Slicing of Ice

Mohammed Bilal Ahmed completed a research project on slicing ice under pressure for his Class XII chemistry practical examination. The project aimed to understand the different states of matter. The experiment showed that applying pressure with a wire and weights caused the ice cube to slowly slice in half as the wire moved through it, as the pressure caused the ice to melt but then re-freeze above the wire. This demonstrated how a change in pressure can induce a phase change from solid to liquid and back in water.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project is to

understand the different states of
matter by the slicing ice experiment.
INTRODUCTION
Matter can exist in certainly considered one among
numerous distinctive stages: strong, liquid or
gaseous. A alternate among those stages is because
of a alternate in temperature or stress. Water in its
strong shape is water ice, in its liquid shape it's
miles known as liquid water, and as a gaseous it's
miles known as water vapor. Some materials, like
Nitinol, have multiple strong section. A alternate in
temperature or stress will reason them to alternate
from one kind of strong to any other kind of
strong, similar to a alternate in temperature will
reason water to alternate from a strong to a liquid
or vice versa. In this activity, you may discover the
strong to liquid section alternate of water because
of a alternate in stress.
Theory
When water is in its strong phase (ice), an boom in
stress will motive the ice to soften, with none
alternate in temperature. The wire with the weights
putting down places stress at the ice, which reasons
it to soften. As the wire movements down thru the
ice cube, the stress is launched above the wire, and
the water can re-freeze above it. Ice skaters may
also use this assets of water. The stress of a skate
blade reasons a skinny movie of ice beneath the
skate to soften, making the ice slippery. When the
skate movements, the ice re-freezes in the back of it.
activity
AIM: To slice a ice cube using pressure.

APPARATUS:
• Ice cube
• Thin wire
• Ruler
• Heavy book
• Metal silverware (spoons and forks)

PROCEDURE:
• Loop one end of the wire around half the silverware and
twist to secure them together. Do the same with the other
end.
• Place the ruler with one end off the edge of a table. Place a
heavy book on the other end. If using a plastic ruler, put a
piece of cloth or paper on it so it’s not slippery.
• Place the ice cube on the end that is hanging off the edge.
• Lay the wire over the center of the ice cube with the
weights hanging down.
• Watch as the wire very slowly “cuts through” the ice cube.
After ½ to 1 hour, it should be in the center.
RESULT
We see that the wire slices its way through the
ice , As the wire moves down through the ice
cube, the pressure is released above the wire,
and the water can re-freeze above it.
Precaution
• Do not disturb the apparatus.
CONCLUSION
This experiment helps us learn and
understand the effect of pressure on matter
which goes through different phases.
