STORY 1: David on the run

C7
READ:
KEY VERSE:
1 Samuel 20: 17
1 Samuel 20: 1-4 Ask someone to help
you find this verse.

King Saul had become very

jealous of David, to such
an extent that on several
occasions he tried to kill him.
David had to flee from place to
place, seeking safety.

Saul’s son, Jonathan, however,

remained a true friend to David.
Jonathan promised to do his
best to save David’s life.

Q: Put these words in the correct spaces:

level 2
David Saul Jonathan
1. S __ __ __ wanted to kill D __ __ __ __ .
2. D __ __ __ __ and J __ __ __ __ __ __ __ were good friends.
3. J __ __ __ __ __ __ __ promised to help D __ __ __ __ . /6
It came to a time when King Saul was holding a great feast. This feast
lasted for several days. David was expected to attend, because he was
Saul’s son-in-law. Because of the danger to his life, he stayed away.
On the second day, Saul noticed that David was absent and he asked
Jonathan about him. Jonathan tried to explain to his father why David
was missing, but Saul would not listen. He flew into a furious rage and
hurled a spear at Jonathan for daring to take sides with David! Jonathan
then left the feast, feeling very sad.
Q: Who was:

1.The king? S __ __ __
2.The king’s son? J __ __ __ __ __ __ __
3.The king’s son-in-law? D __ __ __ __
4.Absent from the feast? D __ __ __ __
/4
From that day on, Jonathan was sure that his father
would kill David, if he could only catch him! He really
wanted to warn David of his danger, so he left the
feast and went in search of him.

Sure enough, the two good friends met! They were

able to spend a little while talking to each other in a
field.

Q: Unjumble these letters.

1. Jonathan left the (esatf) __ __ __ __ __ and went to look for (Ddvai) __ __ __ __ __ .

2. David was (idghin) __ __ __ __ __ __ in a (eildf) __ __ __ __ __ . /4
It was not easy for Jonathan to tell David that King Saul hated him, and that he was
planning to murder him. But because Jonathan loved David, he was faithful to him
and told him the whole truth. The KEY VERSE tells us that;

Q: Shade in the words.

See 1 Samuel 20: 17 /6

In a little while they had to part. Jonathan went back to the city, and David went into
hiding once more. How thankful David was to have a true friend who helped to save
his life!

The Bible teaches that each of us can have Jesus as our Friend! Think about
how much He loves us - even to the point of dying for us! When we trust Him, He
becomes, not only our Saviour, but also our faithful Friend.

STORY 2: David spares Saul’s life

READ:
KEY VERSE:
Ephesians 4: 32
1 Samuel Ask someone to help
24: 1-22 you find this verse.

One day Saul heard that David was

hiding, in a part of the country where
there were many rocks and caves.

He took 3,000 of his best soldiers and

started searching for him. David and
his men hid far back in a cave. It so
happened that Saul came into that
cave, not knowing that the man he
was looking for was there!

“Now is your chance to get rid of him,”

whispered David’s men.

But David would not kill Saul.

In spite of all his bad deeds, he was

the king whom God had appointed to
rule the people. To kill him would be a
sin in God’s sight.

Q: Write TRUE or FALSE after each of these sentences:

1. David and his men hid in a forest.

2. Saul searched for David with 3,000 men.

3. David could not wait to kill Saul.

/6
David did, however, creep up very quietly to where
Saul had put his coat down. Without making a sound,
he cut off a piece of his coat! He crept back into the
darkness of the cave and waited until Saul moved out.
Then David got up, took the piece of cloth in his hand,
and walked to the mouth of the cave. He shouted
loudly to the king who, on hearing him, looked round.
What a surprise for Saul to see David standing there!

www.besweb.com
Q: Answer these questions.

1. Who was first to leave the cave?

2. What did David take with him from the cave?

/4
“Look what I have here,” called David, as
he held up the piece of cloth. “I could have
killed you. But I wouldn’t do such a thing.
Why are you trying to kill me? I haven’t
done you any harm!”

With such words as these David reasoned

with King Saul. The king’s heart was
touched.

He realised that David had been good to

him in sparing his life. He gave up chasing
David (for a little while, at least!) and went
back to his palace.

David was a forgiving person. He did not want to take revenge on Saul.

The Bible teaches that God wants to forgive us for the wrongs that we have done.
He can do so because Jesus has died for our sins.

Q: Fill in the missing letters to answer these questions.

1. What does God want to do for us? F __ __ g __ __ __ u s o __ __ s __ __ s .

2. Who died for us? T __ __ L __ __ __ __ e __ u __ .
/6
When we believe in the Lord Jesus and have our sins forgiven, we should then try to
forgive others when they wrong us.

