Standard Dimensions for Digital Images

This document will help you customize your images for different uses.

TYPICAL CAPTURE SIZES _____________________________________________

Digital Camera files
Aspect ratios vary for different camera, some standard examples:
• 3.1 MP - 2048 x 1536 pixels (JPG HQ 1.0 MB, TIFF 18.9 MB)
• 5 MP - 2580 x 2048 pixels (JPG HQ 1.5 MB, TIFF 31.7 MB)
• 10 MP - 3648 x 2736 pixels (JPG HQ 2.2 MB, TIFF 59.9 MB)

Scans
Good Quality: 8” x 10”, 300 ppi (3000 x 2400 pixels) 24 bit color
TIFF or PSD (Photoshop) file format
(Approximate file size: 20 MB)
“Archival” Quality: 11” x 17”, 300 ppi (5100 x 3300), 48 bit color,
TIFF or PSD (Photoshop) file format
(Approximate file size: 96.3 MB)

TYPICAL SIZES IN USE _______________________________________________

Web Pages
Typical browser window is 955 x 600 pixels. Each area of the page layout, such as the top
banner or columns, has additional width restrictions. Be careful not to overfill any layout area.
• Top banner: not more than width of container for page content
• Button or icon: 10 to 50 pixels wide/high
• Thumbnail link: 60 to 100 pixels wide/high
• In-line illustration: 250 to 350 pixels wide
• Enlargement: 600 w x 500 h to 1200 w x 800 h pixels
(larger dimensions assumes audience has high bandwidth connection and large display)

PowerPoint
(These are full-screen dimensions. Make images smaller if using captions or other text.)
• XGA projectors: (1024 x 768 pixels) 10” x 7.5” at 96 ppi
• UXGA projectors: (1600 X 1200 pixels) 10” x 7.5” at 160 ppi
This size image will also look good on older SVGA (800 x 600) or XGA (1024 x 768)

Video
Image files must be in RGB or Grayscale mode* (not CYMK). Before inserting into a video
project, crop images to constrain for aspect ratio: 4:3 for regular video, or 16:9 for HDV or DV
widescreen. For best results resize pixel dimensions as follows:

Standard Video (4:3 ratio)

iMovie HD6 & iMovie DV 720 x 528, or 1440 x 1056 (if using zoom & pan effects)
NTSC DV 720 x 480
DVCPRO 1280 x 1080
Widescreen Formats (16:9 ratio)
HDTV 720p 1280 x 720
HDTV 1080p 1920 x 1080

files, RGB mode.

Note: Check printing device specs or ask printing service to confirm best resolution.
