be derived from this value?

a) An airplane pilot wishes to fly due west. A wind of 80Km/hr is blowing toward the south. If
the speed of the plane in still air is 320Km/hr, in which direction should the pilot head?
What is the speed of plane with respect to the ground?

b) Four identical hollow cylindrical columns of mild steel support a big structure of mass
50,000Kg.The inner and outer radii of each column are 30cm and 40cm respectively.
Assuming the load distribution to be uniform, Calculate the compressional strain of each
column.( Young’s modulus of steel is 2x1011N/m2).

c) A cube floating on mercury has one fourth of its volume submerged. If enough water is added
to cover the cube, what fraction of its volume will remain immersed in mercury?
d) A stone is dropped from the top of a tall building and 1 sec later a second stone is thrown
vertically down with a velocity of 20m/s. When and where will the second stone overtake the
first?

10. Solve any two numerical problems: (2x4=8)


a) A steel cylinder has an aluminum alloy piston and at a temperature of 20 0C when the internal
diameter of the cylinder is exactly 10 cm, there is an all-round clearance of 0.05mm between
the piston and cylinder wall. At what temperature will the fit be perfect? (α steel=1.2x10-5K-1and
αAl alloy=1.6x10-5)

b) Find the result of mixing 10g of ice at -200C and 20g of water at 400C.(Sp.heat capacity of
ice=0.5cal/gC0)

c) A bucket full of water is kept in a room at constant temperature. The water in the bucket
cools from 550C to 500C in 5 mins and from 500C to 450C in 7 mins. Estimate the room
temperature. What time does it take to cool from 450C to 400C? (Neglect heat loss through
bucket)

11. A coin 2.54cm in diameter held 254cm from the eye just covers the full moon. What is
the diameter of the image of the moon formed by a concave mirror of radius of curvature
1.27m? (4)

12. Two charges of +1µC and -4µC are separated by a distance of 2m. Determine the
position of null point. (3)

b) A person moving toward east at the rate of 2m/s finds that the wind seems to blow directly
from the north . On doubling his speed, it appears to come from north east. Find the actual
speed and the direction of the rain.

c) Find the work done required to break up a drop of water of radius 5x10 -3m into eight drops of
water, assuming isothermal condition.(surface tension of water=72x10-3N/m)
d) A man who can swim in still water with a speed of 2m/s wants to cross a river 200m broad,
flowing with a speed of 1m/s. find(i)the time of crossing by shortest route and(ii)the minimum
time of crossing.

a) 50g of water and an equal volume of kerosene (density 0.8 g/cm3) are placed one after
another, in the same calorimeter of water equivalent 10g. They are found to cool from 55 0C to
500C in 8mins and 4.5 mins respectively. What is specific heat of the kerosene?

b) The pendulum of a clock is made of brass whose linear expansivity is 1.9x10-5K-1. If the clock
keeps correct time at 150C, how many seconds per day will it lose at 20 0C?

c) Calculate how much steam from water boiling at 100oC will just melt 50 gm of wax at 200C.
(Melting point of wax=550C, sp. heat capacity of wax=0.7cal/g C0, sp. latent heat of fusion of
wax=35cal/g)

11. A narrow beam of light is incident normally on one face of an equilateral prism
(refractive index 1.45) and finally emerges from the prism. The prism is now
surrounded by water (refractive index 1.33). What is the angle between the directions
of the emergent beam in the two cases? (4)

12. Two charge-1µC and 2µC are placed at the corners A and B of an equilateral triangle
ABC of side 2m. Calculate the magnitude and direction of electric field at C.

Find the final velocity (magnitude and direction) of each glider if the collision is elastic.

b) A stationary mass explodes into two parts of mass 4 units and 40 units respectively. If the large
mass has an initial kinetic energy 10J, what is the initial kinetic energy of than smaller mass?

c) The flywheel of a gasoline is required to give up 500J of kinetic energy while its angular velocity
decreases from 650rev/min to 520rev/min. what moment of inertia is required?

d) A rubber rod of catapult has a cross sectional area 1.00 sq.mm and total unscratched length is
10.0cm. It is stretched to 12 cm and then released to project a missile of mass 50g. Calculate the
velocities of projection, taking the Young’s modulus of rubber are 5.0x108 Nm-2.

a) A ball of copper of specific heat capacity 400 Jkg-1K-1 weighing 400grm is transformed from a
furnace to 1 kg of water at 200c. The temperature of water raises to500c. What is the original temp of
the ball?

b) A bar of 0.2m in length and cross section area 2.5x10-4 m-2 is ideally lagged. One end is maintained
at 373k while the other is maintained at 273k by immersing in melting ice. Calculate the rate at which
ice melts owing to the flow of heat along the bar.

c) Two glass bulbs of equal volume are joined by a narrow tube and are filled with the gas at STP.
When one bulb is kept in melting ice and other is placed on hot bath, the new pressure is 877.6mm of
Hg. Calculate the temperature of hot bath.

11. An erect image four times magnified is formed by a lens of focal length 15cm. Calculate the
position of object and image from lens. [4]

12. A 1 µf and 2 µf capacitors are connected in parallel across a 1200 V supply line. Find the
charge on each capacitor. The charged capacitors now disconnected from the line and form each
other and reconnected with the terminals of unlike sign together. Find final voltage across each.
