3.1 Introduction
Community engagement pedagogies, often called “service learning,” are ones that combine
learning goals and community service in ways that can enhance both student growth and the common
good. For our service learning activity our group decided on helping local school to achieve good result
and enhance their enrollment in higher education.
3.2 Background
Knowledge and education are the basis of all things that can be accomplished in life. Teachers
provide the power of education to today’s youth, thereby giving them the possibility for a better future.
Simplify the complex and make abstract concepts accessible to students. Expose new ideas and topics
that the students might otherwise not have come into contact with. They can expand on interests and
push their students to do better.
3.3 Need of undertaking the study
A good, high-quality education is to do with outcomes. An outcome is a culminating
demonstration of learning. It occurs after the completion of the academic program. It is a result of
learning, which is a visible and observable demonstration of three main things—knowledge, combined
with competence, combined with orientations. It is these three factors that determine the quality in
higher education. The concept of cooperative learning, a methodology that teachers use to group
students together and, thus, impact on learning in a positive way.The proponents of this model theorize
that working in a group improves the attention, involvement and acquisition of knowledge by students.
3.4 Issues/challenges faced
Serial no. Topic Description

1 Technology limitations Technology plays a huge roll in

all the latest trends in modern
society and the field of
education is no exception. But
technology is not many school
administrators’ strong suit and
this has made it a real
challenge for them to identify
what and when they should
adopt technology to improve
performance.

2 Lack of motivation Attendance of students is

drastically dropping due to
many reasons. Certain schools
and colleges lay down rigid
course-work and extremely
difficult syllabus. Which
results in less interest and
interaction.

3 Lack of Communication Effective communication

between teachers and students
has the potential to improve the
learning experience and create
a positive environment in the
classroom..

4 Timetable management One of the daily challenges

faced by admins, timetable
managing. Based on the
presence or availability of
the staffs, the management
schedule the time table..
3.5 Problem Statement
1. Technology limitations
Technology plays a huge roll in all the latest trends in modern society and the field of education
is no exception. But technology is not many school administrators’ strong suit and this has made it a real
challenge for them to identify what and when they should adopt technology to improve performance.
To narrow it down, we have a few reasons for the importance of technology in education.
Students are engaging with technology constantly outside of the classroom. Kids like to be interactive,
and learning through technology has now become a part of their lifestyle. The technology movement has
been implemented in post-secondary education as well as other professional jobs. For new teachers,
technology is considered a necessity for the learning environment. Kids know technology better than
most adults. It has become the easiest way they learn, because it is such an integral part of their life.
Engaging with technology in the classroom has not only helped them learn better, but they also
acquire multi-tasking skills. At this day in age, they hardly know how to learn without it. This
knowledge is important, because they would be way behind in the real world without it.
Budget cuts and defunding towards public education has been an ongoing issue in India that is
seemingly getting worse and worse. And there is a clear correlation between lack of resources having
negative consequences on students’ abilities to learn and achievements in schools, specifically grades.
Even schools in more prominent and wealthier districts are still facing the dilemma of budget cuts.
Schools have to scramble their resources for the necessary programs, effectively cutting courses, lowering
wages for teachers and staff, and completely revising the core structure of what is taught at these schools.
There is no doubt that budget cuts for public schools negatively affect students at a young age from
getting a good education.
Corporate social responsibility in education has always taken the lion’s share of the funding.
Although there is a bigger focus on health projects due to the COVID-19 pandemic, funding CSR in
education is still top priority for Indian companies if we look at the latest sustainability reports and
annual declarations. Access to quality education is fundamental to the growth of India. Private and
public companies like ITC group, HDFC banks, etc and NGOs like Pratham, Akanksha Foundation can
provide fundings for schools.

1. Lack of motivation
Often parents perceive their children’s lack of interest in studying as laziness, disobedience,
or even ungratefulness. Yet, more often than not there are deeper underlying factors that can result in
no motivation to study.Having no motivation to study can have a dramatic impact on students’
grades.
However, it’s not the only danger. Students are a lot less likely to perform at 100% of their capacity and
miss integral aspects of a subject. If that happens over a long period of time, students can form significant
gaps in knowledge which can prevent them from optimally performing in respective subjects in the
future. As a result, they won’t be able to maximize their potential and eventually settle for jobs that would
otherwise be below their capacity.
Some factors that Cause Students to Have No Motivation to Study which are
➔ Students See No Purpose in Studying
Children can have a tough time studying if they deem the subject pointless or useless. To
motivate their children to study, parents often opt for a simple explanation – studying leads to
good grades, and good grades are needed to be successful in life. While for parents this makes
sense, children do not have the same experience in life, and they may not necessarily understand
why being successful matters.

