Is in His Word
(minus most repeats) to see what is being said. Let us pray and ask the only true God that He may send
the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, that we may receive wisdom and understanding. As it is written,
1 Corinthians 1:24 - But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God,
and the wisdom of God.
Proverbs 4:5 - Get wisdom, get understanding: forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my
mouth.
Proverbs 4:7 - Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom: and with all thy getting get
understanding.
Proverbs 16:16 - How much better [is it] to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to
be chosen than silver!
1. The springs of heavenly peace and joy, unsealed in the soul of the teacher by the words of Inspiration,
will become a mighty river of influence to bless all who connect with him. The Bible will not become a
tiresome book to the student. Under a wise instructor the word will become more and more desirable.
It will be as the bread of life, and will never grow old. Its freshness and beauty will attract and charm
the children and youth. It is like the sun shining upon the earth, perpetually imparting brightness and
warmth, yet never exhausted. {COL 132.1}
God’s holy, educating Spirit is in His word. A light, a new and precious light, shines forth from every
page. Truth is there revealed, and words and sentences are made bright and appropriate for the
occasion, as the voice of God speaking to the soul. {COL 132.2} {MYP 246.1} {YRP 141.3}
1
The Holy Spirit loves to address the youth, and to discover to them the treasures and beauties of God’s
word. The promises spoken by the great Teacher will captivate the senses and animate the soul with
spiritual power that is divine. There will grow in the fruitful mind a familiarity with divine things that
will be as a barricade against temptation. {COL 132.3} {MYP 246.2}
The words of truth will grow in importance, and assume a breadth and fullness of meaning of which we
have never dreamed. The beauty and riches of the word have a transforming influence on mind and
character. The light of heavenly love will fall upon the heart as an inspiration. {COL 132.4}
The appreciation of the Bible grows with its study. Whichever way the student may turn, he will find
displayed the infinite wisdom and love of God. {COL 132.5}
2. God’s holy, educating Spirit is in His word. A light, a new and precious light, shines forth from every
page. Truth is there revealed, and words and sentences are made bright and appropriate for the
occasion, as the voice of God speaking to them. {CT 171.4} {GCB April 1, 1898, par. 20}
We need to recognize the Holy Spirit as our enlightener. That Spirit loves to address the children and
discover to them the treasures and beauties of the word. The promises spoken by the Great Teacher
will captivate the senses and animate the soul of the child with a spiritual power that is divine. There
will grow in the receptive mind a familiarity with divine things which will be as a barricade against the
temptations of the enemy. {CT 172.1}
The work of teachers is an important one. They should make the word of God their meditation. God
will communicate by His own Spirit with the soul. Pray as you study, “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may
behold wondrous things out of Thy law,” Psalm 119:18. When the teacher will rely upon God in prayer,
the Spirit of Christ will come upon him, and God will work through him by the Holy Spirit upon the mind
of the student. The Holy Spirit fills mind and heart with hope and courage and Bible imagery, which will
be communicated to the student. The words of truth will grow in importance, and will assume a breadth
and fullness of meaning of which he has never dreamed. The beauty and virtue of the word of God have
a transforming influence upon mind and character; the sparks of heavenly love will fall upon the hearts
of the children as an inspiration. We may bring hundreds and thousands of children to Christ if we will
work for them. —Special Testimony to the Battle Creek Church; written at Cooranbong, N.S.W., Australia,
December 15, 1897. {CT 172.2}
3. The life of Christ that gives life to the world is in His word. It was by His word that Jesus healed disease
and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea, and raised the dead; and the people bore witness
that His word was with power. He spoke the word of God, as He had spoken through all the prophets
and teachers of the Old Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ, and the Saviour desired
to fix the faith of His followers on the word. When His visible presence should be withdrawn, the word
must be their source of power. Like their Master, they were to live “by every word that proceedeth out
of the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4. {DA 390.3} {HB 27.2}
As our physical life is sustained by food, so our spiritual life is sustained by the word of God. And every
soul is to receive life from God’s word for himself. As we must eat for ourselves in order to receive
2
nourishment, so we must receive the word for ourselves. We are not to obtain it merely through the
medium of another’s mind. We should carefully study the Bible, asking God for the aid of the Holy Spirit,
that we may understand His word. We should take one verse, and concentrate the mind on the task of
ascertaining the thought which God has put in that verse for us. We should dwell upon the thought until
it becomes our own, and we know “what saith the Lord.” {DA 390.4}
In His promises and warnings, Jesus means me. God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten
Son, that I by believing in Him, might not perish, but have everlasting life. The experiences related in
God’s word are to be my experiences. Prayer and promise, precept and warning, are mine. “I am
crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live
in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20.
As faith thus receives and assimilates the principles of truth, they become a part of the being and the
motive power of the life. The word of God, received into the soul, molds the thoughts, and enters into
the development of character. {DA 390.5}
By looking constantly to Jesus with the eye of faith, we shall be strengthened. God will make the most
precious revelations to His hungering, thirsting people. They will find that Christ is a personal Saviour.
As they feed upon His word, they find that it is spirit and life. The word destroys the natural, earthly
nature, and imparts a new life in Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit comes to the soul as a Comforter. By the
transforming agency of His grace, the image of God is reproduced in the disciple; he becomes a new
creature. Love takes the place of hatred, and the heart receives the divine similitude. This is what it
means to live “by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” This is eating the Bread that
comes down from heaven. {DA 391.1}
Christ had spoken a sacred, eternal truth regarding the relation between Himself and His followers. He
knew the character of those who claimed to be His disciples, and His words tested their faith. He
declared that they were to believe and act upon His teaching. All who received Him would partake of
His nature, and be conformed to His character. This involved the relinquishment of their cherished
ambitions. It required the complete surrender of themselves to Jesus. They were called to become self-
sacrificing, meek and lowly in heart. They must walk in the narrow path traveled by the Man of Calvary,
if they would share in the gift of life and the glory of heaven. {DA 391.2}
4. The psalmist declares, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.” [Psalm
119:11.] And Paul wrote to Timothy, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be
perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” [2 Timothy 3:16, 17.] {GW 250.1}
The life of God, which gives life to the world, is in His word. It was by His word that Jesus healed disease
and cast out demons. By His word He stilled the sea and raised the dead; and the people bore witness
that His word was with power. He spoke the word of God as He had spoken it to all the Old Testament
writers. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ. It is our only source of power. {GW 250.2} {RH June
11, 1908, par. 15}
This word does not repress activity. It opens before the conscientious searcher channels for activity. It
does not leave men in uncertainty, without an object, but places before them the highest of all aims,—
3
the winning of souls to Christ. It puts in the hand a lamp that lights the way to heaven. It tells of
unsearchable riches, treasure beyond estimate. {GW 250.3}
The word of God is the standard of character. In giving us this word, God has put us in possession of
every truth essential to salvation. Thousands have drawn water from these wells of life, yet there is no
diminishing of the supply. Thousands have set the Lord before them, and by beholding have become
changed into the same image. But these searchers have not exhausted these grand and holy themes.
Thousands more may engage in the work of searching out the mysteries of salvation. {GW 250.4}
As the worker studies the life of Christ, and the character of His mission is dwelt upon, each fresh search
will reveal something more deeply interesting than has yet been unfolded. The subject is inexhaustible.
The study of the incarnation of Christ, His atoning sacrifice and mediatorial work, will employ the mind
of the diligent student as long as time shall last; and looking to heaven with its unnumbered years, he
will exclaim, “Great is the mystery of godliness!” [1 Timothy 3:16.] {GW 251.1}
5. The physician has precious opportunities for directing his patients to the promises of God’s word. He
is to bring from the treasure house things new and old, speaking here and there the words of comfort
and instruction that are longed for. Let the physician make his mind a storehouse of fresh thoughts. Let
him study the word of God diligently, that he may be familiar with its promises. Let him learn to repeat
the comforting words that Christ spoke during His earthly ministry when giving His lessons and healing
the sick. He should talk of the works of healing wrought by Christ, of His tenderness and love. Never
should he neglect to direct the minds of his patients to Christ, the Chief Physician. {MH 121.2}
The same power that Christ exercised when He walked visibly among men is in His word. It was by His
word that Jesus healed disease and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea and raised the dead,
and the people bore witness that His word was with power. He spoke the word of God, as He had spoken
to all the prophets and teachers of the Old Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ. {MH
122.1}
The Scriptures are to be received as God’s word to us, not written merely, but spoken. When the
afflicted ones came to Christ, He beheld not only those who asked for help, but all who throughout the
ages should come to Him in like need and with like faith. When He said to the paralytic, “Son, be of
good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee;” when He said to the woman of Capernaum, “Daughter, be of
good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace,” He spoke to other afflicted, sin-burdened
ones who should seek His help. Matthew 9:2; Luke 8:48. {MH 122.2}
So with all the promises of God’s word. In them He is speaking to us individually, speaking as directly as
if we could listen to His voice. It is in these promises that Christ communicates to us His grace and
power. They are leaves from that tree which is “for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:2.
Received, assimilated, they are to be the strength of the character, the inspiration and sustenance of
the life. Nothing else can have such healing power. Nothing besides can impart the courage and faith
which give vital energy to the whole being. {MH 122.3}
To one who stands trembling with fear on the brink of the grave, to the soul weary of the burden of
suffering and sin, let the physician as he has opportunity repeat the words of the Saviour—for all the
words of Holy Writ are His: {MH 122.4}

