LinearFunctionsClassActivity Renata Natalia SofiaP

The document discusses linear functions, providing their key characteristics such as having a straight line graph and relating two variables proportionately. Various forms of writing linear equations are presented along with examples of finding the slope and graphing linear functions. Types of lines including parallel and perpendicular lines are identified based on their slopes.

Topic notes: Linear function

a) A linear function is any function that graphs a straight line, relating two (x, y) variables
proportionately.

b) Characteristics of a linear function:

1. Are those whose graph is a straight line
2: They have one independent variable (x) and dependent variable (y)
3. No variable in a linear equation is raised to a power greater than 1 or used as the
denominator of a fraction
4. A is the constant term or the y intercept. It is the value of the dependent variable when x =
0.
B is the coefficient of the independent variable. It is also known as the slope and gives the rate
of change of the dependent variable.

c) The slope represents the inclination of a line. It is also known as the

rate of change between any two points on the graph.
Types of slope

Change in “y”

Change in “x”

Formula: 𝒎 = 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒙 = 𝒙𝟐 +𝒙𝟏

Forms of writing a linear function:

Form Equation Elements

Ax + By + C = 0 𝑨, 𝑩, 𝑪 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑰𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒅 ℝ

Point - slope y-y1=m(x-x1) 𝑷(𝒙𝟏 , 𝒚𝟏 ) and m

Slope - intercept 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 M is the variable
B is the “y” intercept
And “y” and “x” are the
variables

Intersection with the x and y axis:

a) When finding the intersection with the x axis, we make: y=0 when finding the intersection
with the y axis, we make: x=0

Types of lines

Slopes Equal

Slopes: -1

Slopes: Different slopes

Examples:
1. Find the slope of the line that passes through:
(-3, -8) y (5, 6).

The slope is 7/4

2. Find the slope of the following line: 3. Find the intersection of the x and y axis 3x – 6y = 12
3X-6(0)=12 3(0)-6y=12
3X=12 -6y=12
X=4 y=-2

*(3,-3),(1,1)
1+3/1-3= -4/2= SLOPE: m=-2
Forms of linear equations and their elements.
4.Rewrite the equation as Ax +By = C. A, B and 5.Write an equation of a line in y intercept
C should be integers. form that has a slope 4 and y intercept of 1.
Y + 5 = -5 (x+4) Y=4x+1
Y+5=-5x-20
Y+5x=-20-5
Y+5x=-15
5x+y= -15

6. A table of values is shown:

Find the intersection with the y axis, the slope and the equation of the line (y intercept
form).

Y intercept: 8
Slope: -3/1= -3
Equation: y= -3x+8

7. Graph the following equations:

-
Graph: 𝑦 = . 𝑥 Graph: 𝑦 = −𝑥 + 3
.
Graph: 𝑦 = − / 𝑥 + 1

Graph the following line: y – 2x = - 9

Y=2x-9

8. Write the equation of the line that passes through the given points (y intercept form and general
form):
(4,-2), (-6,-6)
Y=mx+b
M= -6+2/-6-4= -4/-10= 4/10= 2/5
B= -2=2/5(4)+b= -2=8/5+b= -2-8/5=b= -18/5=b
Y=2/5 x -18/5

Ax+By=C
-2/5 x + y= -18/5
-2x + 5y= -18

9.Identify which lines are parallel and which lines are perpendicular given the following
information.
The equation of three lines is shown below:
Line 1: y= - 2x +8
Line 2: y = - 2x – 6
Line 3: 3x - 6y = - 12 -> -3x/-6= 1/2x
Determine if the pair of lines is parallel, perpendicular or neither.
Lines 1 y 2: parallel
Lines 2 y 3: perpendicular
Lines 1 y 3: perpendicular

10. Find and equation that models the following situation and give a solution.
A construction crew is building a stretch of highway. The part they were working on had a total length of
56 miles when they started, the construction crew lays 4 new miles of highway every day. Let L be the
total length of the highway in miles and D the amount of days the crew has been working.
a) Write an equation that models the relationship between L and D.
L=56+4D

b) Using the equation you found on the previous exercise, find the total length of the highway that will
have been laid after 31 days of construction work.
L=56+4(31)
L=56+124= L=180
