply means that you are relating one thing to another. you are
relating one text to another text.

Text-to-world connections

● Text-to-world connections are the larger connections that you as a reader

bring to a reading situation including your perception of the world. These

5
connections usually vary every reader has their own perception of the world
based on different personal experiences.
● To simply put it, text-to-world connections are relating what you are reading
to the things that are happening and relevant to the world around you such
as social issues, real-life situations, and events around us.

Activity 1. How do you feel?

Directions: Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.

The Soldier

By: Rupert Brooke

If I should die, think only this of me:

That there’s some corner of a foreign field

That is forever England. There shall be

In that rich earth a richer dust concealed.

A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,

Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam;

A body of England’s, breathing English air,

Washed by the rivers, bels by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,

A pulse in the eternal mind, no less

Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;

Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;

And laughter learn of friends; and gentleness,

In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

WHAT’S MORE

A community is a group of living things sharing the same environment. They

usually have shared interests. In human communities, people have some of the same
beliefs and needs, and this affects the identity of the group and the people in it. It is a

geographical area (e.g., a country, village, town, or neighborhood) or in virtual space
through communication platforms.

Different Types of Communities:

Interest - Communities of people who share the same interest or passion.

Action - Communities of people trying to bring about change.

will be best for us.
Life gets harder for people who do not dream of making it a little better. Keep
reaching for your dreams; keep reaching for your goals which you created with your
heart and soul. And every time you fail, hold on to it tightly; never let it go. It may get
harder every day but every step you put forward is a great leap towards triumph. After
all, chances are, the life you try to define is just right there at the corner.

OLD VENDOR SURPRISED ON BEING GIVEN A BIKE

June 4, 2021
By Patrick Garcia

A video of an elderly man and a bike shop owner Wednesday (June 3) is touching
the hearts of many as it proved that despite the threat of Covid-19, there are still people
willing to help others in this time of crisis.

14
According to Juhdel Pagador the staff of Carandang Bike shop in Pasay City and
the uploader of the video, the elderly man, Carlos Samonte, had been visiting the shop
every day for almost a week asking if there were any
bikes available to purchase. When the shop finally had
an available stock of mini mountain bikes, Samonte
asked if he could buy one for P2,000.00 as the only
money he had. The amount was less than it’s the original
price of P4,500.00.
But after he’d been back to the shop several times to look at the bike, the shop’s
owner, Fe Carandang, agreed to give the bike to Samonte for free and even gave him a
bike lock to prevent it from being stolen saying, “Kunin mo na iyan, regalo namin sa iyo.”
(Take it, It’s our gift to you.)
Carandang said Samonte walks from Nichols to Makati every day to sell candies.
With the ongoing general community quarantine (GCQ) due to Covid-19 pandemic, some
public transportation has been suspended to regulate the movement of the people and to
maintain social distancing. Because of this, commuters often walk or bike for kilometers
just to reach their workplaces.

WHAT’S MORE
It is important to relate text content to some particular social issues,
concerns, or dispositions in real life because literature has always been an
effective way to explore and address social issues in human culture. Stories, plays,
poems and other types of fictional media often have some social or cultural
concern embedded in the thematic background of a narrative or text.

Activity 2. Hear My Song

Directions: Read the song entitled, “The River of Dreams” by Billy Joel then answer
the questions that follow.
“The River of Dreams”
by Billy Joel

In the middle of the night Something I'd never lose

I go walking in my sleep Something somebody stole

From the mountains of faith I don't know why I go walking at night
To the river so deep But now I'm tired and I don't want to walk
anymore
I must be looking for something
Something sacred I lost I hope it doesn't take the rest of my life

But the river is wide Until I find what it is I’ve been looking for

And it's too hard to cross In the middle of the night

Even though I know the river is wide I go walking in my sleep

I walk down every evening and I stand Through the jungle of doubt
on the shore
To a river so deep
I try to cross to the opposite side
I know I'm searching for something
So I can finally find out what I've been
looking for Something so undefined

In the middle of the night That it can only be seen

I go walking in my sleep By the eyes of the blind

Through the valley of fear In the middle of the night
To a river so deep I'm not sure about a life after this
I've been searching for something God knows I've never been a spiritual
Taken out of my soul man

16
Baptized by the fire, I wade into the river
That runs to the promised land
In the middle of the night
I go walking in my sleep
Through the desert of truth
To the river so deep
We all end in the ocean
We all start in the streams
We're all carried along
By the river of dreams
In the middle of the night.