6. The Bible, and the Bible only, is to be our refuge. God is in His Word. “He shall see of the travail of his
soul, and shall be satisfied.” That is enough for us. “By the knowledge of him shall my righteous servant
justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.” [Isaiah 53:11.] If the great and loving heart of God is
satisfied with the result of His mission in the souls saved, let us rejoice. Let us work as we have never
done before. Let us put self aside, and lay hold of Jesus Christ by faith. Let us reveal Him to the world
as the One altogether lovely, and the chiefest among ten thousand. “And after this, I beheld, and lo, a
great multitude which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds and peoples and tongues,
clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands. And they cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation
to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and to the Lamb.” [Revelation 7:9, 10.] Let us take up the
praise of God here below. Let us unite with the heavenly company above. Then we shall represent the
truth as it is, a power to all who believe. {Lt138-1897.27}
7. God means we shall advance continually. Some phases of the truth in the Word we do not take hold
of, and those who do not understand it will come and ask us a question upon it. Then you bow down
for a season of prayer, and ask the Lord that you may understand what is in His Word. I think you would
have very much more praise to offer to God when you do that way than when you begin a conversation
about how this one has done or that one has done, and begin to pick flaws. Had not we better stop right
here, and make a vow before God? {Ms139-1906.19}
The life of Christ that gives life to the world is in His word. It was by His word that Jesus healed disease
and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea, and raised the dead.... {FLB 20.3}
As our physical life is sustained by food, so our spiritual life is sustained by the Word of God. And every
soul is to receive life from God’s Word for himself. As we eat for ourselves in order to receive
nourishment, so we must receive the Word for ourselves.... {FLB 20.4}
In His promises and warnings, Jesus means me.... The experiences related in God’s Word are to be my

