This chapter provides the theory of operation, operating instructions and illustrations
depicting actual operating controls and indicators for the SCR Drive Generator System with
a brief explanation pertaining to purpose and function.
2.1 Generator
The locations of the controls and indicators for a typical generator are shown in Figure 2-1.
A brief explanation of the purpose and function of each is given in Table 2-1.
The EG-III Control Module is used to operate and control the generator. The locations of
the controls and indicators for the EG-III Control Module are shown in Figure 2-2. A brief
explanation of the purpose and function of each is given in Table 2-2.
The front panel of the generator circuit breaker also has indicators which
show if the generator circuit breaker is open (or closed) and if the
generator circuit breaker is charged or discharged. The generator circuit
breaker cannot be charged by pushing the PUSH ON button on the front
of the generator circuit breaker. There is one of these circuit breakers
located on each of the four Generator Cubicles.
10 AC KILOWATTS Meter This meter displays the AC power that the generator is outputting. There
is one of these meters located on each of the four Generator Cubicles.
11 TEMPERATURE Meter Indicates the temperatures of various points in the winding of the
generator. RTDs installed in the windings of the generator are used to
monitor the temperatures. There is one of these meters located on each
of the four Generator Cubicles.
12 KVAR Meter Indicates the KVARs are supplied by the generator. Calibration is Zero to
2,000 KVARs. There is one of these meters located on each of the four
Generator Cubicles.
13 AC AMMETER Indicates the AC current of A, B, or C phase of the generator or the A
phase of the AC bus is supplied by the generator. Calibration is Zero to
2,500 AAC. There is one of these meters located on each of the four
Generator Cubicles.
14 AC VOLTMETER Indicates the AC line-to-line voltage of AB, BC, or CA phase of the
generator OR the AB phase of the AC bus supplied by the generator.
Calibration is Zero to 750 VAC. There is one of these meters located on
each of the four Generator Cubicles.

CONTROL/INDICATOR DESCRIPTION
POWER ON Green LED Illuminates when power is supplied to the electronic circuitry inside the EG-III
Control Module. This is done by turning the Engine Control switch to the LOW
IDLE position.
IN SYNC Green LED Illuminates when generator output is in sync with the common 600 VAC Bus
voltage.
OVER VOLTS LEDs The yellow LED illuminates when the generator output voltage is approaching
Yellow - ALARM TRIP level. The red LED illuminates when the Overvoltage Latch is set, indicating
Red - TRIP Latched the generator output voltage is >660 VAC. The Overvoltage latch is enabled only
when the generator is at RUN frequency.
In all of the cases where the red TRIP LED is latched (kept lighted):
this is done to help troubleshoot the indicated problem.
UNDER VOLTS LEDs The yellow LED illuminates when the generator output voltage <600 VAC. The red
Yellow - ALARM LED illuminates when the Undervoltage Latch is set (indicating generator output
Red - TRIP Latched voltage is <540 VAC). The Undervoltage latch can be set only when the generator
is at RUN frequency.
OVER FREQUENCY The yellow LED illuminates when the generator frequency has increased above 60
LEDs Hz and is approaching 67 Hz. The red LED illuminates when the Overfrequency
Yellow - ALARM Latch is set (indicating the generator output voltage frequency is >67 Hz) and the
Red - TRIP Latched Generator Circuit Breaker trips.
UNDER FREQUENCY The yellow LED illuminates when the generator frequency has decreased below
LEDs 60 Hz and is approaching 50 Hz. The red LED illuminates when the
Yellow - ALARM Underfrequency Latch is set (indicating the generator output voltage frequency is
Red - TRIP Latched <50 Hz). The Underfrequency Latch can be set only when the Generator Output
Circuit Breaker is closed.
EXCITER OVER Illuminates when the field of the generator is being over-excited. The Overcurrent
CURRENT LEDs Latch becomes set if the current in the Exciter is higher than 5.25 amps for an
Yellow - ALARM extended time (7.0 Amps for >20 seconds).
Red - TRIP Latched
EXCITER LOSS LEDs The yellow LED illuminates when the field of the generator is <5.25 Amps. The red
Yellow - ALARM LED illuminates when the Exciter Loss Latch is set (current through the generator
Red - TRIP Latched field winding is 0.0 Amps for 20 seconds). The Exciter Loss Latch can be set only
when the generator is running at RUN frequency.