Lesson Identifying the three (3) types of connections
between texts and real life
3

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

A good reader must know how to make connections to everything- from the
books they read to the communities they live in and to draw what they already know to make
sense of what they read.

This module will be the application of the three (3) types of connections between
text to particular social issues, concerns, or disposition in real life particularly:
1) Text to self
2) Text to text
3) Text to world

After this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Put oneself in other people’s position to see, explain, and resolve the heart of
the problem in a reading text.
2. Read texts, point out the issue, and connect it to particular social issues,
concerns, or dispositions in real life.
3. Provide information about a place in our country, find issues and ways to resolve
them.

22
WHAT IS IT
Activity 1. True or False
Directions: Let us first recall the previously discussed three (3) types of
connections. Write T if the statement is TRUE and F if the statement is FALSE before the
number.

______ 1. Text to world connections are connections where you relate one material to
another that you have read or have already come across.

______ 2. Text to world connections are the larger connections that a reader brings to
a reading situation including our perception of the world.

______ 3. Text to text connections are personal connections that you make between
you and the selection you are dealing with.

______ 4. “I saw on the news that Delta is now a dominant COVID-19 variant in
our country, and this book I am reading right now tells more about how it is
highly transmissible,” is an example of text to world.

______ 5. “This character has the same problem that I read about in a story last year,”
is an example of text to text connections.

Well, how was it? Always remember these; relating yourself to the characters
of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is text to self-connection,
comparing the theme of the novels written by Nicholas Sparks to each other is text to
text connections and relating real-life issues and scenarios to things read from a
selection, on the other hand, is text to world connection.

23
WHAT’S MORE
This time you will answer activities to enhance your skills in making
connections.
Activity 1. Text to Self-Connection
Directions: Read the text and answer the questions that follow.

Alice is surrounded by junk. Everywhere she looks; people are littering, tossing recyclable
materials in the garbage, and wasting perfectly good resources that could be reused. Alice decides
to take a stand against this. She and a small group of environmentally conscious friends create an
anti-littering campaign. When one of their videos goes viral, Alice finally gets the attention that she
needs to make her point.

Questions:

1. What was the issue in the text?

____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

2. What did Alice do to resolve the issue?

____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

3. If you were Alice, what will you do if you have neighbors like the ones in the text?
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________

4. If you will make a campaign about cleaning the environment, what will it be in particular? Is it
about cleaning the river, ocean, parks, etc.?

Out of School
Published by Manila Bulletin

As public schools across the Philippines prepare

to open in September, the United Nations
Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed
concern that millions of Filipino children will
spend another year missing out on many
opportunities for optimum education.
“The Philippines is one of the five countries
in the world that have not started in-person classes since the pandemic began, affecting the
right to learn of more than 27 million Filipino students,” it said, citing Bangladesh, Kuwait,
Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela as the four others.
As of early August, when the Department of Education (DepEd) announced President
Duterte’s decision to start school year 2021-2022 on September 13, 2021, and end it on
June 24, 2022, a total of 209 schooldays in adherence to Republic Act 7797, lengthening
“the school calendar from 200 to no more than 220 class days,” face-to-face classes remain
a remote possibility.
Among the biggest impacts of the disruption in education, according to DepEd chief
Leonor Briones, is the absence of face-to-face interactions. Prolonged absence in school
will have serious implications on children, she said.

Delta Now Dominant COVID-19 Variant in the Philippines – WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday, August 31, that the
highly transmissible Delta variant was now the dominant COVID-19 variant in the
Philippines.
"The Delta variant is now the dominant variant in the Philippines based on
existing data we're seeing," said Rabindra Abeyasinghe, WHO representative to the
Philippines.
The more infectious Delta variant was found in 69% of the 748 positive
samples that underwent genome sequencing recently.
Asked if there was already a community transmission of the Delta variant in
the Philippines, Abeyasinghe said, "most certainly."
"We do know the Delta variant spreads very fast, more transmissible, and has
a shorter incubation period. So, yes, with this kind of transmission, with this kind of numbers,
we are in community transmission with Delta variant," he added.
On August 23, the Department of Health (DOH) said that community
transmission of the Delta variant was already taking place in Metro Manila and Calabarzon.
At the time, however, further studies were needed if there was community spread of the
variant in other parts of the country.
