DRRR - Q2 - Week 2

This document provides a weekly learning activity sheet on geological maps for Grade 11 students. It contains two activities for students: [1] interpreting geological hazard maps by identifying areas of high, moderate, and low susceptibility to landslides and determining appropriate actions; and [2] identifying specific areas susceptible to geohazards on a map, determining the causes of susceptibility, and proposing mitigation actions. The purpose is for students to understand geological maps and how to apply mitigation strategies to prevent loss of life and property from geohazards.

WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction & Grade 11, Quarter 2, Week 2

GEOLOGICAL MAPS

Name: ____________________________________________ Section: _____________________________

MELCS:

1. interpret geological maps (DRR11/12 IIa-b-30); and

2. apply mitigation strategies to prevent loss of lives and property. (DRR11/12 IIa-b-31)

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a. Explain the geological map; and
b. practice mitigation strategies to prevent loss of lives; and
c.appreciate the importance of geohazard map and mitigation strategies.
Key Concepts
Geological Map
- represents different geological features of a certain area. It will help the community to
determine specific areas which are prone to geologic hazards such as flooding, landslide
and liquefaction

- indicates areas that are susceptible to floods and landslides, as determined by the Mines
and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)

- serves as a guide by the Local Government Units (LGU’s) on how they should plan their
municipalities for disaster readiness

- should be considered specially when constructing housing settlements and other

infrastructures to lessen the impacts of impending hazards

- also increases the awareness and capacities of communities in their disaster preparedness
and management activities, thereby reducing the loss of lives and properties.

Mitigation

Mitigation (prevention) is the effort to reduce loss of life

and property by lessening the impact of disasters. This is
achieved through risk analysis, which results in information
that provides a foundation for mitigation activities that reduce
risk, and flood insurance that protects financial investment.

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires all local,

country, tribal and state governments to develop a multi-
hazard mitigation plan for their respective jurisdiction in order
to be eligible to receive certain hazard mitigation and public
assistance funds to reduce long-term risk to life and property.

The purpose of mitigation planning is to identify policies

and actions that can be implemented over the long term to Figure 1. Mitigation Strategy
reduce risk and future losses. Mitigation plans form the
foundation for a community’s long-term strategy to reduce disaster losses and break the cycle
of disaster damage, reconstruction, and repeated damage. The planning process creates a
framework for risk based decision making to reduce damages to lives, property, and the
economy from future disasters.

Unlike many hazards like earthquakes and typhoons which are regional in scale, landslides
and floods are generally localized and site specific in scale. As such, much of the responsibility for
mitigating and preparing for landslides and floods falls on the affected communities. The success
with which a community is able to protect itself against the risk of a landslide hazard is largely
dependent on the resources and capacities of the community. Based on the previews’ lessons,
capacity is defined as the combination of all the strengths, attributes and resources available
within a community, society or organization that can be used to achieve agreed goals.

What you need: paper and ball point pen

What to do:
A. Using the same geohazard map provided in the first activity, identify areas that are
susceptible to landslide.
B. Determine the cause why these areas are susceptible to geohazard and identify the
prevention/ adaptation/preparedness components to be initiated to mitigate these
events.