OVER CURRENT LEDs The yellow LED illuminates when the generator output current has increased to
Yellow - ALARM >100%. The red LED illuminates when the Over Current Latch is set (indicating the
Red - TRIP Latched generator output current is >150% of rated current).
PHASE UNBALANCE The PHASE UNBALANCE circuit is not implemented in this application.

CONTROL/ DESCRIPTION
INDICATOR
REVERSE POWER The yellow LED illuminates at .-6% of the generator’s rated KW (i.e., the generator
LEDs is pulling power from the bus). The red LED illuminates if the reverse power level
Yellow - ALARM reaches -10% of the generator’s rated KW. The amount of time required before the
Red - TRIP Latched TRIP is initiated is usually six to 20 seconds (the time it takes is not critical).
FEEDBACK LOSS The Feedback Loss Circuit monitors both speed and voltage feedback. The loss of
LEDs either speed or voltage feedback will cause BOTH the yellow ALARM and red
Yellow - ALARM TRIP LEDs to simultaneously illuminate. A Feedback Loss trips the Generator
Red - TRIP Circuit Breaker but it is not latched. You, therefore, do not need to press the
ANNUNCIATOR RESET pushbutton.
ANNUNCIATOR This resets TRIPS that are no longer active. Active TRIPS will continue to latch
RESET (illuminate) red TRIP indications in the Annunciator section of the panel. If an TRIP
Pushbutton Switch is active, the red TRIP LED will continue to be illuminated and the Generator Circuit
Breaker cannot be closed.
BUS ENERGIZED Illuminates when at least one generator is connected to the AC bus.
Green LED
EXCITER POWER Illuminates if the field of the generator is being excited. It should illuminate when the
Green LED ENGINE CONTROL SWITCH is set to either the HIGH IDLE or RUN positions.
LOAD COMMAND Illuminates when the generator is ready to supply current to a load. Supplying
Green LED current to the load is done by closing the generator circuit breaker. When the
ENGINE CONTROL SWITCH is turned to one of the IDLE positions, the LOAD
COMMAND lamp will extinguish before the generator circuit breaker is
automatically opened.
LINE DEMODULATION Illuminates when the EG-III Control Module is detecting the frequency of the output
Green LED voltages of the generator. In this case, the EG-III Control Module controls the
frequency by controlling the speed of the engine. When the ENGINE CONTROL
SWITCH is set to the HIGH IDLE or RUN position, the LINE DEMODULATION
LED should illuminate.
PULSE PICKUP Green Illuminates when the engine is turning, causing the Tach-pickup to produce pulses.
LED
ENGINE CONTROL Four position switch (OFF/LOW IDLE/HIGH IDLE/RUN) to control engine speed.
Switch Before turning this switch to the RUN position, use the LOW or HIGH IDLE
positions to allow the engine to idle until it has reached it’s recommended
temperature.
CIRCUIT BREAKER Indicates the selected generator’s output is in synchronization with the 600 VAC
Red LED Main Bus and that there are no active TRIP conditions.
CIRCUIT BREAKER Closes the Generator Output Circuit Breaker when the CIRCUIT BREAKER LED is
Pushbutton illuminated (refer to the previous listing in this table).
VOLTAGE TRIM This green LED indicates unit output voltage is greater than the other units
MASTER LED connected on-line and is therefore considered the master (the controlling unit).
VOLTAGE TRIM This potentiometer permits adjustment of generator output voltage.
Potentiometer

CONTROL/ DESCRIPTION
INDICATOR
FREQUENCY TRIM Indicates unit output frequency is greater than other units on-line and is therefore
MASTER LED the master (the controlling unit).
FREQUENCY TRIM This potentiometer permits manual adjustment of generator output frequency.
Potentiometer
HIGH IDLE TRIM This potentiometer permits adjustment of generator output frequency when the
Potentiometer ENGINE CONTROL switch (refer to a previous listing in this table) is set to the
HIGH IDLE position.
2.2.1 To Start an Engine and Connect the Associated Generator to the AC BUS
To start an engine and connect the associated generator to the AC Bus, perform the
procedure given in Table 2-3.