The creative energy that called the worlds into existence is in the word of God. The word imparts power;
it begets life. Every command is a promise; accepted by the will, received into the soul, it brings with it
the life of the Infinite One.... {FLB 20.6}
The life thus imparted is in like manner sustained. “By every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of
God” (Matthew 4:4) shall man live. The mind, the soul, is built up by that upon which it feeds; and it
5
rests with us to determine upon what it shall be fed. It is within the power of every one to choose the
topics that shall occupy the thoughts and shape the character. {FLB 20.7}
Youth, in the name of Jesus I appeal to you whom I shall soon meet around the throne of God, Study
your Bible. It will prove to you not only the pillar of cloud by day but the pillar of fire by night. It opens
before you a path leading up and still upward, bidding you go forward. The Bible—you do not know its
worth! It is a book for the mind, for the heart, for the conscience, the will, and the life. It is the message
of God to you, in such simple style that it meets the comprehension of a little child. The Bible—precious
Book! {FLB 20.8}
“Blessed are the peacemakers.” ... How many are there who are truly desirous of becoming blessed,
who would not only hear but do the words of Christ? Those who will not rely upon themselves, but who
will put their trust in a power out of and above themselves, will be enabled to become doers of the
words of Christ.... {FH 193.2}
“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake” (not for their coarse, harsh spirit that
leads them to stir up strife and dissension, but “for righteousness’ sake”). The righteous are those who
desire peace and will have peace at the cost of everything save the sacrifice of principle. Truth they
cannot sacrifice, though adherence to it costs them distress, reproach, suffering, and even death. “For
their’s is the kingdom of heaven.” Those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake place the
commandments of God first in their lives, and they allow no human policy, no promise of reward, no
offer of honor, to come between them and their God. They cannot be induced to deny Christ and to
betray His cause. The rich promises of God have a place in their memory, and when the enemy comes
in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord lifts up a standard against him. The Holy Spirit opens to the
understanding the preciousness of the Scriptures.... {FH 193.3}
The church itself needs converting so that its members may be made channels of light, may be blessed
and made a blessing. A vague reliance upon God’s mercy will not obtain for us access to the throne of
grace or draw down the blessing from God the Father which He has provided for those who do His will.
Faith must center in the Word of God, which is spirit and life. Every page of the Sacred Word is illumined
with the beams of the Sun of Righteousness. {FH 193.4}
The Word of God is to be the support of the afflicted, the comfort of the persecuted. God Himself speaks
to the believing, trusting soul, for God’s Spirit is in His Word, and a special blessing will be received by
those who accept the words of God when illuminated to their mind by the Holy Spirit. It is thus that the
believer eats of Christ, the Bread of Life. Truth is seen in a new light, and the soul rejoices as in the
visible presence of Christ. —Signs of the Times, October 10, 1895. {FH 193.5}

