Lesson 3 Basic Parts of An Automobile Engine

The document describes the main components of an automobile engine. It lists 31 parts, including the engine block, crankshaft, pistons, cylinders, valves, camshaft, fuel pump, oil pump, radiator, alternator, and battery. It provides a brief description of the function of each part and some include an actual photo of the part. The purpose is to explain the basic workings and interactions between the internal combustion engine components that work together to propel the vehicle.

PART DESCRIPTION/ FEATURE ACTUAL PICTURE

1. Engine Engine’s main body where all its vital

block parts (pistons, crankshaft, camshaft,
valves, etc.) are being placed inside

2. Crankshaft Changes the piston’s linear movement

into rotational movement, making it
possible for the wheels to turn, moving
the car forward

3. Transfer the up-down or linear motion of

Connecting the pistons to the crankshaft’s rotational
rod motion by attaching the pistons to the
crankshaft

4. Piston The main actors of the four-stroke cycle

that transfer the explosive force of the
burned expanded gases inside the
cylinder to the crankshaft via connecting
rod with its up and down motion
5. Flywheel Transfer the engine’s power of
rotational motion via crankshaft to the
transmission system through a set of
gears, enabling the wheels to turn
around, thus moving the car.

6. Cylinder Found just above the cylinder block, it

head contains the camshaft and the intake
and exhaust valve assembly

7. Engine Found in the cylinder head, it let the air

valves in (intake valves) and out (exhaust
valves) of the cylinders which help ignite
the fuel, driving the pistons up and
down the cylinder

8. Valve Lift the weight of the valves intake and

springs exhaust) during the stroke cycles with
the right timing with the camshaft

9. Camshaft Responsible for the intake and exhaust

valves opening and closing actions at
the right timing with the correct stroke
interval in each cylinder possible
10. Head Acts as a sealer in between the cylinder
gasket head and block to avoid mixing of
engine oil and coolant

11. Fuel Transfers and circulates fuel under

pump pressure from the fuel tank, going to the
fuel lines and to the cylinders necessary
for the engine to operate

12. Oil pump Transfers and circulates oil necessary

for the engine’s lubrication of its
mechanical parts under pressure from
the oil pan, through the oil galleries to
the engine

13. Timing Transmits the crankshaft rotation to the

chain camshaft, causing the right timing as
the valves (intake and exhaust) open
and close at the exact engine stroke
14. Found at the very top of the engine, it
Camshaft/ closes and seals the cylinder head,
valve cover sealing and protecting the parts inside
at the same time preventing oil leakage

15. Oil pan Where the engine oil is stored and acts
as the oil reservoir and cooling area,
found underneath the engine

16. Oil filter Gets rid and filter oil contaminants and
particles as it circulates throughout the
engine, keeping the engine clean inside

17. Controls the coolant going inside the

Thermostat radiator, thereby keeping the engine’s
constant working temperature within
optimum range
18. radiator Serves as the cooling area of the hot
coolant coming from the engine and
with the flowing air going in the engine,
cools down the coolant before going
back to the engine for cooling

19. Starter Cranks the engine to start its operation

as it then effectively starts the car with
the ignition switch

20. Intake Moves and distributes clean air

manifold necessary for the combustion mixture in
the cylinders from the outside to the
engine

21. throttle Controls the amount of clean air that will

body get into the engine
22. Oil Usually placed right beside the oil pan,
dipstick long metal stick used to measure the oil
level deposited in the oil pan

23. Fuel Injects and sprays atomized fuel to the

injector premixed air-fuel mixture in the
cylinders
24. Spark A device that provides electric spark in
plug gasoline engines, igniting the air-fuel
mixture during the power stroke, making
combustion possible to push the piston
down

25. Ignition A step-up transformer that converts the

coil 12 volts battery supply to 25-30,000
volts, enough to power up the spark
plugs in creating electric sparks or
ignition

26. Alternator Supplies the necessary electrical power

for the car’s electrical and lighting
systems, at the same time, charges the
battery while running the engine

27. Exhaust Collects the waste gases from the

manifold combustion chambers through exhaust
valves and transmits such gases to the
vehicle’s emission system
28. Air filter Removes and filters contaminants and
particles from the air as it enters the
engine and combustion chambers,
keeping the engine clean from the
outside

29. fuel filter Removes and filters contaminants and

particles from the fuel as it enters
combustion chambers

30. A rotating shaft that directs, in accurate

Distributor firing order, the high current voltage to
the spark plugs produced by the ignition
coil, causing them to have spark for
ignition

31. Car A rechargeable battery responsible for

battery supplying electrical current to the
vehicle; feeds current to the starter to
start the engine and powers the car’s
electrical systems