Table 2-3. Procedure to Start an Engine and Connect the Associated Generator to the
AC Bus
STEP PROCEDURE
1 Move the ENGINE CONTROL switch (refer to Figure 2-2) from the OFF position to the LOW IDLE or
HIGH IDLE position.
With the EG-III Control Module ENGINE CONTROL switch set to the HIGH IDLE
position, the engine warms more quickly.
2 Connect the Hands Off Cranking (HOC) battery by closing the HOC Circuit Breaker.
The HOC Circuit Breaker can be located at a number of various locations. Refer to
Drawing XXXX-001-00 in the drawing package for this job to determine the specific
location. (XXXX in the Ross Hill drawing number for your equipment)
3 Verify the PULSE PICKUP LED (refer to Figure 2-2) is illuminated. This indicates that the engine is
running.
4 Allow the engine to run at idle until it reaches the recommended operating temperature. Monitor the
temperature on the TEMPERATURE METER (Item 11 on Figure 2-1) of the engine/generator that you
are operating.
5 Once the engine has reached the recommended operating temperature, move the ENGINE
CONTROL switch (refer to Figure 2-2) from the LOW IDLE or HIGH IDLE position to the RUN
position.
Table 2-3. Procedure to Start an Engine and Connect the Associated Generator to
the AC Bus (Concluded)
STEP PROCEDURE
6 Verify the EXCITER POWER and LINE DEMODULATION LEDs (refer to Figure 2-2) are illuminated
when engine speed has increased.
This will not happen in LOW IDLE or HIGH IDLE if the HIGH IDLE TRIM potentiometer
(refer to Figure 2-2) is set to a low setting.
7 Use the SYNCHRONIZING SWITCH (Item 32 on Figure 2-1) to select the generator which is going to
be brought online.
8 Adjust the FREQUENCY TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) clockwise until the FREQUENCY
METER (Item 28 on Figure 2-1) indicates 60 Hz.
9 Adjust the VOLTAGE TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) until the AC VOLTMETER (Item 14 on
Figure 2-1) of the appropriate Generator Cubicle indicates 600 VAC.
10 Charge the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER (Item 9 on Figure 2-1) for the generator being
brought on line. Charging the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER is done by pumping the black
handle located on the front of the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER.
11 To connect the generator to the AC Bus, depress the lighted PUSH TO CLOSE pushbutton switch
(refer to Figure 2-2).
To connect the second generator to the AC Bus, perform the steps listed in Table 2-4.
Table 2-4. Procedure for Connecting the Second Generator to the AC Bus
STEP PROCEDURE
1 Turn the SYNCHRONIZING SWITCH (Item 32 on Figure 2-1) to the number of the second generator
to be connected to the AC Bus.
2 Turn the VOLTMETER SWITCH (Item 22 on Figure 2-1) on the second Generator Cubicle to select
the A phase voltage of the second generator. This will cause the AC VOLTMETER (Item 14 on Figure
2-1) to display the selected generator’s A phase voltage.
3 Turn the EG-III Control Module VOLTAGE TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) to set the voltage
shown on the AC VOLTMETER (Item 14 on Figure 2-1) to 600 VAC.
4 Turn the EG-III Control Module FREQUENCY TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) to cause the
SYNCHROSCOPE (Item 29 on Figure 2-1) to rotate slowly clockwise and the SYNC lamp (Item 31 on
Figure 2-1) to brighten and dim very slowly.
5 Charge the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER (Item 9 on Figure 2-1) for the generator being
brought on line. Charging the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER is done by pumping the black
handle located on the front of the GENERATOR CIRCUIT BREAKER.
6 Verify that both the CIRCUIT BREAKER red LED and IN SYNC green LEDs (refer to Figure 2-2) are
illuminated. When the needle on the SYNCHROSCOPE, (Item 29 on Figure 2-1) points straight up
and the SYNC lamps (Items 31 on Figure 2-1) are extinguished, press the EG-III Control Module
CIRCUIT BREAKER pushbutton (refer to Figure 2-2). The second generator is now on-line.
7 Verify the EG-III Control Module LOAD COMMAND LED (refer to Figure 2-2) is illuminated. This
indicates that the generator is ready to supply power. Turn the SYNCHRONIZING SWITCH (Item 32
on Figure 2-1) to the OFF position.
