Quarter 2– Module 4
Types of Resistor and Diode
(WEEK 7&8)
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to
encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time.
You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while
being an active learner.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part
of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your
answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.

Let’s Learn
This module was prepared and written with to help you achieve the
required competency in Consumer Electronics. This will be the source of
information for you to acquire knowledge and skills in this craft, with
minimum supervision or help from the teacher. With the aid of this material
you will acquire the competency independently and at your own pace.

Let’s Elaborate
TYPES OF RESISTOR
LINEAR RESISTOR
⮚ A linear resistor whose resistance remains constant with the increase
in the potential difference or voltage applied to it.
5
NON- LINEAR RESISTOR
⮚ Non linear resistors are those types of resistor which the current
passed through it is not exactly directly proportional to the potential
difference or voltage applied to it.
FIXED RESISTOR
● A type of linear resistor that the set value cannot be changed. This
includes carbon composite resistor, film resistor and wire wound
resistor.
6
VARIABLE RESISTOR
● A type of linear resistor used to change the resistance in an
electronic circuit. It can be used as a three terminal as well as two
terminal device and commonly used for device calibration. Variable
resistors include rheostat, potentiometer, thermistor, varistor and
photoresistor.
⮚ Low Inductance
⮚ Ideal for high frequency applications
⮚ Very cheap
⮚ Have very large tolerances
2. FILM RESISTOR
⮚ The resistive value of the resistor is controlled by the increasing the
desired thickness of the deposited film.
⮚ Resistance up to 10 MΏ can be obtained.
7
⮚ Available in very low ohmic and high precision values from 0.01 to
100kΏ
4. RHEOSTAT
⮚ Rheostat is an adjustable resistor used in applications that
require adjustment of current or varying of resistance in an
electric circuit.
5.POTENTIOMTER
8
6.THERMISTOR
⮚ A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varies significantly
with temperature.
⮚ Thermistor can be used as current limiting devices for circuit
protection as replacement for fuses.
7. VARISTOR
8.PHOTORESISTOR

DIODE
An electronic component that allows electric current to pass in one
direction. This unidirectional behavior is called rectification, and is used to
convert alternating current to direct current.
TYPES OF DIODES
16

when activated.
⮚ LEDs are available for either infrared or visible light and commonly
used in traffic lights, automotive lighting, home lighting, large-screen
displays etc.
2.PHOTODIODE
3. LASER DIODE
17
4. SMALL SIGNAL DIODE
6.ZENER DIODE
⮚ A diode designed for limiting the voltage across its terminals in reverse
bias.
18
⮚ A zener diode maintains a nearly constant voltage across its terminals
over a specified range of Zener current.
7.VARACTOR DIODE
