Math101 - Mathematics For Engineers: Plane and Spherical Trigonometry Solid Mensuration

The document discusses partial fractions, which is a method for decomposing rational expressions into sums of simpler fractional components. It provides 4 examples of decomposing rational expressions into partial fractions based on the following cases: 1) Linear factors that are not repeated 2) Repeated linear factors 3) Quadratic factors that are not repeated 4) Repeated quadratic factors

PARTIAL FRACTIONS Example 2
𝟕𝒙+𝟗
A function R(x) is said to be rational function of x if and only if there exist
polynomials f(x) and g(x) such that R(x) = f(x) / g(x). The function f(x) / g(x) 𝟑𝒙𝟐 −𝟖𝒙−𝟑
sometimes is called a rational fraction.

A proper fraction is a rational fraction where the degree of the numerator is less
than the degree of denominator.

An improper fraction is one where the degree of the numerator is greater than
equal to the degree of denominator.

Case I: Linear Factors not repeated

Example 1
𝟕𝒙𝟐−𝟐𝟑𝒙+𝟏𝟎
(𝟑𝒙−𝟏)(𝒙−𝟏)(𝒙+𝟐)

Example 3

𝒙𝟑 +𝟑𝒙𝟐+𝟔𝒙+𝟕
𝒙𝟐 +𝟑𝒙+𝟐
Case II: repeated linear factors 𝟒𝒙𝟑 + 𝟏𝟔𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓𝒙 + 𝟑
(𝒙 − 𝟏)𝟐 (𝒙 + 𝟐)𝟐
𝟑𝒙 − 𝟒
(𝒙 − 𝟐)𝟐

𝟑𝒙𝟐 + 𝟏𝟔𝒙 + 𝟐𝟎
(𝒙 + 𝟑)𝟑
Case III: Quadratic factors, not repeated Case IV: repeated quadratic factors

𝟑𝒙𝟐 − 𝒙 + 𝟏
𝒙 + 𝟏 (𝒙𝟐 −𝒙 + 𝟑) 𝒙𝟒 + 𝒙𝟑 +𝟐𝒙𝟐 −𝟕
𝒙 + 𝟐 (𝒙𝟐 +𝒙 + 𝟏)𝟐