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which
ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which
effectually worketh also in you that believe. 1 Thessalonians 2:13. {HP 134.1}
The Bible is God’s voice speaking to us just as surely as though we could hear Him with our ears. The
word of the living God is not merely written, but spoken. Do we receive the Bible as the oracle of God?
If we realized the importance of this Word, with what awe would we open it, and with what earnestness
would we search its precepts. The reading and contemplating of the Scriptures would be regarded as
an audience with the Most High. {HP 134.2}
God’s Word is a message to us to be obeyed, a volume to be perused diligently, and with a spirit willing
to take in the truths written for the admonition of those upon whom the ends of the world are come.
It must not be neglected for any other book.... When we open the Bible, let us compare our lives with
its requirements, measuring our character by the great moral standard of righteousness. {HP 134.3}
The life of Christ, that gives life to the world, is in His Word. It was by His word that Jesus healed disease
and cast out demons; by His word He stilled the sea, and raised the dead; and the people bore witness

teachers of the Old Testament. The whole Bible is a manifestation of Christ. It is our source of power.

must eat for ourselves in order to receive nourishment, so we must receive the Word for ourselves. We
are not to obtain it merely through the medium of another mind. {HP 134.5}
Yes, the Word of God is the bread of life.... It gives immortal vigor to the soul, perfecting the experience,
and bringing joys that will abide forever. {HP 134.6}
There is but little benefit derived from a hasty reading of the Scriptures. One may read the Bible
through, and yet fail to see its beauty or to comprehend its deep and hidden meaning. One passage
studied until its significance is clear to the mind, and its relation to the plan of salvation is evident, is of
more value than the perusal of many chapters with no definite purpose in view, and no positive
instruction gained. Keep your Bible with you. As you have opportunity, read it; fix the texts in your
memory. Even while you are walking the streets, you may read a passage, and meditate upon it, thus
fixing it in the mind. {LHU 261.2}

Yes, the Word of God is the bread of life. Those who eat and digest this Word, making it a part of every
action and of every attribute of character, grow strong in the strength of God. It gives immortal vigor to
the soul, perfecting the experience and bringing joys that will abide forever (The Signs of the Times, June
25, 1902). {LHU 261.5}
“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” It is not physical life that is here specified, but eternal
life, the life which is exclusively the property of God. The Word, who was with God, and who was God,
had this life. Physical life is something which each individual received. It is not eternal or immortal; for
God, the Lifegiver, takes it again.... But the life of Christ was unborrowed. No one can take this life from
Him. “I lay it down of myself,” He said.... This life is not inherent in man. He can possess it only through
Christ. He cannot earn it; it is given him as a free gift if he will believe in Christ as his personal Saviour.
“This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast
sent” (John 17:3). This is the open fountain of life for the world (S.D.A. Bible Commentary 5:1130). {LHU

For the mind renewed by the Holy Spirit, divine beauty and celestial light shine from the sacred page.
That which is to the earthly mind a desolate wilderness, to the spiritual mind becomes a land of living
streams. {ML 44.2}
The Holy Spirit alone can cause us to feel the importance of those things easy to be understood, or
prevent us from wresting truths difficult of comprehension. It is the office of heavenly angels to prepare
the heart so to comprehend God’s Word that we shall be charmed with its beauty, admonished by its
warnings, or animated and strengthened by its promises. We should make the psalmist’s petition our
own, “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law.” {ML 44.3}
God’s holy, educating Spirit is in His Word. A light, a new and precious light, shines forth from every

temptations of the enemy.... The sparks of heavenly love will fall upon the hearts of the children as an
inspiration. {ML 44.5}
We need now to arise and shine, for our light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon us. We
have no time to talk of self, no time to become like the sensitive plant, that cannot be touched without
shrinking. In Jesus Christ is our sufficiency. Will we talk faith? Will we talk of the glorious hope, of the
full and abundant righteousness of Jesus Christ, provided for every soul? ... {TMK 342.2}
The whole heavenly universe is interested, and the love of God is exercised in behalf of His faithful,
commandment-keeping people. It is God in whom we must trust.... God has the world in His hand. We
have God on our side. All heaven is waiting and longing for our cooperation. The Lord is supreme. Why
then should we fear? The Lord is almighty; why should we tremble? In the past God has delivered His
people, and He will be our helper if we will arise in His strength and go forward. {TMK 342.3}
The Bible and the Bible only is to be our refuge. God is in His Word. “He shall see of the travail of his
