ORDER OF ADJECTIVES

Adjective:

Adjectives are words that are used to describe or modify nouns or pronouns. 

Adjectives usually provide relevant information about the nouns/pronouns they modify/describe
by answering the questions: What kind? How many? Which one? How much? 

Example:
● The team has a dangerous batsman. (What kind?)
● I have ten candies in my pocket. (How many?)
● I loved that red car. (Which one?)
● I earn more money than he does. (How much?)

Order of Adjectives:

When two or more adjectives are required to describe something, there is an established order
for the adjectives. The order is generally as follows:

● Opinion
● Number
● size
● age
● shape
● colour
● origin
● material
● purpose

1) Opinion / observation/ Quality: This explains what we are thinking about something.


Normally this is our opinion, attitude or observations. These types of adjectives most times will
be before all other adjectives.

● beautiful, boring, stimulating, stupid, delicious, useful, lovely, comfortable

Eg: We have a beautiful house.

2) Number/Quantity: ) These adjectives answer the question “How much?” or “How many?”

● They can refer to specific numbers, like two or 31, or to more general amounts, like
some, few, most, whole, half, a lot, several.

Eg. Workers have completed most of their work.


3) Size: Tells us how big or small something is.

● big, large, little, short, small, tall, huge, tiny

Eg: I ordered large pizzas

4) Shape / Weight / Length: Tells about the shape of something or how long or short it is. It
can also refer to the weight of someone or something.

● round, oval, square, circular, boxy, fat, heavy, straight, long, short,

Eg: My sister has a long hair.

5) Age: Tells us how old someone or something is.

● old, young, new, ancient, antique

Eg: My father gifted a new car on my birthday.

6) Colour: The colour or the approximate colour of something.

● yellow, black, red, white, brown, whitish, blueish

Eg: She drives a red sports car.

8) Origin: Tells us where something is from.

● Thai, British, Italian, eastern, Australian, French, Indian

Eg: All the Indian batsmen played well.

9) Material: What is the thing made of or constructed of?

● sliver, wooden, silk, paper, synthetic, cotton, woolen

Eg: During summer we should wear cotton clothes.

10) Purpose: Tells what it is used for?

● Writing, cooking, reading

Eg: Reema has a writing table