Q: Colour the letters in the Key Verse which tells us to:

“Be kind one to another,

/4
even as God has forgiven us.”

Galatians 2: 20
1 Samuel 31: 1-6 Ask someone to help
2 Samuel 5: 1-5 you find this verse.

King Saul and his men were at war with neighbouring

people.

/4
It was a fierce battle. Three of King Saul’s sons were killed. One of them was
Jonathan who had been such a good friend to David.

King Saul was badly injured by an arrow. He asked

one of his men to draw his sword and kill him. He
wanted the soldier to do this because he was afraid
that the Philistines might capture him and torture
him.

The soldier, however, was not willing to kill the king,

so Saul took his own sword and killed himself with it.

Q: Tick the correct answers.
Who killed King Saul? The Philistines One of his own men Himself
What killed King Saul? An arrow A sword A spear /4

David was very upset when he heard that Saul

and Jonathan had been killed. He wrote a poem
(or lament) about them. (Try and find it in your
Bible - 2 Samuel 1: 17-27) In the poem, David
recalled Jonathan’s great love for him. He could
never forget it!

Neither should we forget the wonderful love of

Jesus for us! When Paul, the writer of many
parts of the New Testament, thought about
Jesus, he wrote:

Q: Colour the words of the Key Verse and join the dots.

and gave Himself

for me. Galatians 2 : 20
/6
Before long a new king was chosen. His name was David! Many years had passed
since Samuel had anointed him with oil, as a sign that one day he would be king!

Since that day he had often been hunted and attacked by Saul, but God had never
left him. Now God’s promises were being fulfilled. David, who was now 30 years old,
began his long reign. For the next 40 years he ruled the people of Israel.

Q: Put the correct numbers in the spaces.

1. David was __ __ years old when he became king.
2. He reigned for __ __ years.
/2
No matter what happened, David always put his trust in God. The Bible teaches that
if we do the same, we will also find that He will help us, and fulfil His plans for us.

STORY 4: David and Mephibosheth

READ:
KEY VERSE:
2 Samuel 9: 7
2 Samuel Ask someone to help
9: 1-13 you find this verse.

Mephibosheth was the son of Jonathan and the grandson of King Saul. He was just
five years old when both his father and his grandfather died in the battle with the
Philistines. (See Story 3)

On that very same day, little Mephibosheth had a dreadful accident, as a result of
which his feet were badly injured. From that time onwards, he could not walk.

Q: Who was Mephibosheth’s father? J __ __ __ __ __ __ __

Who was Mephibosheth’s grandfather? S __ __ __

What was the matter with Mephibosheth? He could not w __ __ __ /6

Mephibosheth grew up in a lonely part of the country. He
was almost unknown, until one day King David searched
him out, and called him to the palace.

Mephibosheth was now a young man, and he must have

wondered why the king had sent for him. Perhaps he
thought that David was going to take revenge on him for
all the trouble his grandfather, Saul, had caused!

When Mephibosheth got to David’s palace, he discovered

that he had nothing to fear! The king had sent for him
because he wanted to do him good!

The king said “I will show you kindness.”

Q: Write the words the king said in the speech bubble.

2 Samuel 9: 7

David could not forget his friendship with Jonathan. Indeed, he had
level 2 promised Jonathan that he would be kind to him and to his family “for
ever”! (See 1 Samuel 20: 15) Now, years after Jonathan was dead,
David remembered his promises and wanted to keep them. The only
way he could do so was by being kind to Mephibosheth.

Q: Put TRUE or FALSE after each of these:

David brought Mephibosheth to the palace in order to:

1. have him put to death.

2. carry out promises he had made to Jonathan.

3. get revenge for the way his grandfather had treated him.

4. show him great kindness.

/4
King David had great plans for Mephibosheth.
To begin with, he gave him all the land which
had belonged to his grandfather, King Saul. He
also appointed men to plough the fields, sow
the crops, and then bring in the harvests.

Best of all, the king decreed that Mephibosheth

would now live at Jerusalem, and would dine
with him every day, just as if he was one of the
king’s own sons.

Q: Put the following words in the correct blank spaces.

Saul David Jonathan Mephibosheth

1. King David gave ...................................... the lands which had
belonged to ....................................... .
2. Every day ................................ dined with King ........................ . /5
3. David was kind to Mephibosheth for the sake of ............................... .

David’s kindness towards Mephibosheth was in response to the

kindness he had been shown by Jonathan, and the promises he made
to him. The Bible teaches that we should show kindness to others in
response to God’s kindness to us.