➔ Their Interest Has Turned into Obsession

When children like something, they obsess about it. So, your child’s passion or obsession may
affect other areas of their life. There is no reason to discourage your child from developing
interests and passions. However, it’s also a great opportunity to teach them how to plan and
manage their time and prioritize tasks.

➔ A Boring Teaching Method

Children have different learning preferences and needs, and planning classes that would address
them all is time-consuming.While most teachers are adequately qualified and start their careers
with the best interests of students in mind, many are underpaid, stressed, overburdened, burnt
out, have low morale or other reasons that prevent them from putting in the time and effort
needed to make all their classes engaging to everyone. As a consequence, their teaching style may
become dry and boring. That, in turn, affects the interest and motivation of their students.

➔ The Subject Is Too Challenging

There can be many reasons for why children can find certain subjects challenging. This can be
either not being naturally strong in a specific area, having developed gaps in knowledge, or
perhaps needing more time or practice with specific tasks.Repeatedly failing to succeed in a
certain subject can ultimately develop negative associations with the subject and result in no
motivation to study. It’s important to talk to a child and help them identify what is causing
the subject to be challenging to provide the best possible solution to it.

Simple Ideas To Improve Student Motivation

➔ Give students a sense of control: While guidance from a teacher is important to keeping kids
on task and motivated, allowing students to have some choice and control over what happens in
the classroom is actually one of the best ways to keep them engaged. For example, allowing
students to choose the type of assignment they do or which problems to work on can give them
a sense of control that may just motivate them to do more.
➔ Be clear about learning objectives: It can be very frustrating for students to complete an
assignment or even to behave in class if there aren’t clearly defined objectives. Students want and
need to know what is expected of them in order to stay motivated to work. At the beginning of
the year, lay out clear objectives, rules, and expectations of students so that there is no confusion
and students have goals to work towards.
➔ Change your scenery: A classroom is a great place for learning, but sitting at a desk day in and
day out can make school start to seem a bit dull for some students. To renew interest in the
subject matter or just in learning in general, give your students a chance to get out of the
classroom. Take field trips, bring in speakers, or even just head to the library for some research.
The brain loves novelty and a new setting can be just what some students need to stay motivated
to learn.
➔ Allow students to work together: While not all students will jump at the chance to work in
groups, many will find it fun to try to solve problems, do experiments, and work on projects with
other students. Social interaction can get them excited about things in the classroom and students
can motivate one another to reach a goal. Teachers need to ensure that groups are balanced and
fair, however, so that some students aren’t doing more work than others.

2. Lack of communications
Effective communication between teachers and students has the potential to improve the
learning experience and create a positive environment in the classroom. However, the relationship takes
work on both ends. Communication barriers in the classroom certainly make it difficult for students to
get the most out of their education. Many times, teachers fail to create engaging lessons and struggle to
connect with their students on a one-to-one basis. Students also have unaddressed language or speech
difficulties which lead to poor communication. Personality differences and peer pressure add to the mix,
making some classroom interactions feel awkward or forced.
Being able to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important of all life skills. It is what
enables us to pass information to other people, and to understand what is said to us. You only have to
watch a baby listening intently to its mother and trying to repeat the sounds that she makes to
understand how fundamental is the urge to communicate.
There are specific things to do that can improve communication skills:
➔ Treat everyone equally: Do not talk down to anyone, treating everyone with respect. Treat
others as your equal.
➔ Maintain a positive attitude and smile.: Even when you are speaking on the phone, smile
because your positive attitude will shine through and the other person will know it. When you
smile often and exude a positive attitude, people will respond positively to you.
➔ Be brief, yet specific: For written and verbal communication, practice being brief yet specific
enough, that you provide enough information for the other person to understand what you are
trying to say. And if you are responding to an email, make sure that you read the entire email
before crafting your response. With enough practice, you will learn not to ramble, or give way
too much information.
➔ Engage the audience in discussion: Regardless of how compelling the speaker is, all
audiences have limited attention spans. To become a more effective communicator,
make presentations and discussions interactive.

