STORY 1: Joseph and the Angel

It was a time of surprises for

Mary and Joseph. They were
planning to get married, but one
day Mary told Joseph that she
was expecting a baby. Joseph
knew he wasn’t the father so
although he loved Mary very
much, he decided he would not
marry her.

The angel said,“Don’t be afraid to take Mary as

This meant that the baby didn’t have a human

STORY 2: Herod and the Wise Men

Most people are very happy when a baby is born. But

the news of Jesus’ birth didn’t please everyone! King
Herod became very worried when some Wise Men
came to him asking about the birth of another King.

A new star had appeared in the sky. Wise Men in the

east knew that this was a sign of the birth of a new
King. They travelled to Jerusalem wanting to find the
child so they could worship Him.

Thinking Herod would know where the child was, the Wise Men went to him and

Herod asked some of his advisors if they

Herod called the Wise Men to him and said,“Go and find the child and when you
have found Him, come back and tell me where He is so that I can go and worship
Him too.”

But Herod didn’t really want to worship Jesus. He wanted to kill Him!

STORY 3: The Wise Men and Jesus

If you’ve ever been on a long car journey you may have got
lost. Sometimes it is easy to miss the road signs.

God didn’t want to let the Wise Men lose their way. So after
they had left Herod, they saw the star again. The star led
them right to the place where Jesus was!

The Wise Men were very happy when they saw the star. Soon
they would meet the one they had travelled so far to see!

Q: How did the Wise Men feel when they saw the star?

Soon the Wise Men arrived at Bethlehem and found the house where Jesus, Joseph
and Mary were staying.

The Wise Men had travelled a long way. It may

have been up to 18 months after the birth of Jesus
when they eventually found Him in Bethlehem. But
they never gave up! They knew that this child was
someone very special and worth finding!

 The Wise Men had brought three gifts for Jesus - gold, frankincense and myrrh.
These were very expensive gifts - the sort usually given to kings. The Wise Men
knew Jesus was no ordinary child and that He deserved the best possible gifts.

After they had stayed a while, it was time to go. The Wise Men remembered that
Herod had asked them to go back to Jerusalem. However, God knew that Herod
wanted to kill Jesus. In a dream God told the Wise Men to go straight home and not
tell Herod where Jesus was.

So off they went, praising God that at last they had seen the King and Saviour He
had given to the world!

STORY 4: The Escape into Egypt

Have you ever waited a long time for some news?

Herod had been waiting for the return of the Wise
Men, but they did not arrive! They had obeyed God
and gone straight home.

Herod became very angry because he feared that

one day this child might be king instead of him. He
decided that every boy in Bethlehem who was under
two years old must be killed! What a terrible thing to
do!

Again God spoke to Joseph in a dream. He told

Joseph to take his family and escape to Egypt.
There he would be safe until God told him to return.

 Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the Bible had foretold His
level 2 birth. God had planned for His Son to be born in Bethlehem. God
knew that Herod would try to kill Him. God also knew that Jesus would
spend some time in Egypt. The Bible had predicted:
