Gender Inequality
Gender Inequality
based on their gender. It is naturally related to the discrepancies between the roles that
have been given to male and female individuals in society. In fact, the ongoing “war”
between men and women has been the most famous gender inequality fight and has been
provoking lots of arguments and contra versions even if it is not the only gender inequality
that exists in society nowadays: gender inequality also affects other people namely who
don’t belong to either the feminine nor masculine gender.
Given that women have been more victims of gender inequalities over the years, men have
been strengthened in the position of dominating gender. Therefore it seems relevant to
wonder whether this inequality is only a perception issue of one particular gender by the
other or if it has become the expression of the will of the dominating gender to maintain
their superiority?
Throughout history, women have faced intense discrimination from a lack of legal rights and
very little independence from their husbands, to being thought to have inferior brains. In
many societies, women have long been viewed as less than fully human. Men were the
“breadwinners” and women's role was primarily a domestic one; it included child rearing
and caring of the well-being and feeding of the family. Their husbands could still abuse them
and get away with it easily. Moreover, a woman could not go school nor enter the
University, get a good well-paid job, and even vote. Women barely had any rights!
The movement of gender discrimination found an early voice in the writings of Anthony
Beecher. A British author who devoted much effort to glorifying housekeeping and
attempting to convince his female readers that their daily duties, however tedious or
distressing, constituted important works assigned to them by Nature and God.
Fortunately, for the past decades, some efforts were made thanks to strong-willed activists
like suffragettes and feminists.
However, it is still a very serious and widespread issue: women are still at the bottom of the
chain in many areas.
Gender discrimination still exists even if it is often invisible to most of us, it happens in our
everyday life in all matters, from employment and education to politics and the media
without us being aware of it. History has shown that the roles and responsibilities for men
and women were already chosen for them. In the United Kingdom, there was a trend of
male dominance in employment until World War II where women gained male-orientated
jobs for the first time while men were fighting in the front line. And it has to be said that
recently, the division between males and females is less evident but inclination towards
male dominance in employment is still shown. It was reported that the gender pay gap in the
UK is one of the highest in Europe: women who work full-time earned 17% less per hour
than men and women working part-time earned 39% less per hour than men working full-
time (Office of National Statistics, 2008). In the United States, the average working woman
earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes.
Furthermore, there is an unbalanced and stereotyped representation of women in the media
and a lot of the time they are dominated by men in their roles. Gender inequalities
traditionally were greatly enforced in media output with women being used in
advertisements to sell anything from cars to tobacco. All the more, women were often
portrayed as ‘sex objects’ in the media, especially in the 1980’s when magazines were first
distributed. It is still the case as women are displayed in magazines, mostly for male
entertainment which is a major proof of gender inequality as it amplifies the objectification
of women, in order terms the perception of women by men. As a consequence, women
often feel insecure and not confident enough. Furthermore, some of the most visible
examples of gender inequality and discrimination come from “Me Too” stories. Women are
coming forward in huge numbers relating how they’ve been harassed and abused by men
who have power over them.
In fact, the global system of power at its cores is broken. Even when women are in power,
which is proportionally rare on a global scale, they deal with a system built by the patriarchy.
In conclusion, inequalities of which I cited the examples created with time, a gender that
feels superior and who dominates and stops women from being and enjoying their rights.
From all the discussing above, gender inequality is obviously an urgent problem in the world.
Despite the fact that its volume much decreases, it still exists and makes a lot of people
suffer from its consequences every day. And there are many reasons leading to gender
discrimination which cannot be solved easily. However, with education and progressive
thoughts of people, there are also reasons to trust in the future of gender inequality being
stopped. Then, hopefully, people can live in fairness no matter what gender they are.
Humanity needs both men and women, and we are equally important and need one
another. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow
up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life. And we have to teach our girls that they
can reach as high as humanly possible. Gender equality is a human fight not a female fight. It
affects us all.
