Introducing Background Information with the Past Continuous

A. Work with a partner. Imagine that each sentence is the beginning of a story. Write two
sentences in the past continuous to give background information.
1. The beach was gorgeous. The sun was shining on the water. The waves were moving
quickly.
2. The bank was full of customers. The bank tellers were working very hard. The manager of
the bank was doing his part as well.
3. The students were late to class. The teacher was waiting for them. The principal of the
school was asking the students for an explanation after they arrived.
4. My boss was very angry. He was acting as if he had a problem. The workers were starting
to feel nervous.
5. The cafeteria was crowded and noisy. The customers were being noisy. The clerk of the
cafeteria was doing her best to assist the people.
6. The sky looked cloudy and dark. The sky was showing signs of rain. People were not going
out of their houses.

Forming Sentences with Past Time Clauses

Match the clauses to make logical sentences. Pay attention to punctuation.

Changing the Position of Past Time Clauses

Change the order of the clauses in these sentences. Add or delete commas where necessary.

1. Alex saw Maria when he went to the laundromat.

When Alex went to the laundromat, he saw Maria.

2. While Reiko was swimming, she got a cramp in her leg.

Reiko got a cramp in her leg while she was swimming.

3. When my sister woke up this morning, she ate pizza for breakfast.

My sister ate pizza for breakfast when she woke up this morning.
4. It started to rain while I was driving to work.

While I was driving to work, it started to rain.

5. Eva became a lawyer after she finished high school.

After Eva finished high school, she became a lawyer.

Writing About Events in Sequence

Read each situation. Then complete each sentence with a clause in the simple past.

1. Silvio and Maria bought a new house last month.

Before they bought the house, they saved a lot money.

When they saw the house for the last time, they liked it very much.

After they moved in, they decided to make some changes on the house.

2. Megan went to a great concert last night.

Before she went to the concert, she invited some friends.

When she arrived at the concert, she was very happy.

After she left the concert, she went home.

3. Paul traveled to Europe last summer for his vacation.

Before he traveled to Europe, he saved some money.

When he was in Europe, he went sightseeing.

After he returned from Europe, he planned another visit with his family.
