I. Topic: Types of Speech Context

Direction: Analyze the picture and select from the communication contexts what you think matches
the picture.
IV. Lesson Opening: This module covers the strategies to overcome communication
breakdown to have effective communication. Study the content of this within one (1) week
(October 18, 2021 to October 25, 2021) including the activities and assessment. You are asked to
submit it through SCHOOLOGY on or before October 25 until 8:00 PM.
There is never a day that you do not communicate. It could be group discussion,
Facebook status update, dinner conversation with someone you’re interested in, or
small talk with a family member. In this case, it is necessary for you to understand

the concept of speaking in a variety of communication situations and the number of people you
are communicating with.
Since you have already learned the various components of communication in the previous
modules, this time you are going to look at speech context and find out how to act appropriately
in different communication situations.
SPEECH CONTEXT
According to Devito (2005), “Context refers to the setting in which the communication takes place.
Context helps to establish meaning and can influence what is said and how it is said.
Speech context is important because it helps you to communicate appropriately, understand the meaning
of any message conveyed, and respond accordingly.
1. INTRAPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
This refers to a type of communication that is focused on one person, where the
speaker acts both as the sender and receiver of the message. The message is made up of
thoughts and feelings, while the medium is the brain that processes what you think and
feel.

Thinking Form - This includes thinking as well as dreaming, both daydreaming and the dreaming we do
when we are asleep, i.e. nocturnal dreaming.
Examples: concentrating, thinking about what to do
Vocal Form - This way of performing intrapersonal communication is essentially talking to yourself out
loud.
Examples: ranting or shouting inside your room after being scolded, talking to yourself in front of the
mirror
Written Form - This involves all writing you do with yourself as the only intended reader. This could for
instance be a personal journal or diary, but could just as well be a shopping list, reminders, or notes.
Examples: personal journal or diary, shopping list, reminders or notes

2. INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION
this type of communication that takes place between and among people and creates a
personal relationship between and among them. Normally, it includes two
individuals, and it can vary from casual to very personal to formal and informal.
Example: Consoling your friend, conversation between you and your brother.
Small group - this applies to interactions involving at least three but not more than twelve people
engaged in face to face interactions to achieve the desired goal. In this type of conversation, all
participants can freely express their ideas throughout the discussion.

3. PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
This type refers to a communication that enables you to send or
deliver a message before a crowd. The message can be transmitted for
informative, persuasive and entertainment purposes.
Examples:
Speaking to Inform - The speaker has a goal of informing the audience on a topic or giving them
updated information.
Examples: giving lectures, a guest speaker presenting information to a group of students about how to
apply for college
Speaking to Persuade - The speaker has a goal of convincing the audience to accept his or her point of
view.
Examples: a student council president trying to convince school administrators to allow the students to
have a “Mental Health Week”, convincing your parents to let you go and hang out with your friends.
Speaking to Entertain - The speaker has a goal of amusing the audience while delivering the message.
Examples: giving your brother, sister or friend a toast for their wedding celebration, motivational speeches
4. MASS COMMUNICATION
This refers to communication through televisions, radios, newspapers,
magazines, books, billboards, internet and other types of media.
Examples:
