Lesson 7 TYPES OF RESISTOR

In this lesson the learners will learn the different electrical units
of measurement. They will also learn the different symbols and formulas in
computing some electrical parameters.

TYPES OF RESISTOR

LINEAR RESISTOR
⮚ A linear resistor whose resistance remains constant with the increase
in the potential difference or voltage applied to it.

NON- LINEAR RESISTOR
⮚ Non linear resistors are those types of resistor which the current
passed through it is not exactly directly proportional to the potential
difference or voltage applied to it.

FIXED RESISTOR
● A type of linear resistor that the set value cannot be changed. This
includes carbon composite resistor, film resistor and wire wound
resistor.

VARIABLE RESISTOR
● A type of linear resistor used to change the resistance in an
electronic circuit. It can be used as a three terminal as well as two
terminal device and commonly used for device calibration. Variable
resistors include rheostat, potentiometer, thermistor, varistor and
photoresistor.

1.CARBON COMPOSITE RESISTOR

⮚ Low Inductance
⮚ Ideal for high frequency applications
⮚ Very cheap
⮚ Have very large tolerances

2. FILM RESISTOR
⮚ The resistive value of the resistor is controlled by the increasing the
desired thickness of the deposited film.
⮚ Resistance up to 10 MΏ can be obtained.

3. WIRE WOUND RESISTOR


⮚ Made by winding a thin metal alloy wire on to an insulating ceramic
form in a spiral helix.

⮚ Available in very low ohmic and high precision values from 0.01 to
100kΏ

4. RHEOSTAT
⮚ Rheostat is an adjustable resistor used in applications that
require adjustment of current or varying of resistance in an
electric circuit.

5.POTENTIOMTER

⮚ A potentiometer is a pot in electronic technology with a sliding


contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider.
⮚ Potentiometer are commonly used to control electrical devices
such as volume control

6.THERMISTOR
⮚ A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varies significantly
with temperature.
⮚ Thermistor can be used as current limiting devices for circuit
protection as replacement for fuses.

7. VARISTOR

⮚ A varistor (voltage dependent resistor) function is to conduct


significantly increased current when voltage is excessive.

8.PHOTORESISTOR

⮚ A photoresistor or light dependent resistor (LDR) exhibits


photoconductivity. It is commonly used in street lights, clock, radios
and alarm devices.

DIODE
An electronic component that allows electric current to pass in one
direction. This unidirectional behavior is called rectification, and is used to
convert alternating current to direct current.

TYPES OF DIODES

1.LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED)

⮚ Are made of two-lead semiconductor light source which emit light
when activated.
⮚ LEDs are available for either infrared or visible light and commonly
used in traffic lights, automotive lighting, home lighting, large-screen
displays etc.

2.PHOTODIODE

⮚ A photodiode is a semiconductor device that converts light into an


electrical current.
⮚ The photodiode has a small transparent window that allows light to
strike the pn junction.
⮚ Photodiodes are commonly used in photo detectors, cameras as photo
sensors, and optical switches.

3. LASER DIODE

⮚ The term LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated


Emission of Radiation.
⮚ A semiconductor device that similar to light -emitting diode (LED)
⮚ Laser diodes are commonly used in the pick -up system of compact
disk (CD)players, laser printers, fiber optic system and for medical
purposes.

4. SMALL SIGNAL DIODE

⮚ A small device with disproportional characteristics whose


applications are mainly involved at high frequency and very low
current devices such as radios and television.

5.LARGE SIGNAL DIODE

⮚ It has a high current and voltage performance and can be used in


electrical devices which are used to suppress high peak voltages.
⮚ This diode has a large PN junction layer
⮚ It increases the current forward capacity and reverse blocking
voltage.
⮚ The main applications of these diodes are in battery charging
devices like inverters.

6.ZENER DIODE

⮚ A diode designed for limiting the voltage across its terminals in reverse
bias.

⮚ A zener diode maintains a nearly constant voltage across its terminals
over a specified range of Zener current.

7.VARACTOR DIODE

⮚ A variable capacitance diode


⮚ A current regulator diode keeps its forward current at a constant
specified value.

8.SCHOTTKY DIODE

⮚ Schottky diodes are high-current diodes used primarily in high


frequency and fast-switching applications and also known as hot-
carrier diode.
⮚ A Schottky diode is formed by joining a doped semiconductor region
with a metal such as gold, silver, or platinum.

9.PIN DIODE

⮚ The pin diode consists of heavily doped p and n regions separated by


an intrinsic region.

10. TUNNEL DIODE

⮚ The tunnel diode exhibits a special characteristic known as negative


resistance.
⮚ This is commonly useful in oscillator and microwave amplifier
applications.

11. SHOCKLEY DIODE

⮚ Known as PNPN diode. It is equal to thyristor without a gate terminal


which means the gate terminal is disconnected.
⮚ Most common applications of Shockley diode are switching circuits, to
turn on the SCR.