4 .Timetable management
Time management is defined as using our time productively and efficiently. People who are
good at time management are good at getting on and getting things done. They are also, however, better
at prioritising and working out what really needs doing and then discarding the other things.

Time management skills are those that help you use your time effectively and achieve desired
results. Time management skills can help you allocate your time properly and accomplish tasks
efficiently. Some of the most important skills related to successful time management skills include:

● Organisation

● Prioritsation

● Goal setting

● Communication

● Planning

● Delegation

● Stress management

● Flexibility

4. Brief description of the community

The school has great vision and a well-planned execution idea to grow with times and evolve as
a leader in modern education with the values and cultural affinity of India and the world as a whole. We
are prepared to undergo evolution from time to time as per demand in conventional and technological
aspect. The school is driven by the idea that modern educational aspiration is incomplete with the
technological application in it. Thus, since our inception we have grown with a strong technological
infrastructure both in classroom and management. The school has been successful in driving students
towards technology and their application in learning process. Teachers are trained and motivated to
synchronize conventional teaching-learning process with technology and other aids that dominate
modern educational statistics.
The founder of St. Joseph’s school, Mr.Soju Sebastian believes that the fundamental strength of a
thing is very important for it to last and throw an illuminating impression. The same thing is proven in
science as in the case of a molecular bond. What I believe is the importance of primary education for an
individual's growth, and that can be fulfilled by having a strong base during the formal education at
school. This should make us feel different once we are grown-up, it should make us self-sufficient to
aside the clouds and find the rainbow.

7 . Contribution (with details of the work performed)

We all contributed in the educational support to the students of St. Joseph’s School Students of class IX.
Specially in the field of computer science where most students gets confused to think of field of computer
science only for developing apps and softwares. Preparing lectures and class activities for a course we
have not taught takes a tremendous amount of time. We set aside ample time to design our lectures, so
that we felt more comfortable and prepared in the classroom. Teaching a course for the first time is time-
consuming, and you we find it difficult to balance with the course. Eventually things got easier with
experience. While doing this Activity Programme we aimed for showing the students how the world of
Computer Science works and how to think like a Computer Science student to solve any problem.
While Introducing our main aim in the first day we give them example of the process of making
tea. Just like the problem statement of making tea and the procedure we follow with some ingredients to
make tea we help them to understand how to code and how to find your own ingredient to solve a
particular problem with our own procedure. We help them to understand what that procedure called in
the world of Computer Science i.e. Algorithm and how to make your own algorithm. We introduced
Scratch Programming to them and made them think to manipulate the Sprite according to the problem
we gave them e.g. To make the sprite jump by changing the angle and stepping forward only. We helped
them to make certain shapes with their own logic and by the end of our Activity Programm we build a
simple car game from scratch with Scratch Programming. The feedback we got was improving day by
day as we teached them to code. And by the end of the day we introduced them various opportunities we
as a computer science student hold now. We introduced them the rapid growth of need of Computer
Geeks in this technological era. And finally concluded this Activity Programme by showing them our
mini projects and telling them how to solve real world problems by coding just like we did.

9. Descriptive Feedback of the Participating Community Members
FEEDBACK OF THE PRINCIPAL: For our volunteer work at the school, the headmaster enjoyed the
session that we conducted and also encouraged the students of take notes on what we taught.
FEEDBACK OF THE STUDENTS: For our volunteer work at the school, we discussed about Scratch
programming. The students were eager to know more about the topic. After our explanation, their
feedback was that, they enjoyed the session and was ready to learn more about the topic. They eagerly
invited us once again to visit their school.
10 . Concluding Remarks (Outcomes Achieved)
We had a very good experience teaching students about programming. We helped them to learned a lot,
but since teaching is hard, we all had to work a lot and as the days passes by we all got better at it. Being
able to experience the life of a teacher was very exciting, challenging and also new to all of us. Also the
students were enjoying our teaching quite a lot and they also learned a lot about programming.Teaching
is a very important skill as it will help the individual to broaden its knowledge about that particular
subject and also sharing knowledge increases the chances of retaining the information for a longer period
of time. Overall we had a good exposure to teaching and it totally changed our point of view for teaching.
Teaching gave us a great feel of self-satisfaction when the students understood the concept.