Follow the procedures listed in Table 2-4 to connect the third or fourth generator to the AC
bus.
2.2.4 Adjusting Frequency Trim and Voltage Trim Potentiometers on the EG-III Control
Module
Adjusting the speed of the engine of an engine/generator affects the output AC frequency
of that engine/generator. When the engine speed of a particular engine/generator is
adjusted higher than that of the other engine/generators connected to the AC Bus, it's
FREQUENCY TRIM MASTER LED (refer to Figure 2-2) will illuminate, indicating that it is
controlling the frequency of the AC Bus.
Adjusting the output of the generator of an engine/generator affects the output AC voltage
level. When the output voltage of a generator of a particular engine/generator is adjusted
higher than that of the other engine/generators connected to the AC Bus, it's VOLTAGE
TRIM MASTER LED (refer to Figure 2-2) will illuminate, indicating that it is controlling the
frequency of the AC Bus.
The EG-III Control Module for the Master Engine will control the output AC
frequency of each and every one of the engine/generators. The EG-III Control
Module for the Master Generator will control the output AC voltage of each
and every one of the engine/generators connected to the AC Bus.
Perform the steps listed in Table 2-5 to select an engine to be the master engine.
STEP PROCEDURE
1 Connect all the desired engine/generators to the AC Bus. Decide which engine will be the Master
Engine. Rotate the FREQUENCY TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) for each of the other
engine/generators counterclockwise until the FREQUENCY TRIM LED (refer to Figure 2-2) adjacent
to each of the FREQUENCY TRIM knobs (refer to Figure 2-2) are extinguished. Ensure that the
FREQUENCY TRIM LEDs (refer to Figure 2-2) for all of the engine/generators which are not going to
be the Master Engine are all extinguished.
2 The FREQUENCY TRIM LED (refer to Figure 2-2) adjacent to the FREQUENCY TRIM knob (refer to
Figure 2-2) on the EG-III Control Module which has NOT been adjusted should be illuminated. This
indicates that the engine/generator controlled by that EG-III Control Module is the Master Engine.
3 Lock the settings of all of the FREQUENCY TRIM potentiometers (refer to Figure 2-2) in position by
turning the locking rings on the FREQUENCY TRIM potentiometers clockwise.
Perform the steps listed in Table 2-6 to select an engine to be the master generator.
STEP PROCEDURE
1 Connect all the desired engine/generators to the AC Bus. Decide which generator will be the Master
Generator. Rotate the VOLTAGE TRIM potentiometer (refer to Figure 2-2) for each of the other
engine/generators counterclockwise until the VOLTAGE TRIM LED (refer to Figure 2-2) adjacent to
each of the FREQUENCY TRIM knobs (refer to Figure 2-2) are extinguished. Ensure that the
VOLTAGE TRIM LEDs (refer to Figure 2-2) for all of the engine/generators which are not going to be
the Master Generator are all extinguished.
2 The VOLTAGE TRIM LED (refer to Figure 2-2) adjacent to the VOLTAGE TRIM knob (refer to Figure
2-2) on the EG-III Control Module which has NOT been adjusted should be illuminated. This indicates
that the engine/generator controlled by that EG-III Control Module is the Master Engine.
3 Lock the settings of all of the VOLTAGE TRIM potentiometers (refer to Figure 2-2) in position by
turning the locking rings on the VOLTAGE TRIM potentiometers clockwise.
To disconnect a generator from the AC Bus, perform the steps in Table 2-7.
STEP PROCEDURE
1 Move the ENGINE CONTROL switch (refer to Figure 2-2) of the engine/generator which is going to be
disconnected to the LOW IDLE or HIGH IDLE position. Verify that the LOAD COMMAND LED (refer
to Figure 2-2) of that engine/generator has extinguished. Verify the circuit breaker connecting that
engine/generator to the AC bus has tripped. The selected engine/generator will start to slow down.
2 Allow the engine a cooling-off period before stopping the engine. The engine will cool faster if the
LOW IDLE position of the ENGINE CONTROL has been selected. Once the engine has cooled
sufficiently, move the ENGINE CONTROL switch (refer to Figure 2-2) of the engine/generator which
has been disconnected from the AC Bus to the OFF position. This will stop the selected
engine/generator.
