Solution to Question 1
Solution to Q.1

All the possible combinations CBR, DLC thickness, Shoulder type and Traffic have been incorporated and the optimum slab thickness against
every combination has been figured out with the help of the IRC: 58-2015 excel sheet. In all the possible combinations, the GSB and CTB
thicknesses are kept constant at 225 mm and 150 mm as they don’t have any direct impact on the design thickness of the slab due to the presence
of the DLC layer.

Table 1 shows all the combinations and corresponding slab thicknesses (before and after considering tinning), Dia-Spacing-Length of Dowel and
Tie bars.

From Table 1 it is very difficult to conclude the effect of any parameter on the design slab thickness. Therefore, the following graphs have been
plotted to see the effect of the parameters on the thickness of the slab.

From Fig 1.2, it has been observed that the changes in K-value have little effect on the thickness
of the PQC slab. The other parameter that also has little effect on the thickness of the PQC slab
is DLC thickness.

This is because k value is restricted to 300 MPa/m. Hence, even though there is an increase
in CBR value and DLC thickness, the k being underestimated will lead to same slab thickness
for higher strength subgrade carrying same traffic loads.

However, from Fig. 1.1 and Fig. 1.4 it is evident that the dominating parameters affecting
the pavement thickness are-

1. Traffic (CVPD)
2. Shoulder Type (Earthen or Tied)

Four combinations from Table 1 (Sl. 19, 27, 45 and 74) have been solved manually and shown
