21 Century Literature From The Philippines and The World Activity Sheet

The document is a learning activity sheet that contains two exercises. The first exercise analyzes the poem "Saturday" by Charles Mungoshi and discusses its themes of life and nature. It describes the plot, style, imagery, and accessibility of the poem. The second exercise provides a close analysis and critical interpretation of the short story "In The Name of Salomé" by Julia Alvarez. It discusses the story's themes, characters, plot, point of view, language, and imagery. The reflection comments that critical analysis was the most challenging part but that challenges help with learning.

21ST CENTURY LITERATURE FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND THE WORLD

ACTIVITY SHEET

IV. Activity Proper

Exercise 1

The poem, “Saturday” by Charles Mungoshi has the theme of life and nature since
it is all about what’s going on in life and as well as with the nature itself. The author
presented the plot by a sequence and narrative of events in a life usually happened
inside the house every Saturday. I can picture out someone in the poem sitting in the
window and looking outside and observing busy streets and neighborhood by himself.
Author did not use rhyme scheme at the end of each line in this poem. Yes, the author
also uses free style or free verse format in his writing since he didn’t worry on matching
words and rhyming them. It doesn’t use any strict meter too and because it has no set
meter, poems written in free verse can have lines of any length, from a single word to
much longer as what this poem has to be. There are some lines that the author used
some figurative language. For example, when he said that he would watch the cars
“crawl back again” and “foot of those hills” as a kind of personification. He also used
images when he wrote about a “cocoa-coloured fields”. Yes, it is indeed easy to
understand by ordinary readers even just like me as a students. It is not confusing and
the choice of words are simple and understandable. The author did not use strong
emotions to control the language in the poem. Hence, I find it very relaxing and peaceful,
imagining and visualizing what the poem is all about. The author’s nationality isn’t
reflected in the poem. There is no anyway someone could determine it just by reading
this poem.

Exercise 2
Instructions: Write a close analysis and critical interpretation of the selection below.

In The Name of Salomé

By Julia Alvarez (Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill)

In The Name of Salome by Julia Alvarez has a wide variety of themes. One of the
themes of the novel is the contrast of political struggles and war with the inner
struggles
and oppression Salomé and Camila experience. The character that alternate in between
the story of Salome Urena, a poet and her daughter Camilla, a professor of Spanish at
Vassar College were clearly depicted in the story. The story settled during a political
turbulent in Dominican Republic of the nineteenth century, also in Cuba, upstate New
York, and Minnesota. The plot of the story goes back and forth from and during the
upheaval in Dominican Republic to where Salome used her writing skill through poetry
to motivate her country men for freedom and up to the present life of Camila that
wanted to return to her country from an exile. The conflict in between of the character
built when Camila is living a life in the shadow of her mother Salome and felt like she
was a “bead unstrung from the necklace of generations” in an assertive and narrative
tone and third person point of view. All of these were clearly presented in the story
although some could tell that it was not in chronological order. The characters portray a
realistic scene because author herself revealed that Salome and Camila are both real
people that she turned into a fictional character in this story. Author did clearly used
simple language in this writings because it was easy to understand. Although the story
foretold on the side of Salome’s times during upheaval and political dispute, it didn’t
contain any violent scenes and languages aside from in the third paragraph in which she
mentioned about the “fresh blood in this old house” that didn’t mean any further than
that. Alvarez used most of the visual imagery in her way to described and narrate the
people or the character, places and everything in the story which made it really catchy
and realistic that would make the reader felt everything were existent and factual to
dive in.

V. Reflection

1. What did you like most/didn’t you like about the activities?
- I learned new things and that is what I like about this activities. Since there is no
teacher that would explain writing skills and techniques I used to research
everything and most of them are new to me. For example, a tone, theme, point of
view, sensory imagery and working on it for critical analysis. I know my reach
and ability is limited. There are things that I might learn more and this is the fact
that I don’t like about.

2. Which part of the activities did you find challenging?

- Critical Analysis is very challenging for me. On the side of evaluation and
investigation and most of all reading a long and long story was also a challenge
accepted for me. This is my first time writing, making and working on this kind of
analytical paper. But challenges are fun for some time just like working on this
one. Once I finished one and another, I could tell that I’m ready for the next. So,
critical analysis is quite hard and challenging but I learned many more things.
